On the Ending of the Bible Blitz

It seems like I have spent most of my life telling people
to read the Bible. Most people don’t, and I do
understand why. The truth is the Bible is cumbersome,
difficult, confusing, boring, and hard to read. Unlike a
novel, the plot doesn’t progress evenly from beginning
to end. It is hard to know how to even begin an effort to
read the Bible.

Pastor’s Page
A few days ago the Washington Nationals (that’s the right name, isn’t it? They’re not the Senators anymore, right?)
won the World Series. I saw the celebration on the field at the end of the game. I heard everybody on TV talking
about how big of a deal it was, acting like, “Finally! We solved the problem of world hunger!” People whom I didn’t
know ever paid any attention to baseball seemed really quite pleased with the development. Personally, it affected me
almost not at all. For whatever reason, I simply did not grow into someone with a great interest in team sports – at
least teams I wasn’t playing on. A long time ago I did become a fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes football team. Over
the years I followed them to greater or lesser degrees, and many times wondered why I bothered with them. But the
football Buckeyes have been the only team, on any level, that I have cared about, and then, frankly, not all that
much. I have seen people who were true fans of some team or another, real “fanatics,” whose emotional lives were
tied to the success of their team, and I could not identify with them, could not really understand their passion for
something where the outcomes were totally out of their control.

Even though I can’t identify with the fanaticism, I do understand. I think it is really quite simple. We want our team
to win. We tie our personal identities with the identities of the team and if they lose we feel personally diminished. We
want our team to win because when they win we win.

We want, we need, our team to win. That want, that need, extends beyond sports to any grouping with which we
identify. It extends to politics, to clubs, to churches, to any point of identity we have. We want our team to win.

Most of the time this is all fairly innocent and doesn’t cause any serious problem – except for times such as when a
team loses and a fan commits suicide or something. (It happens! I looked it up.) Most of the time it is simply fun to
follow a team, and our commitment to a cause or an organization making a positive impact in the world has to be a
good thing. There are times, though, when our commitment to something can cloud our judgment and end up
harming us and situations beyond ourselves.

Even though I do my best to avoid overtly political matters, I think I need to address something, while remaining
non-partisan. Everyone knows that our country is terribly divided, perhaps in ways not seen since the days leading up
to the Civil War. On virtually all issues, including the impeachment of the President, the lines are drawn almost
perfectly along the lines of the political parties. There is almost no spill-over from one side to the other, regardless of
the issue. That seems to be impossibility, if people were dealing with the issues on objective, rational levels. People
have ideas, thoughts, opinions, and for everybody on either side of the political divide to agree with each other 100%
seems illogical. Such a situation can only exist because we want our team to win.

While most times wanting our team to win might not matter too much, we Americans are right now faced with the
most significant issue of our lifetimes. We are, literally, right now, defining what kind of nation we are going to be
going forward, and it appears we might be radically different from what we have been in the past. These are not
normal times and how things develop will have powerful impact on the future of our country, and therefore the world.
I do not mean to be speaking for one side or the other. What I am saying is that things seem to be too important for
us to be guided by simply wanting our team to win. We need to objectively and prayerfully approach this matter. So
much depends on it. We must consider the future, and then be very determined to build the future we want for
ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren. This time, if never before, it matters.

It’s perfectly fine for us to cheer for our teams and support the causes important to us. We must be careful, though,
not to let our personal identities be consumed by the identity of the team. That can be nothing less than profoundly
dangerous.

Preschool News
October is one of our favorite and busiest months of the year. We learn about the
change of seasons from summer to Fall, Harvest, Fire Safety, Pumpkins, Nocturnal
Animals, and Halloween.

During Fire Safety week we transformed the play area into a Fire Station. The kids were
able to dress up like fire fighters, "respond to calls", and "put out fires". We had a
special visit from the Port Clinton Fire Department on October 9th. The kids we able to
sit inside a fire truck and ambulance and check out some of the equipment they use on
emergency calls.

Pumpkin week is always a crowd pleaser! Not only do we set up our own pumpkin patch
and Farmer's Market, but we also visit a real Pumpkin Patch. Not only is it a fun
experience for the kids to go on a field trip, but also a great opportunity for parents to
meet and get to know each other. Through pumpkin week, the kids learned about the
parts of a pumpkin as well as the life cycle. Each year we toss our old pumpkins out
into our garden so we can watch them grow over the summer.

We spent week learning about Nocturnal Animals. We read books, made projects and sorted nocturnal and diurnal
animals. They were surprised by some of the animals that are active during the night.

Halloween week is always a fun and busy week. During Halloween week, we put out costumes in the play area, and
Halloween themed activities throughout the classroom centers. We celebrated Halloween with a costume party. We
ate yummy food, went trick-or-treating and played Halloween games. We ended the week with a Pajama and Movie
Day!

We hosted a Wedding Shower and celebrated Ms. Kelly. Thank you to all of the students and parents for helping make
her day special.
