Lesson Plan #1 Title: Reviewing 4th grade math concepts

Performance Objective: Students will review 4th grade standard algorithm single digit by

multi-digit multiplication to build fluency and retention through procedural practice. Students

will complete a task strip with four single by double-digit multiplication problems and expected

to create and solve one word problem. Proficiency will be measured if they can solve every

problem on the task strip problem as well as create a real world problem and solve it.

Resources or Materials Needed:

Overhead dashcam

Smartboard

Pencil/paper

At least three different colored markers

Chromebook – mathgames.com account

Time: 90 Minutes

Step 1: Pre-Instructional Activities: Student will be say the learning target to a shoulder

partner during turn and talk. Students will try to explain what the objective is and check to see if

their partner has an understanding as well. I will begin the lesson on multiplication, prompting

them on how they can explain what it is in their terms. Students lead this discussion to build off

their ideas. I will show them on the overhead a sample problem from a 4th grade standard, multi

digit multiplication of a single digit whole number, and have students rate 1-5 with their fingers

on if they remember this from last year. I will then ask how many are confident they can solve

this problem on a 1-5 rating scale.

Step 2: Content Presentation: I will solve the single by multi digit problem first, walking my

class on the steps to use. I will show a word problem for the next problem. I will underline key

words that tell me what the word problem is asking me to do. After modeling with a single

problem and then a word problem, I will gradually release the responsibility to them.

Step 3: Learner Participation: Learner will participate in a small group environment working

on two separate single by multi digit problems. One will be a normal number problem and then

the second problem will be a word problem. Students will show participation as they work

together to solve the problem with each student having a different color to show which step they

showed. There should be at least three or four different colors shown and the same color cannot

complete two steps in a row.

Step 4: Assessment: Once the small group activity is complete students, will show their

understanding of the objective by completing a task strip of four single by multi digit problems

and space for the fifth problem so they can create their own word problem and solve it.

Step 5: Follow-Through Activities: once students complete their task strip, we will reconvene

as a class and go over the lesson targets. Students will discuss with shoulder partners their word

problems they created and compare their answers to the first four problems. If students did not

complete the initially task or have some answers incorrect, they will go back and correct the

problems on the task strip. For students who have finished they will work practice fluency by

logging onto mathgames.com and completing the fluency assignment assigned by me that

connects to the instruction target of the day.

Summary:

This lesson is used with the behaviorist learning theory idea of using previous knowledge to

build their knowledge and fluency. With no real world application yet, this pushes them to recall
the standards thought to them in 4th grade. This builds the foundation towards their next lessons

and throughout the multiplication unit.
