Meaning and History by Ocampo Ambeth

A. What are Ocampo Ambeth’s arguments?

1. “History is making people see their past, thereby giving them a sense of being Filipinos.”
2. “Kasaysayan is not a narrative or salaysay –it must have a saysay or meaning” The term
Kasaysayan is preferable than the Spanish word for history, as it is not just a mere story, but
more with saysay.
3. “If memory gives us our individual identities, then history will contribute to a national memory
and eventually that elusive thing we call national identity”

B. Do you agree with the author?

1. Ocampo implied how a Filipino’s history is fruit of sense of being. It is true and I agree because
our history is a reflection of today’s Filipino’s society, people, and mindset. Without our history
there is nothing to base our beings as Filipinos that we are today.
2. Kasaysayan is just not istorya for it must have significant value or meaning. True and I agree,
without any decisive context it’s just another ephemeral and futile recorded document.
3. As a Filipino individual I am part of Filipino history. It’s true that each individual will accord the
National identity as it’s the people’s nation that creates this as a whole.

Imagination In History by Teodoro A. Agoncillo

A. What are Agoncillo’s Arguments?

1. “..Each generation writes its own history and contributes its own interpretations…”
2. “Imagination is as important and necessary in the writing of history as it is in the writing of
fiction, drama, or poetry.” Agoncillo said.
3. According to Agoncillo “…Must exert serious efforts to understand the mind and character of
the person he is to write about…”
B. Do you agree with the author?
1. Each generation rewrites history is true, history is never a closed book and for each epoch a
survivor will continuously remold history corresponding to their perspective/opinion. I agree that
each generation will contribute an interpretation of history because it makes us open our point of
view wider.
2. Imagination is necessary to history is true and I agree because it showcases the fleeting memory
of history in the most accurate way as possible which I believe is significant to the readers to
hold interest to.
3. Historians are people with different personalities thus concluding history books different
conclusions, I acknowledge this since each historian might have diverse way of effort to portray
a certain character/person, atmosphere, or event in order to capture the attention of readers.
