C3 C4

Stunted Growth - low rate of photosynthesis since Dark green leaves - PS rate maintained due to
low concentration of CO2 spatial separation of bundle sheath and mesophyll
cells

Yellowing - senescence of leaves due to low PS rate Adaptation - Kranz anatomy CO2
Study Questions
Will the O2 concentration in the set-up increase or decrease? What
effect would there be on C3 plants for such change in O2 level?

Oxygen concentration increases since it is trapped inside

the bell jar upon being formed in PS. This made
photorespiration favorable in C3 plants.
Define CO2 compensation point and light compensation point.

● Light compensation point - light intensity at which

there is no net oxygen input or output.
● Carbon dioxide compensation point - point at which
net assimilation of carbon dioxide is equal to zero
With the decline in CO2 concentration in the set-up, which
species would still exhibit net photosynthesis after one week?
● C4 plants maintained its net PS rate due to the Kranz
anatomy of its mesophyll and bundle sheath cells
● Spatial separation was present wherein site for CO2 fixation
was isolated
● PEP carboxylase was also utilized - lessen the occurrence
of photorespiration
