GUIDE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PROPER BUSINESS PRACTICES IN ENVIRONMENTAL

MANAGEMENT RELATED TO ROAD INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS IN COLOMBIA SUSTAINABLE
SYSTEM FOR ROAD WORKS
The real reason for the concern about the present situation of environmental responsibility arises
from the negative effects of change and alteration of the environment currently evidenced and
induced mainly due to the activities of growth and inappropriate use of resources of the
population worldwide. Now the concept of “sustainability” is used on which arises from the need
to achieve in all human actions a new respect for the environment, humanity and the economy,
that is a development with the use of resources in a reasonable manner.

Engineering and environment

Precisely, engineering has contributed to generate many of these changes in nature, among which
are those of great benefit to the population, but also those that are considered unsustainable
from an environmental and social perspective.

Environmental unsustainability, understood as the overflow of the limits imposed by nature, in

many cases has its origin in the patterns of production and consumption in themselves. But, as we
know, neither the engineering professionals who participated in the creation and implementation
of technologies that have been critical to solve various human needs, nor the beneficiaries of
them, imagined at the time that many of them could bring with them negative consequences that
we know today.

Pollution and civil Works.
For civil engineering, the main objective is to contribute to society, making use of natural
resources to be able to move forward with infrastructure and for society to meet all its needs,
always bearing in mind that we must take care of the Earth, which is our main home.

Reflections on the role of Civil Engineering in the evolution of the environment in Colombia.

Although Colombia's recent environmental deterioration is mainly explained by a strong

demographic and economic increase in conditions of very low state control, the construction of
infrastructure works has contributed significantly to this deterioration. The inclusion of
environmental considerations in large engineering projects has progressed in recent decades. In
the future, the challenge remains for the profession to assume, fully, a professional ethic that
incorporates environmental values and that puts the interests of society in general, including
future generations.

SUSTAINABILITY: CURRENT AND NEEDED IN THE CONSTRUCTION SECTOR IN COLOMBIA.

Construction, in addition to being indispensable for the development of society, is also one of the
main responsible for the generation of waste, pollution, transformation of the environment and
considerable use of energy. These reasons do not allow you to be indifferent to the current
environmental problem. This article, addressed to the academic and professional community,
presents a way of diagnosing the current situation of the construction sector in Colombia, in
relation to the environmental impact it generates. For this, it exposes a general context of the
construction in relation to its environmental impact, makes a chronological route through the
practices and strategies that, both historically and at present, affects the reduction of the
environmental impact and, finally, presents The results of a survey of a representative sample of
construction companies in the Aburrá Valley, Antioquia, which include aspects related to the
concept of sustainable construction and the actions that the company develops around the
environmental issue.
