Man Machine System

Engineering Psychologist must do the ff.

1. Determine the information needs of the machine operator.
2. Formulate the best allocation of function between man and machine.
3. Determine the safest way of communicating information to the machine operator.

Two varieties of man- machine systems

EALLOCATION OF FUNCTIONS IN MAN-MACHINE SYSTEMS

Man is superior to machines in the performance of the following tasks:
1. Detecting through the senses a wide range of stimuli
2. Picking infrequently appearing low-level stimuli against a confusing background
3. Sensing, detecting, and recognizing highly unusual or unexpected stimuli in the
environment.
4. Being able to use a wide range of past experience in making decision
5. Being able to respond and adapt quickly to diverse situations and emergencies.
6. Drawing generalization on the basis of a number of specific observations
7. Exhibiting flexibility in problem solving, including the development of ne solutions
never before applied to a problem.

Man however, is inferior to machines in performing the following tasks:

1. Detection of sensory stimuli
2. Long-term monitoring activities
3. Rapidly carrying out mathematical calculations
4. Retrieving large amounts of data reliably and quickly.
5. Applying force, particularly where precision and continuous application are
necessary
6. Routine repetitive performance over long periods of time.
Weaknesses and limitations of the machines:
1.Machines are not very flexible.
2. Machines cannot benefit from past experience or mistakes.
3. Machines are unable to reason or examine various unprogrammed alternatives;
machines cannot improvise
Consideration in the allocation of functions are:
1.Cost consideration: Though they can do move machines also cost more.

2. Social and political considerations; Even though machines are more efficient, there
are times when a company has to utilize men instead because of the social situation
that they are functioning in.
