SPILLWAY

INTRODUCTION
When the water in the reservoir increases, the large
accumulation of water endangers the stability of the dam
hence structure is provided in the body of a dam or near the
dam or periphery of the reservoir. This structure is called as
spillway.
Spillways release floods so that the water does not
overtop and damage or even destroy the dam. Except during
flood periods, water does not normally flow over a
spillway. In contrast, an intake is a structure used to release
water on a regular basis for water supply, hydroelectricity
generation, etc.

LOCATION OF SPILLWAYS
 Spillways may be provided within the body of dam.

 Spillways may sometimes be provided at one side or both

side of the dam.

 Sometimes by-pass spillway is provided which is

completely separate from the dam
 Spillway is located at the top of the reservoir. Dam may
also have bottom outlets with valves or gates which may be
operated to release the flood water.

MAIN TYPES OF SPILLWAYS

 CONTROLLED SPILLWAYS

A controlled spillway has mechanical structures or gates to

regulate the rate of flow. This design allows nearly the full
height of the dam to be used for water storage year-round,
and flood waters can be released as required by opening
one or more gates.
 UNCONTROLLED SPILLWAYS
An uncontrolled spillway, in contrast, does not have gates;
when the water rises above the lip or crest of the spillway it
begins to be released from the reservoir. The rate of
discharge is controlled only by the depth of water above the
reservoir's spillway. Storage volume in the reservoir above
the spillway crest can only be used for the temporary
storage of floodwater; it cannot be used as water supply
storage because it is normally empty.

CHUTE SPILLWAY

It is also known as Trough Spillway. The function of Chute

Spillway is to prevent damage to the valley walls that could
endanger the dams. It consists of steeply sloping open channel
which is made up of reinforced concrete slab. The Spillway is
sometimes of constant width, but is usually narrowed for
economy and then widened near the end to reduce the
discharging velocity.
A chute spillway is a common and basic design which transfers
excess water from behind the dam down a smooth decline into
the river below. These are usually designed following an ogee
curve. Most often, they are lined on the bottom and sides with
concrete to protect the dam and topography.

BELL MOUTH SPILLWAY

A bell-mouth spillway is designed like an inverted bell where

water can enter around the entire perimeter. These uncontrolled
spillways are also called morning glory, (after the flower)
or glory hole spillways. In areas where the surface of the
reservoir may freeze, this type of spillway is normally fitted
with ice-breaking arrangements to prevent the spillway from
becoming ice-bound.

In some cases bell-mouth spillways are gate

controlled. The spillway at Hungry Horse Dam, the
highest morning glory structure in the world is
controlled by a 64-by-12-foot (19.5 by 3.7 m) ring
gate. One of the most well-known of these spillways is
the one in Covão dos Conchos reservoir lake, in

Portugal, which is constructed to look like a natural

formation; a video of this went viral on the Internet in
early 2016. The largest bell-mouth spillway remains
in Geehi Dam, measuring 105 ft (32 m) in diameter at
the lake's surface.

CASE STUDY
Spillway of Tehari dam
The Tehri Dam is the tallest dam in India and one of the tallest
in the world. It is a multi-purpose rock and earth-
fill embankment dam on the Bhagirathi
River near Tehri in Uttarakhand.
Spillway of Tehari dam is chute gate controlled spillway and the
capacity of spillway is 15,540 m3/s.

Spillway of Monticello dam

Monticello Dam is a concrete arch dam in Napa County,
California, United States.
The dam is noted for its classic, uncontrolled morning-glory
type spillway. The diameter at the lip is 72 ft (22 m). Locally,
the spillway is also known as 'The Glory Hole'.

Water spills over its lip when the lake reaches 1,602,000 acre
feet (1.976×109 m3) and a reservoir elevation of 440 feet
(130 m) above sea level. The last time the reservoir spilled
through the glory hole was on the morning of May 18, 2006.
Current lake level status is available at Solano County Water
Agency.

Swimming near the Glory Hole is prohibited. The exit of the

spillway is well known in the skateboarding world as a full-pipe.

the Glory Hole and getting sucked down the pipe.

CONCLUSION
 A spillway is a structure used to provide the controlled
release of flows from a dam or levee into a downstream
area.

 Spillways release floods so that the water does not overtop

and damage or even destroy the dam.

 Spillways are an important functional part of a

hydroelectric facility.
