Kinds of sentences
A group of words placed in a specific order to make complete sense is called a
sentence. A sentence begins with a capital letter. Examples a) Raman is a fruit seller. b) Do you sell mangoes? c) Give me a dozen mangoes. d) What a strange request! There are different kinds of sentences and they are: 1) Declarative sentence 2) Interrogative sentence 3) Imperative sentence 4) Exclamatory sentence
1. A declarative sentence makes a statement. It ends
with a full stop. Examples: The child is going to school. My father is a doctor. I get up early in the morning.
2. An interrogative sentence asks a question. It ends with
a question mark. What is your name? Can you solve this problem? Do you know where my keys are?
3. An imperative sentence gives a command or makes a request.
Give me the book. Please sit with me today. Jennifer, clean up your room.
4. An exclamatory sentence shows strong feelings or emotions such as
joy, sorrow, regret, surprise, wonder etc. It has an exclamation mark. Hurray! We are going to the beach today. What a marvellous sight! You are two hours late! Q.I State whether the sentence is declarative, interrogative, imperative or exclamatory:
