PART A — (10 × 1 = 10 marks)

Answer ALL questions.

1. Given  

2. Show that Z(G) is a sub group.
3. Construct a 2-sylow sub group in S4.
4. Define a p-sylow sub group of a group G.
5. Describe the internal direct product.

6. Write a note on the invariants of a group G.

7. Define a Euclidean ring.

8. Define a maximal ideal and a prime ideal.

9. State Gauss lemma.

10. Show that an integer monic polynomial is


primitive.

PART B — (5 × 5 = 25 marks)
Answer ALL questions, choosing either (a) or (b).
11. (a) Determine which of the following are even
permutations
(i) (1,2,3) (1,2)
(ii) (1,2) (1,3) (1,4) (2,5)
Or

(b) If 0(G )  p 2 where is p is a prime number


then prove that G is abelian.
12. (a) If A, B are finite sub groups of G the prove
0 ( A ) 0( B )
that 0( A  B ) 

(b) Prove that any group order 72 must have a
non trivial normal sub group.

13. (a) Suppose that G is the internal direct product


of N1 , N n . Prove that for i  j ,

Or
(b) Prove that if G and G ' are isomorphic
abelian groups, then for every integers G( s)
and G ' ( s) are isomorphic.

14. (a) Let R be a Euclidean ring and a, b  R .


Prove that if b  0 is not a unit in R then
d( a )  d( ab) .
Or
(b) In a Euclidean ring prove that any two
greatest common divisors of a and b are
associates.

15. (a) If f ( x ), g ( x ) are two non-zero elements of


F ( x ) then prove that
deg f ( x ), g ( x )  deg f ( x )  deg g ( x )
Or
(b) State and prove the division algorithm.

PART C — (5 × 8 = 40 marks)
Answer ALL questions, choosing either (a) or (b)

16. (a) State and prove Cayley’s theorem.

(b) Derive the class equation of a finite group G.

17. (a) State and prove Sylow’s theorem.

(b) If G is a finite group, p is a prime and

two subgroups of G of order pn are
conjugate.

18. (a) Show that any finite abelian group is the


direct product of a cyclic groups.

Or
(b) Prove that two abelian groups of order p n
are isomorphic if and only if they have the
same invariants.

19. (a) State and prove the unique factorization


theorem.

Or
(b) Prove that J i  is an Euclidean ring.

20. (a) State and prove the Gauss lemma.

Or
(b) Prove that if R is a unique factorization
domain, then so is R[ x ] .
