Operative Words = Yellow
Operative Phrases = _____

Would you – care for a – mint? Peppermint? Life Saver? My pocket’s a

regular drugstore – wherever I go… // Laura, you know, if I had a sister
like you, I’d do the same thing as Tom. I’d bring out fellows and –
introduce her to them. The right type of boys – of a type to – appreciate
her. Only – well – he made a mistake about me. Maybe I’ve got no call
to be saying this. This may not have been the idea in having me over.
But what if it was? There’s nothing wrong about that. The only trouble
is that in my case – I’m not in a situation to – do the right thing. I can’t
take down your number and say I’ll phone. I can’t call up next week and
– ask for a date. I thought I had better explain the situation in case you –
misunderstood it and – I hurt your feelings… // I’ve – got strings on me.
Laura, I’ve - been going steady! I go out all the time with a girl named
Betty. She’s a home-girl like you, and Catholic, and Irish, and in a great
many ways we – get along fine. I met her last summer on a moonlight
boat trip up the river to Alton, on the Majestic. Well – right away from
the start it was – love! Being in love has made a new man of me! The
power of love is really pretty tremendous! Love is something that –
changes the whole world, Laura! // It happened that Betty’s aunt took
sick, she got a wire and had to go to Centralia. So Tom – when he asked
me to dinner – I naturally just accepted the invitation, now knowing that
you – that he – that I – Huh – I’m a stumblejohn! I wish that you would
– say something.

The Analysis:

Political Perspective- the only political perspective that is seen throughout the play is the effects
of The Great Depression on the family, especially Tom and his job

Issue of Society- Tom is scrutinized for sneaking out and lying about his whereabouts nightly,
since being homosexual and going out to homosexual meetings was frowned upon at the time.
Laura suffers from social anxiety, a comment on mental illness.

Overall Theme- the past informs the present, one cannot escape the past nor live in a fantasized
future

Characterization- Jim is the all-star athlete of his time. He is genuine through his nature of
support. He speaks positively and with support, like a salesmen or self help guide. He is not the
brightest bulb, but has good intentions.

Jim is talking to Laura.

Jim had just kissed Laura, unintentionally, and tries to explain that this was an accident, he is
already with another girl and was only trying to boost Laura’s confidence (inferiority complex).
Environment: 1937, St. Louis, Wingfield apartment, living room, candlelit (power outage).

Time Period: The play was written during the Great Depression. This greatly impacts the
Wingfield family, especially Tom.

Want: Jim wants to help Laura and to rationalize his actions.
