THE PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND

BACK GROUND OF THE STUDY

Most people are not born public speakers; they are trained to become one. When they

find themselves in situations where they become the focus of attention as they have to

address an audience, they experience emotions like fear and anxiety. Most of them try to

avoid situations where they have to perform or speak in public, but when unavoidable,

such situations are endured by distress. According to Lucas (2011), “Many people who

converse easily in all kinds of everyday situations become frightened at the idea of

standing up before a group to make a speech” Such people need to realize that they are

not the only ones who may be going through these emotions; in fact, almost every speaker

feels the same. It is important that people consciously realize the fact that there are more

nervous speakers in the world than those who are not. . People can overcome this

problem by practicing in small groups of peers and then moving on to larger audiences.

Many people are shy or afraid of speaking in front of their peers or familiar people and this

can be overcome by practicing in front of unfamiliar audiences. This will increase their

confidence and help them reduce their anxiety level.

Anxiety is defined as a state of uneasiness and apprehension of fear. anxiety disorders

are among the most common mental disorders encountered by public speakers. People

who feel anxiety while speaking in public generally tend to avoid situations where they

have to perform, but when they encounter such situations, they suffer intense distress and

anxiety According to Kant (2000), people in general negatively assess and appraise those

who demonstrate their fears towards public speaking and fail to make a strong impression

through confident gestures. These problems can act as hurdles in achieving ones goals

that could be both personal and professional; hence speakers need to develop strong

public speaking skills to enable them to become more confident

The purpose of this study is to identify and investigate the causes behind the level of

public speaking anxiety on academic oral performances recommend steps that could be

adopted to overcome their anxiety level. This study presents the reasons behind the fear of

public speaking in students and problems caused by their fear. It includes the detailed

description of the results and findings of the research. Thus, the following research

questions will be looked into.

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

Management is one of the most important human activities in order to accomplish aims

and objectives (outumn,2004).to ensure that the organizational target and goals are

met, educational managers must take into account the proper management of addressing

problems encountered in school.

An outline of specific theories of anxiety to illustrate the development of anxiety. Theory is

presented in this part .it includes not only frameworks developed specially for language

learning but also models derived from psychology.

General theories of anxiety can be conceptualized using two models

:pekrun’s(1992)expancy –value theory of anxiety(EVTA) and Bandura’s(1991) theory of

self-efficacy each of these models uses different types of approprisals to explain and

predict anxietyreactions individuals.

According to these models ,concepts of worry and distractions relate to first to

appraisals os situation-outcome expectancies(appraisals of a situation as being threatining

or not) with action control expentancies (appraisals about one’s ability to initiate and carry

out an effective solution)It implies that foreseeing negative potentially harmful events in

which indivuals cannot see themselves as effective mediators often produces anxiety.

Similarly, bandura’s (1991) theory of self efficacysuggest that when a situation in

percieved as threatening, the resultant anxiety is dependent on a individuals perceptions of

his/her ability to deal positively with the threat .Bandura additionaly argues that self –

esteem can act as a mitigating factor in anxiety-producing circumtances.when learners see

situations at threatening .there can be an adverse effect on learning.because highly

anxious individuals are often in a state of dividend attention.their ability to concetrate and

be successful at learning tasks is vulnerable.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and related studies which includes the

ideas, finished studies, generalization or conclusions, methodologies and other. Those that

apprenwere included in this chapter helps in familiarizing information that are relevant and

similar to present study.

Review of Related Literature

Foreign Literature

A look at stage fright and the fears related to public speaking.

Before someone can get in front of an audience they should be prepared to face

crowd with confidence and poise.however, this will be difficult if they are afraid.one of the

most relevant topic on the issue of public speaking fear is communication apprehension

theory(CA);also know as public speaking anxiety(PSA).communication apprehension

theory (CA) is defined as the level of fear or anxiety associted with either real or

anticipated communication with another person(McCroskey,1984).Instruction in this area

of research will contribute to the communication-consulting field and give the students
PRES. DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL HIGH SCHOOL 10

/clients an understanding of CA.Discussion on CA will also allow for more conversant ways

to confront CA,and help those individuas who experience it(Feeny,2008).

Although CA has been a topic of research for a long time ,advancement in how to treat

the problem has continued to grow over the last 40 years. Another advancement was the

creation of more interpersonal communications classes at the collegiate level instead of

the traditional mandated public speaking graduation requirement (McCroskey,2009).

Further studies have revealed a correlational between CA and a set of human

predictors in an effort to understand the problem. In recent studies ,an examination of the

influenced of unwillingness to communicate ,self esteem and biological sex of

students’communication apprehension levels in public speaking classroom setting were

able to support the idea that CA can be predicted among cetain people (Bodie

,2010;Richardson,2003).

Foreign Literature

Speech organization and preparation.

In a study by Hsu(2009), she investigated the relationship among trait

anxiety,audience nonverbal feedback,attributions,and public speking state anxiety.Fifty

nine undergraduate students randomly assigned to either a positive or negative condition

of audience nonverbal feedback delivered an impromptu speech and completed a trait

anxiety measure, sate anxietyscale, and attributional questionnaire about audience

PRES. DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL HIGH SCHOOL 11

nonverval feedback increased external attributions, which ,in turn, increased state anxiety

and CA.trait anxiety was not more predictive of state anxiety than nonverbal feedback

As early as the fourth century B.C,aristotle developed the topics to help his tudents

discover what could be used to developed a speaking subject.the topics ,in greek ‘’topoi”or

in latin“loci”(words that mean “places”)are concieved as places where ideas can be help

speakers and writers invent ideas and group relevant material to develop a subject

(huang,2007,speight,2010).

There either important topics arise from the teachings of aristotle .they are logos

,pathos, and ethos.ethos is appeal based on the character of the speaker.logos is appeal

based on logic or reason.pathos is appeal based on emotion. These ideas along with

aristotle’s recognition of “topoi”(topic),lend credence to a historical look at the evolution of

public speaking (Dascal &Gross,2005,Poggi,2005).

More recently ,scholars have recognized the connection between history and rhetoric

,public speaking and democracy. Current public speaking students are taught various skills

and techniques for speaking in a variety of context ,but are not taught to see their effort as

playing a role in the maintenance of or a challenge to those contexts.students construct

speeches designed solely for the public speakingclassroom and have difficulty seeing

them as anything.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter presents the methods in the research and the decription procedure used

to form a data to know the effect of public speaking anxiety on academic oral learning

performances to the selected students of president diosdado macapagal high school.

Research Design

This study is about the affect of public speaking anxiety on student academic

learning oral performances in president diosdado macapagal high school.the reseacher

deemed that appropriate to use the type of descriptive quantitative research. In this design

the researcher engage a survey questionnaire to randomly selected respondent from

grade 12 students .A “survey” is the collections of data attained by individuals questions

either in person on paper ,by phone or online.

According to Calderon(2012) Descriptive method aim primarily at the

describing, recording, analyzing, and interpreting of the present nature, composition or

process of phenomena which focuses on prevailing conditions ,on how a persn ,group

behaves or functions in the present.it often involves some types of comparison or

PRES. DIOSDADO MACAPAGAL HIGH SCHOOL 13

contrast,in other words, descriptive research maybe defined as a purposive process of

gathering ,analyzing, classifying and tabulating data.about prevailing conditions ,practices

,belief, processes, trends, and cause and effect relationship and the making adequata and

accurate interprentation about such data with or without the aid of statistical methods.

THE SAMPLE

A population frame of the study is from grade 12 students from president disdado

macapagal high school.from three(3) strand which is the General academic strand(GAS)

having the total of population of 118 students ;Information and communication of

technology(ICT) with the total of 60 students and cookery with the total population of 79

students.each chance and each member of the populations has an equal chance of being

included in the sample.every possible sample of a given size has the same chance of

selection.

To determine the sample size:

n = N = SOLVINS FORMULA

1 +NE²
Was utilized .

n =sample size

N=population size

e= margin of error(0.05)

a sample random sampling is an unbiased surveying technique.the reseachers used

a sample random sampling for gathering data to all students in president diosdado

macapagal high school to ensure that every students has the characteristic on president

diosdado macapagal high school and has aequal chances of being selected in the sample

and also to promote the most suitable way from both the researchs and participants.

RESEARCH INTRUMENT

To gather information of data ,the reacher construct a questionnaires.the questionnaires

was divided into three(3) parts.the first part, it seeks to gather a data regarding the profile

of the respondent which include their age ,genderof the students .the second part,it consist

of questions that are subdivided according to their answer to determine the effect of pubic

speaking anxiety on students academic learning oral performances.and in the third

part, compromises questions that are useful to determine the affect of PSA on the

students.
