LESSON 1: Types of Curriculum Design

This activity will present the different curriculum designs identified by several practitioners
and scholars in curriculum studies. The different designs provided an insight on how subjects
and disciplines are organised into learning areas.

I. MY LEARNING:
Curriculum design refers to the arrangement of the elements of a curriculum. There four
elements are aims, goals and objectives; subject matter or content, learning experiences and
evaluation. Posner (1997) provided an enlightenment idea on how to differentiate related terms in
curriculum as he classified the activity of arranging curriculum elements or contents into to macro
and micro level of organising curriculum contents.
The macro level deals with arranging or organising the total curriculum from the philosophy
down to the content of different subjects. While, the micro level is organising the content based on
specific subject or discipline. The curriculum design provides a philosophical way of organising the
contents and elements of the curriculum in various manner.

ACTIVITY 1. CURRICULUM DESIGNS AND MODELS. Print (1988) classified the different
curriculum designs into 4 groups. With your group, describe the four curriculum Designs
and Provide Examples.

MY REFLECTION:
1. Identify other subject or disciplines that are examples of subject-centred design?

2.Identify other subject or disciplines that are examples of different integrated curriculum
design

3. Can you give possible benefits and its pitfalls of both the subject design and integrated?

MY REFLECTION:
1. Examine the K to 12 Curriculum. Select a grade level that you wish to analyze. Identify the
core standards and competencies that are required for all students to know and do?

2. Analyze the national curriculum standards in basic education of other countries like
Australia, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany and Singapore having their national core
curriculum that is implemented in their educational system?

ACTIVITY 8 CURRICULUM DESIGNS. Using the knowledge gained in the lessons and
activities. Work with your group and do the following.
A. BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM Get hold of the Education Curriculum (BEC)
Curriculum. Borrow this from any teacher in the public school. Study the curriculum
and answer the questions that follow. Each group is assigned in a particular subject
and grade level. For Group 1 use the Grade 1 curriculum specific for Filipino, Group
2- Grade 2 HEKASI, Group 3- Grade 3- Pagpapahalaga . Group 4-Grade 4 MAPEH ,
Group 5-Grade 5 Mathematics and Group 6-Grade 6 Science.

a. Do you find any curriculum elements existing in the BEC. Identify two (2)
samples of each element. Include this in you’re my PORTFOLIO section.
b. In the BEC itself, you may find several curriculum designs which were
presented before. Identify at least (3) designs and elaborate.

II. MY REFLECTION: With your group pause for a while and reflect on what you have been
through in your activity. This portion will requires you to have deep thinking. Answer
each question by yourself first, then share it with your group. Listen to their ideas and
make a position paper for each situations.

IF THERE IS A NEED TO MODIFY SOMETHING IN THE CURRICULUM, IN WHAT ASPECTS ARE

LESSON 2: SEQUENCING
This activity will present the different curriculum designs identified by several practitioners
and scholars in curriculum studies. The different designs provided an insight on how subjects
and disciplines are organised into learning areas.

I. My LEARNING. There are two major forces considered in designing a curriculum it

is called horizontal and vertical organisations. Tomlinsons et.al. (2002) identified
theses important features for a good curriculum design

Horizontal organization Vertical organization

ACTIVITY1. Distinguish a horizontal organization from a vertical organization

ACTIVITY 2. Sequencing of Curriculum Content. This section is essential in curriculum design.
Print (1993) underscored that contents are sequenced based on the nature of the subjects
and disciplines they belong. They are organised according to a specific curriculum design
principle or philosophy. Discuss from the following terms how it interplays in designing a
curriculum. In the sample column provide a sample drawing that projects the type of
curriculum sequence.

ACTIVITY 9: CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT IN THE PHILIPPINES: With your group, justify

why we need to view the curriculum designs in the following dimensions.

Curriculum Dimension Importance to the curriculum design

1. Scope

2. Sequence

3. Continuity

4. Integration

5. Articulation

6. Balance

ACTIVITY 10. LESSON PLAN. Borrow a lesson plan of an experienced teacher. Study very
closely and find out what curriculum design is used. Explain why you consider it to be
using that design.

II. MY REFLECTION: With your group pause for a while and reflect on what you have been
through in your activity. This portion will requires you to have deep thinking. Answer
each question by yourself first, then share it with your group. Listen to their ideas and
make a position paper for each situations.

What is the impact of the curriculum design in teaching and learning?
