General Information 1 5

1.1 Safety information

Read the following instructions as well as the most recent version of
n General Safety Notes (TD00-000.860.01.xx.xx)
n Product-Specific Safety Information (CT02-023.860.01.xx.xx)
before trouble shooting the WCS.

The following instructions and the above mentioned Safety documentation contain im‐
portant safety information as well as information about tools to be used.

Operating the WCS water pump without water (e.g. during filling/refilling the gantry)

 will destroy the pump.

=> Do not operate the water pump without water.

When opening or tightening copper pipe connections, hold the pipe with a pipe wrench.

Otherwise, the copper pipe could bend, causing leaks.
All gaskets required in the water circulation system are included with the spare parts. Al‐
ways use new gaskets when replacing these parts.

Only qualified and trained service staff is allowed to perform service activities on the sys‐
tem. Therefore, the exchange of “common” FRUs (Field Replaceable Unit), such as PCBs
(Printed Circuit Board), contactors, circuit breakers, connectors, fuses, lamps, switches
etc., is not described in this document.

Some of the common FRUs require additional information or adjusting.
Please refer to ( Shutoff Valve / Page 40) before replacement.

Avoid accident and injury or damage of parts.

Risk of accident and injury!
 Read and observe the safety information contained in the “General” section of
this document and/or “Product-specific safety notes”.

(1) Open
(2) Close

(4) Filling and draining valve

1. Switch off the WCS via breaker F14 in the PDC.

2. Connect the water hoses to the filling and draining valves ( 4/Fig. 2 Page 10).
3. Place absorbent cloth under the filling and draining valves ( 4/Fig. 2 Page 10), be‐
cause water may escape when the connection is opened.
4. Route the water hoses to a syphon or a bucket.
 The end of the hose must be lower than the fill and drainage valves, otherwise
the water will not fully drain from the cooling system.
5. Open the filling and draining valves by turning them 90 degrees counterclockwise us‐
ing the valve cap.
 The valve is open when the notch on the valve is lined up with the connection
pipe( 4/Fig. 2 Page 10).
6. The red shut-off valve for the gantry cooling system must be open.
 The lever is in line with the connection pipe ( 1/Fig. 2 Page 10).
7. The cooling system is empty when water no longer flows from the water hoses.

2.2.1.3 Additional procedures

Additional work is necessary for replacement of the gantry heat exchanger, water ho‐
ses, or if the gantry must be removed.

1. Close the red shutoff valve ( 3/Fig. 2 Page 10).

2. Connect compressed air (approx. 3.5 bar) to the filling valve ( 4/Fig. 2 Page 10).

3. Close the 3-way valve in the right stand of the gantry with an Allen key (the white
screw ( 1/Fig. 4 Page 11) must be in CCW end position (mechanical stop)).

Fig. 3: 3-way valve in gantry stand Fig. 4: Example of Adjustment drive

Close

I
Open

4. Open the 3-way valve one revolution CW.

5. Supply compressed air two minutes.
6. Open the 3-way valve CW until the mechanical stop .
7. Evacuate the water, until the cooling system is empty (approx. 20 minutes).
The water volume of the complete cooling system can be calculated by adding:
- the water volume from the water/water cooling cabin (approx. 9-10 liter) and
- the water volume from the water pipes (approx. 0.5 liter per meter)

 The water volume of the complete cooling system is approx. 30 liters (if 20 m water
pipes to and from gantry is used).

2.2.2 Filling the cooling system

Filling as well as refilling of the gantry water circuit must be performed with the WCS

 switched off. Operating the water pump of the WCS before the gantry water circuit
(Gantry WCS loop) has been (re)filled is prohibited! ==> Even short-term operation with‐
out water will destroy the water pump!

Always refer to the latest version of the document

 Read and observe the safety information contained in the “General” section of
this document and/or “Product-specific safety notes”.

2.3.2 Preliminary steps

 It is not necessary to drain the cooling system.

1. Switch off the WCS via breaker F14 in the PDC.

2.3.3 Removal
Fig. 5: Permanent bleeding valve

(1) valve housing

(2) valve adapter

 Do not unscrew the valve adapter( 2/Fig. 5 Page 13). This opens the water circulation
system and allows water to escape.

1. Remove the insulation cap from the bleeding valve .

2. Place absorbent cloth under the permanent bleeding valve, since water may escape
when the valve is opened.
3. Remove the bleeding valve by turning the valve housing ( 1/Fig. 5 Page 13) counter‐
clockwise.
 The valve is generally hand-tightened; therefore, no tools should be necessary
to remove it.

2.3.4 Installation
1. Install the valve in the reverse order of removal.

 The gaskets required in the water circulation system are included with the spare parts.
Always use the new gaskets when replacing these parts.

2. Tighten the housing ( 1/Fig. 5 Page 13) by hand only.

3. Install the insulation cap.

2.3.5 Final steps

1. Check water pressure (the manometer should be connected at the WCS “Gantry water
outlet”).

The nominal water pressure for the gantry water circuit is 2 +/-0.2 bar, with the WCS
 switched off. Refilling is required if the water pressure drops below 1.8 bar. Please refer
to ( Filling the cooling system / Page 11).

2. Switch on the WCS via breaker F14 in the PDC.

3. Check the WCS for leaks.

2.3.5.1 Testing

1. Perform test scans.

The spirovent bleeding device can be physically divided into two parts:
n the lower part ( 1/Fig. 6 Page 16), contains the bleeding mechanics
n the upper part ( 2/Fig. 6 Page 16), contains no mechanical movable parts
Only the upper part of the spirovent bleeding device is authorized to be replaced in
the field (FRU).

1. Switch off the WCS via breaker F14 in the PDC.

2. Place absorbent cloth under the spirovent because water may escape when the con‐
nection is opened.
3. Drain the system as described in ( Draining process / Page 10).

2.4.3 Removal
1. Open the styrofoam cover of the spirovent by undoing the cable tie.
2. Turn the upper part of the spirovent counterclockwise ( 2/Fig. 6 Page 16).
 When opening the connection, proceed with care if holding the lower part of

2.8 Cooling Pump (4807694)

This pump type (4807694) was discontinued as a spare part in early 2012.
From early 2012 onwards this pump was replaced by a new pump type (4015707).
In June 2017 the pump type (4015707) will also be discontinued as a sparepart and will
then be replaced by a newer pump type (10567043).

Changing from the old pump type (4807694) to the newer pump type (4015707 until
June 2017 and 10567043 from June 2017 onwards) requires a pump kit (4015756).
This pump kit contains the new pump, all necessary adapter parts and the installation

instructions.
This pump kit will be automatically delivered when an order is placed for the old type
pump type (4807694).

Since this old pump type (4807694) will no longer be replaced by the same type pump
and because the pump kit (4015756) to change from the old pump type (4807694) to
the newer pump type (4015707 or 10567043) also includes the Installation Instructions,
no replacement instruction for the old pump type are provided any longer in this chap‐
ter.
Replacement instructions for the newer pump types (4015707 and 10567043) are provi‐
ded in the next chapter.

This pump type (part no. 4015707) was delivered from early 2012 and will be discontin‐
ued as a spare part in mid 2017.
The newest pump type (part no. 10567043) will be delivered as a spare part from mid
2017 onwards and it replaces the pump type (4015707) as a sparepart.

 Changing from the pump type (4015707) to the newest pump type (10567043) does
NOT require a pump kit.
