CLASSROOM NEWSLETTER OF MS. CHOI'S GEOMETRY CLASS

GeoGebra:
EASY AND INTERACTIVE GRAPHING

Geogebra is an interactive, mathematic application that will allow

students to construct various geometric figures with precision and

accuracy. The Geogebra software has already been pre-installed

into each students' Chromebook, but there is also a GeoGebra

website (geogebra.org/graphing) for use on other devices.

Students will be using GeoGebra during class to help them

visualize the figures and concepts we will be learning about. We

begin next week with a discussion on triangles. Students will use LESSONS USING GEOGEBRA
GeoGebra to help them draw different types of triangles and GeoGebra will be used to support student
measure their angles and lengths. We will then move on to learning throughout the semester. Some

MathXL:
PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
MathXL is an online tutorial and assessment system from the
educational publishing company, Pearson. A student access
code will be given to each student so that they can enroll
themselves in this geometry course for free. This system will
walk students through solving math problems that cover
topics from points and lines all the way to 3D volume and
trigonometric relations. MathXL will also create a personalized
study plan for students with recommendations of practice
problems and concepts that should be revisited. I will be
assigning homework problems and posting additional helpful
exercises and challenges on MathXL. This will ensure that
students will have scaffolded support whenever they need it,
even when I am not around to explain what to do. MathXL
makes available a variety of multimedia resources to help
meet the needs of diverse learners. This software will give
students the tools and practice they need to reach proficiency.

One of the features of MathXL that will be
particularly useful is called "Skill-Builder." Based on
a student's performance, Skill-Builder will adapt to
a student's needs to provide the appropriate
exercises and practice problems to build
confidence and mastery of key learning objectives.
A large portion of this class will be devoted to
using the geometric postulates and axioms we will
be learning about to create careful proofs. As many
students tend to find writing proofs to be one of
the more challenging things we do this year,
MathXL will be a helpful tool in providing guided
solutions, additional example problems, and quick
and easy access to the textbook to help them
review what it is they should be doing. These
programs will offer students a new way to interact
and engage with the material to hopefully make
geometry more interesting.
