country although it is the second largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta. It is also one of the most
important parts of the country historically, and there are many exciting attractions that make it worth
spending some time here. Surabaya is also a port, and with that in mind, you can enjoy sweeping vistas
across the water and also enjoy a walk along the street where you can look at many historical buildings
that were built by Dutch.

Surabaya was colonized by Dutch. That is why there are many European Area in Surabaya City
such as Jembatan Merah, Internatio Building, De Javasche Bank Museum, and many more. Most of
those places were Dutch heritage and a silent witness to the Indonesian nation’s struggle. Because of
that, some of the remains of former colonization have been made cultural heritage by the local
government. Although those places are old, the buildings are still sturdy and look beautiful. They have
good buildings or instagramable. We can also do anything at this heritages. Many citizens visit those
places for taking pictures.

Moreover, we can learn about the history of those places. People in there said that those places
have their mystery, but it is not a big deal, right? Because that is what’s interesting about historical
places. You can find the specific location where those places are on maps or google. As the city of
heroes, Surabaya has a lot of historical sites. You can spend your leisure time and learn something new.

Now we will introduce you some of the buildings. The first is Jembatan Merah. Jembatan Merah
is a building of a historical monument in Surabaya. Located at Kembang Jepun No.192, Nyamplungan,
Pabean Cantian, Surabaya East Java. This bridge is not too far from Tugu Pahlawan. This bridge was built
when Dutch colonialism Indonesia or at the VOC era and this bridge became the most important
connecting line at this era. So, the construction of the bridge has been hundreds of years old. Jembatan
Merah begins to change around 1980 where the guardrail which was made of wood was converted to
iron. Until now the bridge construction is still quite strong. As the name, this bridge is also painted in
red. Before, the paint used was yellow. When there was a battle at the beginning of independence, the
bridge was covered in red blood from the bodies of fighters and defenders of Indonesian independence.

Furthermore, to capture these memories, the bridge is considered to have an important

historical meaning. Besides that, it is also a historical maker that will be remembered by the next
generation. Moreover, this bridge is also related to the international building. When one of British Army,
Brigadier General Mallaby was killed by Arek-Arek Suroboyo or People of Surabaya in 10th November
1945. There is also a song of Jembatan Merah created by Gesang. This song is usually sung when the
ceremony of heroes day.
The second is Internatio Building or Internationale Crediten Handevereeniging. This building is
one of the heritage buildings in Surabaya when Dutch colonialism. The buildings were built with Dutch
Architect Berau in 1927. Moreover, this place was a barrack of BritishArmy when arrived in Surabaya on
25th October 1945. This place is located near to Jembatan Merah Plaza. There are so many historical
stories at this building and related to the Jembatan Merah. That is when Arek-Arek Suroboyo or people
of Surabaya surrounded this building and killed one of British Army, Brigadier General Mallaby. FYI,
during this time we consider that Mallaby was killed at Jembatan Merah. However, honestly, he was
killed in the car that was a bomb in there near Internatio Building. Until now the person who killed
Mallaby with the bomb is not detected.

For now, this building cannot be visited with the visitor because this place belongs the private
company. Moreover, as if this building is not used again. We just can see this building from a garden
near Jembatan Merah Plaza. Moreover, also around this building, there is a place of public
transportations and food stalls. That is why around this place little look undity. So I hope that this
building can be used as a cultural heritage and open to the public.

The third is Museum Indonesian Bank or Ex. De Javasche Bank. Ex. De Javasche is a museum
which used to be the central bank during the Dutch colonial era. When it was still active, it was defined
as the Central Bank of the Dutch East Indies. It is located at Garuda Street 1, South Krembangan. This
museum also not far from two places before. It is opened on 14th September 1829 and has sufficient
time on Japanese troops. On 1 July 1953, this building changed to become Indonesia Bank. However, in
1973, this building was not used again because its capacity was not good enough. Moreover, in the year
2012, this building finally becomes one of the historical places.

There are many unique items to be found inside the building. This museum has three floors. On
the first floor, there are three primary rooms inside. At the first room is designated to display the old
currency collection, you can see the displays of gold bars, paper money, coins which were used as a
trading exchange in the past. Move to the second room; it used to store building materials; we can see
the result of conservation in 2012 ago. Last, in the third room, there were printing machines and money-
crushing machines in ancient times. Besides that, there are also photographs of Surabaya in the past.
The museum does not provide the tour guide, but you can ask the staff there to accompany you for
looking around the museum. Brevity this place has been 186 years old and still sturdy. Also, this place is
silent witness the born of Indonesian Banking.

Those three places are in the same location. The way to go there is not complicated. From the
airport, we must go to purabaya bus station by airport bus. Then, we can have a city bus from
bungurasih. We need to pay Rp 6000, - for each person. Not only a city bus, but also Suroboyo bus. We
do not need to pay any more. However, we must bring plastic rubbishes such as plastic bottles or glasses
that will be changed by a ticket. We can bring three large bottles, five medium bottles, and ten glasses.
And actually there are still a lot of Dutch former heritage sites here. Such as the Dutch settlement which
is is located along Darmo rd. Moreover, Diponegoro rd., the Cerutu Building, Arcadia Hotel (Ibis Hotel)
and many more.
The government of Surabaya always make the places that are not used such as old buildings
become a tourism place. People in Surabaya also help the government to keep it. Moreover, the fact,
many people from other cities like to visit that place. Some of them also used for a wedding photo —
not only other cities but also other countries. Surabaya always has a big event every year that the guests
are from abroad. So, what are you waiting for ? Add your knowledge by visiting the Europian City in
