I. The Accomplishments of Modern Day Women

a. How do you think that a girl’s life today is different from her mother’s life or her
grandmother’s life? Why do you think things are different for girls today?
Every individual’s experience in life is never the same. A girl born in the millennium will
certainly have an incomparable experience with baby boomers, and vice versa. Sadly,
some make the mistake of comparing their own life events to another, as if it’s them who
lived the life of another. As time passes by and changes to a new day, it also brings
change in the society, the environment, and the people. In today’s time, girls are able to
freely do more things than the girls before them. This is a manifestation of the changes
brought about by the advancement of not only technology, but also ideologies, which
empowers women to fight for their rights.
b. Describe some of the specific accomplishments of the feminist movement over the past
thirty years. (Give at least 3, about what? Year decreed?)
1. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 1965 paved the way for women
to gain access to jobs in the U.S.,
2. In 1972, the U.S. congress passed Title IX of the higher education act, prohibited
discrimination on the basis of sex in any educational program receiving federal funds
and thereby forced all-male schools to open their doors to women and athletic
programs to sponsor and finance female sports teams.
3. The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in 1972 states that invalidate many state and
federal laws that discriminate against women; its central underlying principle was
that sex should not determine the legal rights of men or women.

II. Organizing for Women’s Rights

a. What were the most effective arguments the women’s rights advocates used?
b. Why did the legislators agree to support or decide to oppose the legislators?
c. That further steps can the women’s rights advocates take to win the legislator’s
support?

III. The Continuing Struggle for Women’s Rights

a. Identify three inequalities between women and men and boys and girls in which
women still need to achieve equality with men.
1. Women are 47% more likely to suffer severe injuries in car crashes because safety
features are designed for men.
2. 2. 33,000 girls become child brides every day
3. Women in rural parts of Africa spend 40 billion hours a year collecting water

b. What do you think are the obstacles to women’s equality?

One of the obstacles to women’s equality is the conservative and patriarchal mindset of
the older generation.

c. Give three examples of discrimination against women or of sexism that you have
experienced or observed.
1. Women are still expected to stay at home and be a housewife.
2. Girls are being catcalled, even if their clothing is not provocative.
3.
