Lesson Plan in Earth Science Grade 11

JULY 24, 2019

Content Standards:
Demonstrate an understanding of the how the planet Earth evolved in the last 4.6 billion
years (including the age of the Earth, major geologic time subdivisions, and marker fossils).
Learning Competency and Code:
The learners shall be able to describe how marker fossils (also known as guide fossils)
are used to define and identify subdivisions of the geologic time scale (S11/12ES-Ie-28)
I. Objectives:
At the end of 60 minutes, 80% of the learners are expected to:
1. Acquire familiarity with the Geologic Time Scale,
2. Describe how fossils are used to identify subdivision of the geological time scale,
3. Explain how fossils have been used to define and identify subdivisions of the geologic
time scale.

II. Content:
Subject Matter: Geological Time Scale
Integration:
(Learning Area): MAPEH, English
Strategies: Game (cabbage activity), Cooperative Learning, Inquiry Based Learning
Materials: bond paper, DLP, Laptop, Manila Paper

III. Learning Tasks:
ELICIT (Access prior knowledge ) 7 Minutes Materials
To elicit prior knowledge, the students will have a review using a Flash cards
flash card. They are ask to describe/say something about the word.
Words:
Geological Time Scale Time
Fossils History
Era Rock
Cenozoic Pre-Cambrian
Arthur Holmes Periods
Note: Teacher can also use other words for the lesson.
ENGAGE (Get the students’ minds focused on the topic)
5 Minutes
The teacher will ask the students to answer the following question: LCD/Laptop showing the
1. What are the major divisions of the geological time scale? evidences in each
2. What are the significant event during Pre-Cambrian Era, geological time scale
Paleozoic Era, Mesozoic Era, and Cenozoic Era?

EXPLORE (Provide students with a common experience)

15 Minutes
Activity:
Stratigraphy and Evolution: Using Fossils to Tell "Deep Time”
(Olson, H.C. 2011. Stratigraphy and Evolution: Using Fossils to Tell Cards of Fossil
“Deep Time,” TXESS Revolution Assemblages
http://www.txessrevolution.org/FaunalSuccession Accessed
01/05/16)

Procedure: Example:
1. Divide class into groups.
2. Provide each group set of cards/print-outs representing
fossil assemblages from different
 rock layers.
3. Explain to the students that the actual size of the fossils
represented in the illustrations is
 much smaller.
Foraminifera are mostly marine microscopic, single celled
organisms that have calcareous shells. When the organism
dies, the shells or tests become part of the sediment record.
Foraminifers are important index fossils — abundant,
widespread, distinctive, and have relatively limited geologic
time range.
4. Ask each group to arrange the cards in order from oldest
to youngest.
5. Ask the students to do research on the index fossils of the
Philippines. Name at least one index fossil, Indicate what
division of the Geologic Time Scale the index fossil
represents and where the index fossil have been reported.

Rubrics:

EXPLAIN (Teach the concept. Should include interaction between

teacher and students). 15 Minutes
The learners will discuss the lessons interactively with the
using the guide questions:
1. What is the essential role of fossils in subdividing the
Geologic Time?
2. What is the sub-discipline of stratigraphy which deals with
the use of fossils in correlation and establishing the relative
ages of rocks?
3. What is index fossil?
4. How did the scientist assigned numerical dates in the
geological time scale?
ELABORATE (Students apply the information learned in the Explain.
The teacher will give inputs to deepen the understanding of the
students) 15 minutes
Students will be given reading material on the index fossils of
the Philippines. Teacher Made Powerpoint
Using a powerpoint, the teacher will discuss: Presentation
1. Index fossil,
2. Division of the Geologic Time Scale the index fossil
represents For reading materials
