1 Introduction
The AVEVA Diagrams application supports the creation of Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID),
HVAC and Cabling drawings for the various disciplines involved. The application is stand-alone and based
on the AVEVA Dabacon product that is the foundation for AVEVA E3D. Diagram layouts are created using
an embedded Microsoft Office Visio drawing control. All relevant data entered through the application is
stored into the Schematic Database. The training course is aimed at process engineers or draftsmen, and
will provide the necessary skills to use the AVEVA Diagrams application. The functions available in the
application include standard MS Visio functions, some standard AVEVA Plant Design or AVEVA Marine
Outfitting functions, and specific AVEVA Diagrams functions.
1.1 Aim
Over the duration of this training, the participants will learn to use the AVEVA Diagrams application, be familiar
with the creation and modification processes thoroughly, and prepare their design to release.
1.2 Objectives

2 AVEVA Diagrams
2.1 Overview
AVEVA Diagrams is an application that supports the creation of Piping & Instrumentation, Cabling and HVAC
diagrams. The stand-alone application is based on AVEVA Dabacon for data base storage and an
embedded Microsoft Office Visio drawing control. The functions available through the application menus
include standard MS Visio and specific AVEVA Diagrams functions.
The object data created through the AVEVA Diagrams application will be stored in a Schematic database. It
will be possible to re-use this data for 3D modelling through the use of the AVEVA Schematic 3D Integrator.

The diagram documents created through the AVEVA Diagrams application can be stored in the file system,
or alternatively an external document management system. There will also be index elements in the
database for each diagram, stencil and template. Diagrams, templates and stencils are listed and opened
through the DB index elements.
- Diagrams
- Templates MS Visio MS Visio MS Visio
Diagram Template Stencil
- Stencils File File File
When shapes are dragged from a stencil and dropped on to the diagram, a corresponding element will, if
possible, be automatically created in the database. This process is known as Define. In some cases the
Define operation will not take place until shapes are connected. It is also possible to manually Define and
Undefine items.
The application supports the Dabacon session concept with SaveWork / GetWork functions. In the
SaveWork function, the diagram document is also saved together with all pending DB changes for the
session. To ensure consistency between diagram documents and the database items, certain procedures
have been introduced, for instance when the user chooses Save As on a diagram, it is requirement that the
SaveWork function has first been executed.
The schematic data is organized in two parallel hierarchies. The main hierarchy is the Group Hierarchy,
which works more or less like a folder structure where schematic items can be organized according to
customer preferences. There is also a System Hierarchy, which represents the design systems within the
project. AVEVA Diagrams contains functions for the user to control in which Schematic Group new items will
be placed. Items will also be organized into the system structure according to the system reference attribute.
The database also maintains references between schematic items and the diagram drawings that they are
represented on. This for example allows the user to find and open all diagrams where a certain pipeline is
depicted.
To start AVEVA Diagrams, select a start-up Icon on the desktop if available or from the standard Microsoft
start option: All Programs > AVEVA > Engineer > Diagrams 14.1.1
This action will display the standard Diagrams login panel where the
student will select the project, enter the user name, password and
MDB selection.
In this case
User name = SYSTEM
Password = XXXXXX
MDB = A-PIPING
The basic layout of Diagrams is displayed showing the Microsoft Fluent Ribbon menus, The Schematic
Explorer and an area for diagrams to be created, displayed and edited.
At the bottom of the drawing panel is the message bar where information or errors will be displayed.
AVEVA Diagrams can operate in three different application modes which are P&ID
mode, HVAC mode, and Cable mode.
The Mode can be set by selecting P&ID mode / Cable mode / HVAC mode in Project
tab.
The selected mode will affect some of the commands available in the menus. For
instance, the Pipe > Create Pipeline command will only be available in Home tab when
using the P&ID mode.
AVEVA Diagrams uses tabs and sections within tabs which is referred here as the Ribbon Bar. The main
tabs for the Ribbon bar are as shown below:
Home tab
Tools tab
Manage tab
Insert tab
View tab
Depending on the shape and the application mode, when the user selects certain elements on a diagram
canvas, context sensitive tabs will be activated in addition to the Shape tab. A variety of context sensitive
tabs are shown below.
Highlighting a flow-arrow on the diagram
Highlighting any significant element will add an additional tab to the shape data which will reveal appropriate
commands.
The data structure that stores the intelligence behind the ‘drawing’ is hierarchical and at the top is the pre-
defined schematic world element. The next element is the schematic group. In the Schematic Explorer select
Schematic WORL* and then right click, and select New > SCGROUP: Schematic group from the right click
context menu. The group is created unnamed beneath the Schematic WORL*. Right click the group and
select Rename, the Name form appears; enter the name of the group and click the Apply. The SCGROU is
renamed and is visible in the Schematic Explorer.
Schematic groups (SCGROU) can have groups within groups, if so desired. However, the different
element types are automatically put into their individual groups by the application i.e. Diagrams,
Equipment, Pipelines, HVAClines, Stencils, Templates, and Cables
The Group name cannot contain spaces
Session Defaults form is a collection of preferences that can be set for an AVEVA Diagrams session which
includes systems, groups and attribute values.
The Session Defaults settings are accessed from the bottom right of the AVEVA Diagrams application.
Placing the cursor over this button will display a summary of the current settings.
To access and change these settings click the Session defaults and the Session Defaults form will be
displayed with three tabs; Default groups, Default systems and Default attributes.
If multiple diagrams are open the Session defaults will be applied to all open diagrams
The default groups must be set up prior to creation so that the individual elements know which group they
belong to i.e. if a diagram containing pipelines and equipment etc., then a group for equipment, pipeline, and
instruments would be required to be created to segregate them into individual groups based on element
type.
Click the Browse button next to any cell and the Select database element form appears:
If an existing diagram already has Pipelines, Equipment etc. that belong to Default groups, the Use the
Group of CE when a shape is defined checkbox can be checked. If this option is used the user should
check in the Schematic Explorer that the correct group (or any element in the group) is selected before
adding any element to the P&ID.
To set the default system, select the Default System Tab. Navigate through the database tree and select the
system required to become the default system and click the Apply button. Alternatively, the Search tab can
be used to find a system and select it.
The user can use the Unset link to un-set the Default
System
It is possible to keep the session variables described above in the registry. Project > Options >
Diagrams Options > General options > Settings stored in drawing section can be used for this purpose
1. Log in to the AVEVA Diagrams application using the user SYSTEM and password XXXXXX
MDB A-PIPING
2. Create a new group e.g. Training in the Schematic Explorer for storing all elements created from
future exercises.
The Schematic Explorer can be used to navigate in the Schematic World in the database. If the Schematic
Explorer is not visible, it can be displayed using the Explorers > Schematic Explorer from the View tab.
In this explorer the user can see the primary Schematic Group
hierarchy. Below each schematic group, the items are further
sub-grouped by Folders. Folders do not exist in the database,
they are only a way to display items of the same type, together,
and provide a better navigation and overview.
Above the navigation tree is a Filter checkbox as well as a drop
down list where predefined filters can be selected. If the Filter
checkbox is checked, the selected filter will be applied to the
explorer tree. Currently there are tree filters available, one for
each discipline (Piping, HVAC, and Electrical).
The Schematic Explorer also has a right click context menu that provides common commands against
different element types.
The Schematic Explorer shows the entire contents of the database and not only the current drawing.
Also, operations done through the explorer such as rename etc., will only affect the database. To see
such changes in an un-opened drawing, the user may need to use the Refresh command
The user can add DB elements selecting an appropriate type from New command in the right click
context menu of any element in the Schematic Explorer. Available element types in the New command
list will differ depending on the CE selection and this command will be disabled if it is not possible to
create any sub-elements at a level
The System Explorer can be used to navigate the System Hierarchy in the schematic database. It can be
displayed by selecting Explorers > System Explorer from the View tab.
In the System Explorer the user can see the Systems hierarchy.
Below each system, the items are sub-grouped by Folders. Folders
do not exist in the database, they are only a way to display items of
the same type, together, and provide a better navigation tool.
Main schematic items such as Pipelines, Equipment elements and Instruments are members in the system
hierarchy through their SCSYSF attribute, which contains an array of system references. This means that a
schematic element can be a member of more than one system simultaneously, thereby appearing in several
places in the System Explorer tree. The first system in the array is considered as the primary system, and
others are considered secondary. By default, all subordinate elements are considered to be members of the
same system as the parent Pipeline or Equipment element. However it is possible for the user to override
this by setting a different system reference on a subordinate element, i.e. a special valve or a sub-equipment
element.
In this case that particular element would both appear below the parent element (Pipeline, Equipment) in the
system explorer, and also by itself under the system set against that element.
Diagrams are shown under all systems to which the elements on the diagram
belong. This includes both primary and secondary systems.
On the System Explorer form there is a Filter checkbox as well as drop down list
where predefined filters can be selected. If the Filter checkbox is checked, the
selected filter will be applied to the System Explorer tree. There is currently one
filter available for each discipline (Piping, HVAC, and Electrical).
The System Explorer also features a right click context menu that provides
common commands.
The System Explorer shows the entire contents of the database and not
only the current drawing. Some of the administrative elements such as the
SYSCDA (System Catalogue Data Element) and SYSMDA (System Dataset
Element) are however hidden in order not to clutter the tree view
For more information on system creation please see the AVEVA Diagrams
14.1 Administration guide (TM-3534).
The Project Explorer can be used to view database elements in a different hierarchy than the Schematic and
System Explorers. The way the database elements are represented will depend on the way that the Explorer
is set up.
For more information on Explorers set-up please see the AVEVA Diagrams Administration (TM-3534)
Training Guide
From the Home tab select Home > Windows > Project Explorer command. The Explorer will be displayed
with the current set-up applied to the relevant database items.
Depending on the configuration of the explorer, the user can view different items related to the database
elements in question.
It is possible to view the database elements’ datasheet attached to their Engineering datasheets. If an item
appears on a diagram, it is possible to view the item on that diagram using the PBS (Project Breakdown
Structure) as well.
It is possible also to have dynamic display of Icons for PBS text node in the flexible explorer. If there is a
need to change the formula based icon depending on values of parent node by using parameters pointing to
appropriate node in hierarchy.
For more information on parametrizing icons for text nodes in flexible explorer, please see the AVEVA
Diagrams Administration (TM-3534) Training Guide
The Message Log shows messages that occur when the application is being used. Messages can have
different severity (Error, Warning or Information) as indicated by the icons. In case a message is related to a
particular shape in the drawing, this is indicated by the shape name in the Shape column and the page
number in the Page column. In this case it is also possible to click the message to select the related shape in
the drawing. If the shape is not available on the drawing any more (i.e. was deleted or drawing is closed),
the page number disappears after the first click on the line. When the shape is not visible in the drawing
window, the window will pan / zoom as necessary.
Message The icon displayed indicates the severity of the message (Error, Warning or Information)
followed by a brief description of the message.
Shape Name of the Visio shape that the message is related to
Connection Connection number of the shape which the message is related to.
This is only shown if the message is related with a certain connection point on the shape
DB Element Name of DB element that the shape is related to. This is only shown if the message is
related to a shape that has a corresponding DB element. This will be displayed as a DB
element reference number if no name has yet been given to the element.
Page Page number in the drawing on which the related shape exists. This is only shown if
the message is related to a shape
The Status bar panel for the Message Log flashes when
the Message Log window is not open. Opening the
Message Log reveals the actual error message that
caused the flashing
From the Project tab select New > New Diagram or using the Home tab select New. The Choose Template
form appears. From the tree select the folder that holds the Templates i.e. Project_Templates, all of the
available templates under the folder are now visible, select the template required and then click the Open
button. A new blank diagram is opened complete with the border as a background. If no template is to be
used, then click No template to open a new blank drawing.
The new diagram will not exist on the DB until the Save Work
function has been actuated
Browse in the tree to select SCGROU SCHEMATICS-PIPING-AREA01 where the diagram is to be saved
and then key the name TRA_Diagram_Additional_Drawings and click the Save button.
This name will be used and displayed for the off page
connectors (OPC)
It is possible to save a diagram as another with the copy of database elements. The Save As command
includes an option to copy all the database items with the Visio drawing. This can be used to create a copy
of a P&ID where new database items are created and linked with a new diagram that is created or secondary
(referral) shapes only.
When the Save As command is selected from the Project tab, it will bring up the dialogue previously shown.
Please note the Copy DB Items checkbox, for the database elements to be replicated, must be checked
otherwise a copy of the drawing is created with every item undefined.
There are then series of options which will only be available if applicable to the drawing being copied, i.e. if
no cables were included on the drawing the last option would be greyed out.
Create secondary shapes Selecting this will grey out the remaining options and create a diagram
copy that refers to the same database items as the original.
Create primary shapes Selecting this will enable all the options below that are applicable and
create a diagram copy that refers to the new database items.
Copy owning equipment not on current diagram This will only be available if a sub-equipment item
exists on the diagram to be copied and the owning
equipment for this item exists on a different
diagram.
Copy sub-equipment not on current diagram This will only be available if the diagram contains
equipment that owns sub-equipment items which
are not represented on the current diagram.
Copy nozzles not on current diagram This will only be available if the diagram contains
equipment that is also represented by a secondary
shape on another diagram and the secondary
equipment has nozzles that are not represented on
the current diagram.
Copy electrical connections not on current diagram This will only be available if the diagram contains
equipment that is also represented by a secondary
shape on another diagram and the secondary
equipment has electrical connection items which
are not represented on the current diagram, this
option should be checked to also copy those
electrical connections.
Copy cores with cables This will only be available if the diagram contains
cables that own cores.
There is also the option to carry out a Refresh copied drawing checkbox to process a Refresh command on
the newly created drawing.
When all the options required are selected and the OK button is clicked then process will run and the
message log will provide updates on the progress.
To open an existing diagram select Open from the Project tab, the Open form appears. Browse in the tree to
where the existing diagram is located, then select the diagram and click the Open button.
To open an existing stencil select Open from the Project tab, the Open form appears. Browse in the tree to
where the existing stencil is located, then select the stencil and click the Open button.
Alternatively the stencil can be opened by selecting it from the Schematic Explorer and then double
clicking or right clicking and selecting Open. The stencil is docked into the already open Shapes form
For more information on stencil and symbol creation please see the AVEVA Diagrams Administration
(TM-3534) Training Guide
1. Create new diagram under the SCGROU SCHEMATICS-PIPING-AREA01, select the template e.g.
SCTEMP AVEVA_A2
The Microsoft Visio sub-window contains the diagram drafting canvas and provides access to the stencils as
well as the attributes through the Shape Data window. Shape attributes are available through the Shape
Data window, a right click on a diagram element or the Attributes Utility.
There are right click context menus available for shapes as well as for the
drawing background providing shortcuts for common functions.
However, when an item is selected in the Schematic Explorer, it will not be selected in the drawing
automatically. There is a Select in Drawing command on the right click context menu in the Schematic
explorer.
Visio Options can be used to alter some of these settings, i.e. zoom with the scroll wheel of the mouse.
A number of function keys are available for easy access and commonly used commands. The ones
highlighted in yellow below are standard Visio functions.
Equipment items can be created by dragging and dropping equipment shapes from the stencil to the drafting
canvas. The application includes support for Primary and Secondary equipment items, meaning that a single
equipment item in the database can be represented by two or more shapes on the same or on different
drawings.
Sub-equipment items can also be created by dragging and dropping a sub-equipment shape from a stencil
onto the drawing. However, for the sub-equipment shape to be defined in the database, it is required the
equipment item to which should belong is currently selected when the drop takes place.
Sub-equipment items are not dependent on their parent equipment item being represented on the same
diagram. It is allowed to have the main equipment item on one diagram and the sub-equipment item on
another diagram, even if they are hierarchically linked in the database. Likewise, when and if they appear on
the same diagram, there are no layout restrictions in terms of them having to be connected or close to each
other in any way.
From the Sample_Equipment_Symbols drag the Vessel symbol in to the drafting canvas. The equipment
symbol is added to the drafting canvas. The equipment does not yet have a name and has only a database
reference number i.e. =23996/6178 is shown.
Using the Shape Data window information can be entered as required, i.e. a Name and Description.
The equipment naming for AVEVA Schematic 3D Integrator to build. For more information about the
AVEVA Schematic 3D Integrator please see the AVEVA Plant – AVEVA Schematic 3D Integrator (TM-
3561) Training Guide
If the naming rules is set by using [name] instead of [namn], the equipment name will be displayed as
below:
The / can be removed from the name by typing [namn] instead of [name] in the Shape Data Window. The
[\n] will force the text after this onto another line, and the [desc] will then display the description field.
Remember to SaveWork so the elements are saved to the dabacon DB If the connection points of
elements are not shown on drafting canvas check the Conn. Points checkbox in View tab
Nozzle shapes can be added to equipment items by dragging and dropping onto an equipment item. They
can be attached to a connection point on the equipment item or just to the geometry. Nozzle items will then
be created under the equipment item in the DB. In case a nozzle shape is not connected to an equipment
item on drop, it can be connected later, and will not be defined in the database until it is connected to an
equipment item.
From the Sample_Equipment_Symbols drag the Nozzle symbol in to the drafting canvas. Move the nozzle
over one of the equipment connections until the connection point is highlighted, then release the nozzle. The
Nozzle symbol is added to the equipment in the drafting canvas. No name is now displayed on the nozzle as
nothing exists in the text field on the Shape Data window. The Nozzle is also shown in the Schematic
Explorer.
If the user first drops the nozzle onto the drawing and then later drags it to connect it to the equipment
item it may need to be grabbed close to the connection point. Here it also helps to zoom in. If the user
doesn’t do that it might be difficult to connect it to the equipment item in the proper way
The nozzle can be set-up to orientate itself to equipment connection points when it is dragged close to
them. This behaviour is set in the Microsoft Visio shape sheet, not accessible from AVEVA Diagrams,
for more information on creating symbols please see the AVEVA Administration (TM-3534) Training
Guide
The nozzle specification can be set by right clicking on the nozzle shape and selecting Nozzle Specification
from the context menu. The Nozzle Specification form appears with the available selections from Nozzle
Specification, from the pull down options change the Specification to ANSI-NOZZLES(ANSI-NOZZLES),
Generic Type to 300lb Ansi Flanges and Nominal Bore to 100 and then click the OK button.
Now the pipeline can be connected to the nozzle by dragging the end vertex of the pipeline to the nozzle
holding until the Glue to Connection Point prompt appears. When the pipeline is connected to the nozzle the
end vertex changes from green to red and will update the CREF attribute of the nozzle.
A nozzle has two connection points the one that attaches to the equipment has an Outward connection
and the one that connects to the pipeline has an Inward connection point. For more information on
creating symbols please see the Administration (TM-3534) Training Guide
Sub-equipment shapes can be added from the SCSTEN Sample_Stencil to equipment items by selecting
the equipment first e.g. Vessel from the drawing canvas or from the Schematic Explorer and then dragging
and dropping onto an equipment item. It can be attached to the equipment item or just to the geometry. Once
the Sub-equipment dropped on to the drawing canvas it will be assigned to the Vessel and the colour of the
sub-equipment will be changed to blue even when it was not attached to the Vessel. Sub-equipment items
will then be created under the equipment item in the DB.
In case the equipment was not selected before dragging and dropping the sub-equipment shape from the
stencil on to the equipment e.g. the Vessel: The Sub-equipment will not be an assigned to the Vessel even if
the sub-equipment is attached to the Vessel and the sub-equipment colour will still black that’s mean it’s not
defined and will not be created in the data base.
AVEVA Diagrams supports a 3D Position (POS) attribute for relevant schematic database elements, which
can be utilised if the information is known. This position is independent of the 3D position of any related 3D
elements. This can be handled in different ways using AVEVA Schematic 3D Integrator. It is for instance
possible to copy the initial 3D position given for the schematic element to the corresponding 3D element
during the build process.
The position attribute can be changed in the Shape Data window as shown.
Use XYZ coordinates by typing co-ordinates xyz in command line. And refresh after to update shape
data.
Equipment label can be connected to any point on the shape and not only to the associated connection
point
To duplicate equipment in AVEVA Diagrams, the user needs to copy the intended shape using the Copy and
Paste commands from the right click context menu or by dragging the shape whilst holding down the Ctrl
key.
Select the click the Create button from the Secondary question form and click
the Use source groups button from the Paste form
For the purpose of this example, the user should create an equipment with
2 Nozzles and a Sub-equipment as displayed above or use the Vessel and
Sub shape which is available in the Sample_Equipment_Symbols
stencil.
Using Ctrl+drag method: If the equipment has a sub-equipment shape and it is copied using the Ctrl+drag
method (after selecting the elements to be copied), new equipment will be created and the user will be only
prompted to create a new sub-equipment item or create a secondary shape for it using the group information
from the session defaults.
When copying shapes that reside under equipment items in the database, draw a fence to select all
instances to be copied on the drawing canvas.
Where there are two equipment shapes each with individual sub-equipment items, as shown below, the
method used to copy and paste can result in different outcomes as the shapes are defined in the database.
Using the Ctrl+drag method when the owner of another sub-equipment is not selected to be copied will result
in addition of this sub-equipment to the copied main equipment element.
Using Copy / Paste commands from the right click context when the owner of another sub-equipment is not
selected to be copied will result in remaining this sub-equipment undefined.
When copying equipment items using source groups, it is possible to re-create the hierarchy (with number of
SCGROU elements with respect to Schematic World) if a new database item is to be created. To be able to
do this, use existing groups setting in Diagrams Options > General options > System configuration >
Intelligent copy should be set to Never.
If this is set to Ask the system will prompt a question for each time the equipment item requires a
hierarchical group creation.
The newly copied equipment item will appear in the Schematic Explorer as the same hierarchical depth as
the source item.
It is possible to click Use existing button at any level to create the newly copied equipment item and any
SCGROU item if required.
1. Select the Centrifugal Pump shape from Sample_Stencil, Name the pump e.g. P001and then add
the Nozzles from the same Stencil e.g. N1 and N2.
Please note that it is also possible to set the nozzle name as required e.g. (N1, N2….etc.)
by adding {after(namn,'/')} to the Text field to avoid having the same name twice.
A. Select the Pump and the Nozzles copy them using the Ctrl+drag method and click the New
DB item button.
B. Delete the copy and select P001 with the nozzles N1 and N2. Right click, select the Copy
option from the right click context. Select the desired place on the drawing canvas, right click
and select Paste option from the right click context, then click the Create New button, and
then click the Use session defaults button.
2. Select the Vessel with Sub shape from the Stencil i.e. Sample_Equipment_Symbol, rename the
shape e.g. V001, add the Nozzles e.g. N1 and N2.
3. Select the Vessel, the Nozzles and the Sub-equipment, right click and then select the Group >
Group option from the right click context.
4. Select Ctrl+ drag and drop the equipment on to the drawing canvas then click the Secondary
Shape button from the Question form.
Pipelines can be created using the Pipe > Create Pipeline command from the Home tab. When the Create
Pipeline dialogue is opened, a number of attributes will have values pre-set. These are just default values
and can be changed by the user.
The Pipeline type comes from the Linetype attribute on the 3D Pipe element. As the pipelines are fed
through the AVEVA Schematic 3D Integrator, this is used as one of the attributes for naming i.e., the
formula in the AVEVA Schematic 3D Integrator configuration file for the rule to name a pipe from an
SCPLIN is: Format ('/{0}-{1}-{2:D3}-{3}', source.BORE, source.LNTP, source.NUMBER,
Substring(source.PSPE, 1)). If there is more than one SCPLIN with these attributes unset there will be a
problem, as it constructs a name that already existed when it comes to build the SCPLIN. By setting
different values into these attributes on the SCPLIN, the user can construct a different name and so
should be able to build the pipeline
Type Shows the User Defined Element Types (UDET) for pipeline types, if no user-defined
pipelines have been set-up in the dictionary database the default Pipeline will be
the only available option.
Group Is set from the default group settings available in the Status Bar. This can be
changed using the Browse button next to it.
Primary System Is set from the current system setting available in the Status Bar. This can be
changed using the Browse button next to it.
Secondary System Shows the system(s) that this pipeline should belong to, in addition to the Primary
System. This can be modified using the icons next to it. (Will come from the system
if the primary system is set)
On the Specification Tab the Pipe Specification, Insulation Specification, Tracing Specification, and Fluid
values will be populated from the default value of the Primary system, if they have been set in the system.
The pipeline name can be automatically constructed by using the Autonaming function. In order to provide
feedback on the Autonaming while the dialogue is open, a pipeline element is actually created as the
dialogue is opened. If the user clicks the Cancel button, this pipeline element will be removed again. If the
user clicks OK, the pipeline will be created in the selected group (SCGROU) in the main hierarchy of the
schematic database.
There are a number of tabs, Description, Specification, Temperature, Pressure and User Defined Attributes.
Each of these cells holds attribute information that will be stored against the element in the database. All this
information can be changed by the user.
If the Pipe command is not available in the Home tab ensure the mode is set to P&ID Mode, this can be
changed from the Project tab, by selecting P&ID Mode
To customize the line name style user (s) need to change the default Text of the line from the Shape
Data from : [ABORE]-[{linetype of scpline}]-[{STRING (NUMB OF SCPLINE)}]-[{AFTER (STRING
(PSPEC) , '/')}][{REPLACE ((BEFORE (REPLACE (STRING (ISPEC), '=0/0' , '') , 'mm' )) , '/' , '-')}] to :
[scplin.namn][\n][:PMGDESC]
In the Description tab the description field is mandatory by default. This could be changed via the
Description setting in Element options > Pipeline options in Diagrams Options
If the user displays Pipeline properties for a SCBRAN element on the drafting canvas, Diagram
References tab will be displayed additionally in the tabs in the Pipe Properties form
The Specification tab has browse buttons for each different specs which allow the user to navigate to choose
a Pipe spec., Insulation spec., Tracing spec, and/or Fluid. For this purpose a standard form is used for
several tasks where a DB reference is to be set. The dialogue enables the user to navigate the relevant parts
of the database hierarchy as well as search for items by a text search. When the OK button is clicked, the
reference to the selected item will be returned to the user interface component from which the dialogue was
called.
The standard DB browse dialogue also has a search tab. The search is not case sensitive and the asterisk
(*) character can be used as a wildcard denominator.
Once the Create Pipeline form has been populated with the required information, click the OK button. Now in
the Schematic Explorer there should be a new SCPLIN element under the SCGROU Training created in the
database.
From the SAMPLE_Pipeline_Symbols drag the Branch symbol in to the drafting canvas, the pipeline
changes to the default colour set up in the Diagrams Options for Pipeline options.
The defined pipeline is now displayed in the drawing canvas with its complete label which is defined in
Shape text options. In the Schematic Explorer the SCPLIN element now has a SCBRAN, SCSEG and a
SCTUB visible as shown.
The displayed text for elements can be hidden by right clicking while the vertexes are highlighted on the pipe
line and un-ticking the Show Text or when selecting the element shape;
Navigate for Shape tab then check the Show Text tick box in the Annotation group.
A default state option of shape can be set to show or hide the shape text by;
Navigate to Project > Option > Diagrams Option > Pipeline options then set the Text visible by default
option to True from the shape text options part to show the text.
Further options for the text behaviour can be defined in the Diagrams Options > Pipeline Options section.
i.e. the ability to only show the Text on the first segment of the pipeline that is drawn:
If several lines exist in the drawing canvas the user should pay extra attention on the Current Line,
before proceeding to create branches and add fittings etc. This is however not done by clicking in the
status bar, and instead done by selecting a line in the schematic explorer. The Current Line can be
checked from the Status Bar as shown
If process or instrument lines cross on a drawing, but are not connected to one another, Visio will apply
a default Line jump style of an arc. This can be changed to a gap or the users preferred notation by
selecting Options > Page Setup from the Project tab, altering the Line jump style in the Layout and
Routing tab
From the Sample_Valve_Symbols drag the Gate Valve in to the drafting canvas area and place it into the
branch. A Search Specification form appears for the user to choose an STYP for the selected symbol, select
the specific type and click OK
The valve changes to the default colour set up in the Diagrams Options for Valve options. The defined inline
component is now displayed in the drafting canvas complete with a label. The elements hierarchy will be re-
organised in the Schematic Explorer.
The displayed text for the valve can be changed by using the dot notation in the text field in the Shape Data
window and changing the dot notation.
From the Sample_Fitting_Symbols drag the Tee Fitting symbol in to the drafting canvas and place it into the
branch, the Tee Fitting is highlighted. The Search Specification form appears asking for the Branching Bore?
From the list select 50 and click the OK button.
The user can use Edit > Copy Attributes and Edit > Paste Attributes for identical components
The inline fitting changes to the default colour set up in the Diagrams Options for Fitting options. The defined
inline component is now displayed in the drafting canvas complete with a label. The elements hierarchy will
be re-organised in the Schematic Explorer.
In Diagrams Options - Element Options > Fitting Options > Default Options, if the setting Auto create
branch on connect Tee is True this will automatically add a new branch shape when a Tee is dropped
into a line.
Automatic tee insertion enables the insertion of a tee every time two branches are connected by the user. At
the connection point of the branches a predefined tee shape is inserted. If there is any specification or
dimensioning conflicts the appropriate dimensioning and size selection dialogues are presented to the user.
All related options are located in Fitting options in the Element options section within the Diagrams Options.
In the options dialogue it is also possible to select the shape of the tee to be automatically inserted on
connection of two branches, as well as from which stencil this shape should be taken.
The option for “Auto create Tee on connect branch” is by default set to False. The Automatic Tee Insertion
function can be turned on or off from here.
It is left to the user to make sure that the tee’s shape name and stencil are existing and valid. If a tee
with such shape name is not found or stencil with such name is not found errors will be generated
during the usage of the function
Once auto create Tee on connect branch is set to True and valid references are given for the stencil and
symbol, then every time two branches are connected the tee symbol specified in the Diagrams Options is
created. This process involves one branch that is dragged (either an end point or the branch as a whole) and
one that is stationary; the tee symbol will be inserted on the stationary branch with the branch of the tee
connected to the dragged branch.
It is possible to copy a pipeline or part of it on the drafting canvas. Selecting the desired part of the line and
selecting Copy from the right click context menu will copy the elements selected with their reference
If the name of the current pipeline already exists in the database, depending on the settings in Diagrams
Options > General options > System configuration, the user will be prompted whether they want to create a
new line or create a new branch under the existing line.
Using the existing line to create a branch will look like as shown:
If the user selects to create a new line then the group of the line needs to be
determined using either the groups from the source elements or the
information from the session defaults.
Select Use session default option, then new window will be displayed:
If the user selected Use source group option new window will be displayed:
From the Sample_Fitting_Symbols drag the Concentric Reducer symbol in to the drafting canvas and place it
into the branch, the Concentric Reducer is highlighted. The Search Specification form appears asking for the
Leave Bore? From the list select 80 and click the OK button.
The inline fitting changes to the default colour set up in the Diagrams Options for Fitting options. The defined
inline component is now displayed in the drafting canvas complete with label. The elements also exist in the
Schematic Explorer.
For the reducer to show only the dimensions, type in the text attribute [spre.catr.para(1)] x
[spre.catr.para(2)], to show the units use or [lbore.withunit] in Shape Data window
If a reducer is flipped, the Arrive Bore will be 2 and Leave Bore will be 1
1. Create a Pipeline: 150mm bore size and SPEC A3B specification and connect the Pipeline to the
Vessel V001 from the previous exercise.
4. Add a Reducer e.g. select Leave bore size = 65mm, STYP = ECC and A3B/NE150X50
3.13 Instrumentation
Offline instruments can be connected to any pipeline or inline fitting. It is also possible to have connection
points on the off-line instrument, allowing control lines to be attached.
From the SAMPLE_Instrumentation drag the Off Line Instrument shape into the drafting canvas. This symbol
is configured such that the instrument type determines the text displayed. In the Shape Data window change
the default to PI 123.
The Text, Text size, Line format and Colour can be changed manually if required
The offline instrument SCOINS also appears in the Schematic Explorer and Schematic Project Explorer as
shown:
If an instrument is to be associated to a symbol, i.e. a control valve or orifice plate then the instrument
can be connected in the same way as above, but dragging the instrument connection line onto the
symbol
To prevent the instrument connection line crossing the symbol the connection point can be moved, this
can only be done after the initial association has been made. To move the connection point on the
symbol, select the Connection Point Tool available via the Home tab. The instrument connection line
can then be selected and the connection point moved
The majority of instruments used will be covered by the off-line instrument section, where a line fitting is
associated with an off-line instrument. An orifice plate, can be described as an in-line instrument and have
an association with the offline instrument. Instrumentation lines can then be used to connect the offline
instruments.
Control valves can also be drawn as in-line instruments and therefore cannot be directly connected to
instrumentation lines. The association between a control valve and an instrumentation line is made via an
actuator. Therefore control valves are added in two stages.
Firstly, a symbol representing the control valve can be inserted in the normal way and attached to a pipeline.
In the Schematic explorer this arrangement will be shown in two sections, the control valve as part of the
pipeline and the actuator in a group of its own. The control valve is added as an in-line instrument to the
hierarchy and given the code SCINST, this is part of the pipeline. The two SCINST items shown in the
schematic explorer are the orifice place (FE-321) created in the previous section and the control valve above
(FCV-321)
The actuator has a group of its own and is shown with the code SCACTU.
In the example below the CV is modelled as a combined symbol and hence will be inserted in the database
as a SCINS. The ‘bubble’ is filled in by naming the Instrument FCV-221
The circular instrument balloon can be configured to hold the valve name, i.e. FCV-321 in the import
shape wizard options
For more information on creating symbols please see the AVEVA Diagrams 14.1 Administration guide
(TM-3534) - Chapter5.
These shapes can be used to show not only the connections between off-line instruments and actuators but
also replacing instrument lines, in order to demonstrate a high level of instrument connectivity. An Instrument
Relationship Shape does not represent a database element, but does connect the attached items in the
database.
Instrument lines are created in a similar way to pipeline elements, they are firstly created in the database and
then added to the drawing using a symbol from the stencil.
The instrument line can then be created. This can be done by selecting the Instrument > Create
Instrument Line from the Home tab.
The Create Instrument Line dialogue will then appear, fill out the information as required.
Add the instrument loop association from the Browse button next to the Instrument Loop field.
Select OK button.
Once OK button is clicked from the Create Instrument Line window, Instrument Line will be created and
shown in the Schematic Explorer and in the Project Explorer:
The process of placing an instrument line on a drawing is quite similar to that of pipes. Here, the instrument
line should be selected in the Schematic Explorer before placing any inline components on the drawing.
Select the Instrument branch symbol from the Sample_Instrumentation_Symbols_2 stencil and drag to the
drafting canvas. The user will be then asked to select specification and bore according to the Diagrams
Options settings and default values.
Or the user can create the instrument line shape as desired and save it in the Stencil
The created line will now be visible in the Schematic Explorer, in the same manner as a created
pipe would be.
To create the Instrument loop first select Instrument > Create Instrument Loop from the Home tab.
A dialogue box will then appear where the details for the loop can be entered.
Using the Type drop down list, the SCLOOP element type and all UDET:s derived from SCLOOP can be
selected. The user can select the group to create the loop in and enter the loop name. In this case an F is
used to denote a Flow type of loop and the number of the loop, e.g. 321. It’s also possible to use the
autonaming rules to name the loop by checking the Use autonaming checkbox.
The Attributes and User defined attributes tab allow the user to enter values in for the shown attributes.
Once Ok button is clicked the loop is created and will appear in the Schematic Explorer.
An instrument loop is a collection of related instrument lines, i.e. if a flow rate is being controlled the flow will
be measured by an instrument (FE-321) and converted to an electrical signal by a transmitter (FT-321). This
will be transferred to a controller (in this case a flow indicator controller FIC-321) which will convert this flow
signal into an action for a flow control valve. The final item in this control loop is a signal converter (FY-321)
that takes the electrical signal and converts this into a compressed air pressure to operate the diaphragm
control valve.
Valve actuator can be assigned to an instrument loop too when the loop is created or at later time as well.
1. Use the previous information to create Instrument Loop consist of: FE-123,FCV-123,FY-123, FIC-
123,R.O-123 and FT-123
2. Check the Schematic Explorer and see how the loop will be looked like?
A. Add new valve e.g. Gate Valve comp. shape, from the Sample_Stencil, name it e.g.
FCV123. Then add Actuator Dia. shape to Valve from same Stencil.
B. Delete the signal line between FCV123 and FY123, and then create Instrument line to
connect them.
For pipes that end without any connection to an equipment item, Pipe Destination elements can be used. A
Pipe Destination shape can be attached to the end of a branch, and can contain a description of the nature
of the branch end. This can for instance be when the pipe vents to atmosphere or discharges to a drain etc.
Pipe Destination elements will also remove unnecessary information messages from the consistency check
results, such as the “Shape not connected at connection point”.
The pipe destination symbol when created only has one connection point, the Import Shape Wizard is used
and is located under the Element types > Pipe components > Pipe destination
AVEVA Diagrams allows the creation of discontinuous Pipelines through the use of an Off-Page Connector
(OPC) mechanism. Even though these are called Off-Page Connectors, they can also be used within a page.
Two variants of Off-Page Connectors are supported by the AVEVA Diagrams application, Outgoing and
Incoming. Off-Page connectors are created by dragging an OPC shape onto the drawing and connecting it to
a free end of a pipeline branch.
From the tab at the bottom of the drafting canvas, right click and from the context menu select Insert Page.
The Page Setup form appears, the default name is Page-2. If no Page-2 exists to create a Page-2, click the
OK button. Page-2 is created as an empty drafting canvas.
From Page-1 of a multi-page diagram, select the pipe line in the drafting canvas that requires the Off-Page
Connector to be added, this line is now the current line. Select the tab Page-2 and then drag the Branch
symbol into the drafting canvas.
In the Schematic Explorer SCBRAN 2 is created, select Page-1 again and then drag the Outgoing OPC from
the Sample_Pipeline_Symbols Stencil into the drawing canvas and add it to the end of pipeline. Reselect
Page-2 and from the stencil drag the Incoming OPC into the drafting canvas and connect it to the beginning
of the pipeline.
With the vertices of the incoming OPC selected and highlighted, right click and select Connect OPC from its
context menu. The Select database element form appears. Use the database tree to navigate to the
SCOPCO element and then click the OK button.
The When the OPC elements are connected to the pipeline the Schematic Explorer will be re-arranged
to organise the hierarchy to have one branch and two segments
Re-select Page-1 and refresh the drawing, the reference to the other OPC is now visible.
Now in the Shape Data window for both OPC elements and enter the Text field
[opcref.owner.diarefarray(1)] - Page [opcref.owner.pagearray(0)]
Outgoing OPC
Incoming OPC
If the diagram is not saved then the text attribute of the OPC will not be displayed correctly
The OPC connections can also be listed and navigated on a Diagram level. By right clicking on a
Diagram Element in the database explorer and selecting Open Diagram command from the context
menu, all diagrams connected to the current one will be listed
The OPC also appears in the schematic explorer, under the appropriate Pipeline, branch and segment as a
Diagram Element. In the schematic explorer the owning element of the OPC, i.e. a branch or pipeline can be
selected and a right click context menu gives the option of Open Diagram command, all diagrams
connected to the current pipeline will be listed in a dialogue box allowing the user to select the appropriate
diagram. It is also possible to navigate to the connected diagram elements using the right click context menu
of SCDIAG items in Schematic Explorer.
A pipeline can be split into two separate pipelines by using a Pipe Splitter shape. From the
Sample_Pipeline_Symbols stencil drag the Pipe splitter symbol and drop it onto the pipeline where the
pipeline should be split. The Pipeline Properties form appears. Change any of the fields and then click the
OK button.
If the Pipe Splitter does not split the line as it is being dropped, try to zoom in and make sure that the
cross hair is properly aligned with the line
The user will then have to give a different name to the new pipeline.
The pipeline text will not update automatically on the drawing canvas, this can be done by clicking on
the Refresh button
In the Schematic Explorer, the inline fittings or valves of the split pipe will then
be transferred to the new pipeline.
To join two pipelines together, from the drafting canvas select the pipeline that is to retain its name when
they are joined together, now holding down the Shift or Ctrl key select the other pipeline that is to be joined.
From the Home tab select Pipe > Join lines, this will join the two pipelines together. All branches complete
with inline fittings and valves will be transferred to the target pipeline and the now empty source pipeline will
be deleted automatically.
If a pipeline is created without a piping specification, the SpecSearch utility can be used to initiate the set-up
the specification reference to the downstream inline parts. Changing the specification of existing pipe can be
done by selecting the first tube element in a pipeline without a specification and then right clicking and
selecting Pipeline Properties from the context menu. After changing the Specification using this dialogue,
click OK button. Right click the tube again and select SpecSearch or Refit from context menu.
To be able to refit the inline items in the Diagrams Options, the Use Specification setting in General
Options > Pipe Dimensioning > Spec Search, Refit – Propagate Autofit, Refit – Propagate at Segment
and Refit – Propagate at Branch settings in General Options > Pipe Dimensioning > Refit options must
be all set to True
The spec selection process will automatically be triggered and changes to specification references can be
followed up by viewing the Message Log window.
In order to get a good overview of what happens during this operation, it is recommended to only to
change the specification of a reasonable number of parts in the same
operation. This makes it easier to follow up and trace any changes
4.6 Refit
If a bore size inconsistency has occurred, the Refit function can be used. This can occur when a reducer is
inserted and the Propagate autofit setting is set to False in Diagrams Options.
Select the first branch so the vertexes are highlighted and right click, select Refit from the context menu.
The Refit can also be activated by selecting Dimensioning > Refit from the Home tab
4.7 Resize
In case the user would like to change the leave bore or branching bore on an existing shape, the Resize
command can be used. Using the same worked example, right click and select Resize
The user will be prompted to make the appropriate choices for the elements where there is more than one
sizing is available.
In the above example specification search was used. If specification search is not used, the list will not
contain any predefined values, and the rounding will not occur
The Resize command can also be activated by selecting Dimensioning > Resize from the Home tab
Resize can only be done at the start of a branch, at branching components such as tees and size-
changing components like reducers. All other components will obtain their size from upstream
components in order to keep the dimensional consistency of the data model depending on the
propagation settings
By using the Reverse Direction command, the direction of valves and fittings can be changed. Select the
valve or fitting so that the vertexes are highlighted, then right click and from the context menu select
Reverse Direction. The valve or fitting is flipped graphically and also in the Shape Data window the Arrive
and Leave points have swapped.
Reverse Direction only works on valves and fittings, which are Visio 2D shapes. In case the user wants
to reverse the direction of a tube segment, which is a Visio connector, the standard Visio Reverse Ends
command can be used. This command can be selected from the Orientation > Reverse Ends
command in the Shape context tab when a tube element is selected. An important difference between
these commands is that Reverse Ends changes the flow direction, while Reverse Direction does not
By using the Reverse Branch command, the direction of a branch and in-line components owned by the
branch can be reversed. Select any tube or in-line components of the branch that requires reversing then
right click and from the context menu select Reverse Branch. The tube components and associated flow
arrows will reverse their direction graphically and the components will be re-ordered in the Schematic
Explorer to show the changes.
Then after the reverse has been applied, the result is below:
Note that the bypass shown here is not affected by the reverse procedure as this is a separate branch,
this can be reversed independently if required
Inline parts can be defined as directional components. This means that the shape will be always
adjusted to flow of the branch. When such shape is inserted in tube, application will check if its
orientation is corresponding with main flow and automatically reverse direction of the component if
needed. Such shapes can be used i.e. to represent non-returning valves. For more information on
symbol creation please see the AVEVA Administration (TM-3534) Training Guide
If the branch being reversed contains an off page connector, the following message will be displayed:
Clicking Yes will reverse the branch on the page that the user is currently viewing in the same way as above.
The off page connector will be converted in the schematic explorer from its previous type, i.e. an incoming is
converted to an outgoing off page connector type or the other way round, however the symbol on the
drawing will not be affected. The connection to the branch on a separate sheet will be removed.
To complete the procedure, the previously connected line on the separate sheet should be reversed in the
same way and then the off page connectors should be re-connected. The symbols can be edited on the
canvas if require or deleted and a new off page connector symbol can be inserted.
4.10 SpecSearch
If the user wants to update the values of SCSTYP, SPREF or PSPEC attributes of a design element using
the questions and answers in the catalogue, then SpecSearch function will help to complete the missing
values using existing information.
Having selected an inline element, select Dimensioning > SpecSearch. The SpecSearch function will
dismiss any spec selection already made and re-do the spec search. This can be useful if there for instance
have been changes to the specification which would result in a different SPCO being chosen from the
catalogue. If some data on the item which was relevant to the selection of the specification reference has
changed, the selection mechanism can be triggered using SpecSeach function.

This paragraph provides information about Area shapes and how the user can apply them to a drawing
and Symbols. However please notice there is a detail explanation about how to create Area Shapes in
the AVEVA Diagrams (14.1) Administration (TM-3534) Training Guide.
An Area Shape can be used just as a visual frame or it could have connection to a database element. When
defined, data against the Area Shape is stored as a SCAREA element, which can be created below
SCGROU using the Define command from the toolbar or the right click context menu if the shape is not
defined automatically on drop.
Connection between the elements contained and the defined Area Shape is stored in SCAREF array
attribute. An item could be contained by more than one area; in this case SCAREF attribute will store the
area names in the order that the element was contained. All items referring to SCAREA via SCAREF
attribute can be seen in the Schematic Explorer tree as a secondary hierarchy.
When an Area Shape is placed or moved on the drawing canvas, any item inside its limits will automatically
inherit the default values for certain attributes determined by the area. Any attributes not applicable for a
particular type of element will be skipped. The user can set prefix for the attributes propagated and/or non-
propagated using Diagrams Options.
When an item is dragged out from the area its attributes controlled by the area are cleared and re-set to their
default values of the shape. In both cases, applicable message is added to the message log. In addition, if
the Area Shape is defined in database, SCAREF attribute of the element(s) dragged in/out is updated
accordingly.
The behaviour of the application, during the modification of an attribute which belongs to an item contained
and controlled within an Area Shape, can be determined by varying the Allow to modify attributes of
contained shapes option.
Ask user The user is warned that the attribute being changed is governed by the Area and asked if
they want to proceed
Always allow The change is always allowed without warning
Never allow The change is not allowed
Changes done directly to the database i.e., via Command Line, Attributes Utility form, customised PML
forms, etc. are not controlled by this setting
All differences between the attributes controlled by the Area Shape and corresponding values, also
inconsistencies related to the value of SCAREF attribute of contained shapes will be reported by the
Consistency Check utility
Update containing shapes command could be used from the right click
context menu of an Area Shape if the attribute values of the contained
shapes are different that corresponding ones in Area Shape itself.
For more detailed information on creating an Area Shape please see the
AVEVA Administration (TM-3534) Training Guide
For more detailed information on Auto Naming rules please see the AVEVA Administration (TM-
3534) Training Guide
For this section and the following section, we will use the Project Explorer (Schematic Project
Explorer) so user(s) need to be aware about this.
4.12.1 Autoname CE
The naming can be manually triggered by using the Autonaming rules via the Autonaming > Autoname CE
command from the Tools tab.
This function only works in case the element is not already named
The Autoname CE and Offspring function is the same as the Autoname CE, but it will also autoname any
unnamed offspring of the CE. The function is available via the Autonaming > Autoname CE and Offspring
command from the Tools tab.
The Autoname Offspring Only function is the same as the Autoname CE, but it will only autoname any
unnamed offspring of the CE. The function is available via the Autonaming > Autoname Offspring Only
command from the Tools tab.
Renaming can be used to autoname the current element using the current naming rules, after the old name
is automatically removed. The function is available via the Autonaming > Auto Rename CE command from
the Tools tab.
If user changes the name in schematic explorer, the name in the drawing will not change unless a
Refresh command is executed
This function works in the same way as Auto Rename CE, but it will also auto rename any offspring of CE.
The function is available via the Autonaming > Auto Rename CE and Offspring command from the Tools
tab.
This function works in the same way as Auto Rename CE, but it will only auto rename any offspring of CE.
The function is available via the Autonaming > Auto Rename Offspring Only command from the Tools tab.
This function works on the current selection in the diagram, and can rename
the elements with respect to their position in the diagram layout.
After selecting Auto Naming > Rename Elements from the Tools tab, the
Rename Elements form appears. Typically the user can select elements of a
certain type (i.e. valves, cables etc.) and rename them according to their
position, i.e. Horizontally, Vertically. Selected Order or Reversed Selected
Order.
The user can affect the comparison point and sorting option to regenerate or
re-order the names as shown below.
The user cannot name items that are in the same database with the same name. However, it is possible
for different types of databases to have items with the same name in the same MDB. i.e., between
DESI, SCHE and ENGI databases
Elements can be deleted by selecting them in the drafting canvas so the vertexes are highlighted and then
by pressing the delete key on the keyboard, the element is removed from the drafting canvas and removed
from the Schematic Explorer tree.
Selecting the element in the Schematic Explorer and right clicking will
also allow the user to delete elements.
Changes made will only be to the diagram until the SaveWork function is actuated
If elements are deleted from the Schematic Explorer when the owning diagram(s) are not
open then they will not be removed from the canvas, however they will no longer exist in
the DB and will be undefined when a Consistency Check is run. If elements are deleted
from the Schematic Explorer when the owning diagram(s) are open then the relevant
shapes will be deleted from the canvas automatically
The Define command will create a new database element that corresponds to a shape and link the shape to
that database element. In case an element with the same name already exists in the DB, the application will
issue an error message and create a new unnamed element. Define command can be reached via the
Home tab.
This function is also available on the right click context menu for the shapes in the drawing.
The Undefine command will break the link between the shape and the corresponding database element. The
database element will not be deleted.
When Undefine is performed, the attributes will be cleared using the same rules as when a shape is
copied
During the design of diagrams by dragging and dropping shapes from a stencil and connecting together in
the drawing, the Define operation will be handled automatically by the AVEVA Diagrams application. The
manual operation for Define / Undefine only has to be used in special situations. i.e. if a number of inline
fitting shapes are copied and pasted, they will not automatically be defined, so the user will have to first
select a current pipeline and then issue the Define command.
It is possible to disable the automatic Define mechanism by setting the Define shape on drop to False. This
is located in the Options > Diagram Options in System configuration via the Project tab.
AVEVA Diagrams 14.1 supports exchanging an existing symbol in the drawing which has been connected
and defined with another symbol. All attributes and connections will be retained. This can be done either
manually by the user or automatically by fetching a shape reference from the catalogue.
The reason that this function is called Replace Symbol rather than Replace Shape which would be the
standard MS Visio terminology is that it will replace the visual appearance of the shape, and apply the values
of that shape.
By selecting one or more shapes and using the Replace Symbol command on the right click context menu,
the symbol can be manually replaced. This will bring up a Replace Symbol form.
In the tree view to the left of the form, all open stencils are shown. In the right hand pane of the form all
shapes for the selected stencil can be seen. The user selects one of the symbols and then clicks the
Replace button to make the change.
In order for the stencils list to be seen on the left-hand pane in the Replace Symbol window, they must be
opened in the drawing
If the selected shape is not of the same type or has inappropriate connections, an error message will be
shown and the symbol will not be replaced
If the Apply button has been used for replace, the user can revert back to the previous symbol by
clicking Reset button
By using the Replace Symbol from Catalogue command available on the shape right click context menu,
the current symbol will be replaced with the one stored in the catalogue. This can be useful in the following
cases.
The item has received a new catalogue reference outside the control of the AVEVA Diagrams
application and the symbol has therefore not been updated accordingly.
The user has manually replaced a symbol and now wants to return to the symbol provided by the
catalogue.
The catalogue has been updated with new symbol references and the diagram should reflect this
change.
For more information on automatically replacing symbols please see the AVEVA Administration (TM-
3534) Training Guide
The Reference List window automatically lists the elements referenced by the CE. i.e., if the current element
is an Equipment element, then the pipes connected to any Nozzle belonging to that Equipment will be listed.
If an individual Nozzle is then selected, then the list will change to display the Pipe connected to that Nozzle.
The reference list can be viewed by selecting References from the View tab.
4.18 Hierarchy
From the Manage tab select Utilities > Hierarchy > Reverse Order. This
rearranges the elements below the current selection in reverse order. If
desired, this operation can be undone by immediately repeating the
command.
4.18.2 Reorder
The Reorder form lets the user rearrange the elements for an owning current selection element. To open the
Reorder form having selected an appropriate element from Schematic Explorer, select Utilities > Hierarchy
> Reorder from the Manage tab.
The form shows two lists of members of the current element. To move an
element to a different list position, in the left-hand list, select the element to
be moved. Then in the right-hand list, select an element adjacent to the
required list position. Set the Before/After option button to specify the exact
position relative to the selected member.
The user can change the settings for the explorer forms
in AVEVA Diagrams. To be able to do this the Explorer
Settings form can be viewed using Options >
Database Explorer Options command from the
Project tab.
When the element type string is turned off the Schematic Explorer it will be shown as below:
When the sorting is done, the visible text is taken into consideration. If the element type string is not shown,
the items will be ordered differently than where the element type string is shown; e.g. The element aaa will
be placed before the element zzz, where the :SCPUMP zzz will be placed before SCEQUI aaa.
The result of turning the element type string off and sorting all the elements which are below SCSEG level
will look like as shown with an arrow next to the sorting element level.
The available operators are Equals, Greater, Less, Not Equal, Greater and Equal, Less and Equal
Whilst Find is being processed the Select / Highlight or Zoom to options can be used.
Find The user can define the behaviour of Find action clicking
Zoom to
When active, the element found will be centred in the
drafting canvas.
History The History icon stores all the find queries made in the
current session. The History list can be cleared by
selecting History > Clear History
The Background colour in insert toolbar avails user to change the default background colour of a drawing to
user specified colour.
From Insert > Background, select Colour option. The Background colour change can be applied to All
pages of the opened drawing by selecting Apply to All Similar Pages, when template option is not selected.
To apply background colour change on selected drawing template use option, Apply to Current Template
only.
The background colour change functionality applies to drawing background only. This is for visual
change only and not available for background print.
1. Add Area Shape form to the drawing canvas, and check the
Schematic Explore:
2. Drag and drop a Centrifugal Pump from the Sample _Stencil on to the drawing canvas.
Rename the Pump to suitable name e.g. P100
3. Drag and drop the Pump P100 on to the Area Shape and check the Schematic Explorer.
4. Delete the Pump P-100 from the drawing canvas and the Schematic Explorer.
It is recommended that the user checks the diagrams after a reasonable amount of design. This is basically
to avoid bore size inconsistencies, connection errors and consistency between the drawing and the
database. In addition the user must check the schematic design before releasing items to 3D.
The Consistency Check command can be executed on a single shape, several shapes or on all shapes in a
drawing. This function will perform two kinds of checks on the selected items. It will check the consistency
between the drawing and the database as well as performing an engineering check.
The Consistency check command will be activated by default, the check boxes for the Consistency rules
will be checked by default when opening Diagrams for the first time
The Consistency check can be activated either from the Home tab via the Consistency Check button or by
right clicking and from the context menu selecting Consistency Check.
Or;
Once the Consistency Check has been activated the Consistency Check
Result window appears showing any inconsistencies. Inconsistencies are
classified as Errors, Warnings and Informational messages as indicated by the
status icon.
The picture below is just for illustration purposes and it shows the different
inconsistencies.
The messages are displayed after selecting the following options at Tools tab at the Consistency Rules,
Apply on Events options.
By clicking on each line in the Consistency Check Result form, the corresponding shape will be highlighted in
the drawing. In case the shape is not visible in the current view, the system will automatically pan and if
necessary zoom out to make the entire shape visible. The system will also attempt to bring back the drawing
to a consistent state against the database in case any inconsistencies have been detected. This normally
means that non existing database shapes will be disconnected or undefined in the drawing. No automatic
updates will be done to the database.
For example draw the following Pipe and run the Consistency check by right clicking and selecting from the
context menu Consistency Check.
In the Consistency Check Result form, right clicking will activate context menu. Using this menu,
the user can Hide, Unhide all inconsistencies or Export to text or Excel file (including Excel 2013
format).
application of the consistency rules can be altered via the Tools tab. It is possible to select which rule sets to
be applied when a consistency check is executed using the drop down list in the Execute Rules section.
Apply on Events function can be turned on and off using the first icon in Consistency Rules section. Based
on the settings in the individual rules and those set in the Diagrams Options, the consistency rules will be
applied whenever certain actions are carried out on the drawing itself or items on it.
The user can compare the changes made to a schematic element using the Highlight Changes command
from the right click context menu in the Schematic Explorer. For example see below the context menu for an
off-line instrument and a P&ID drawing.
Latest This option will automatically pick last two database sessions to compare
Choose Sessions will display dialogs for selection of a diagram element and two database
sessions and/or database stamps
Make sure the Keep session files option in the Diagrams Options is set to True so the files required
by the Highlight Changes are generated and kept for each database session, see the picture below.
Create SVG file on Save work, set to Always to be able to see all saved session files.
Once the right options are set select the Diagram from the Schematic Explorer and select Highlighting
Changes and Latest from the right click context menu.
On completion of the comparison process the Change highlighting in Diagram window is displayed as shown
below.
The context sensitive tab contains icons and controls for performing various tasks.
Clicking this icon will display the Select Diagram and Sessions to
compare dialogue for starting a new comparison.
Refresh This will redo the comparison, and update the results. It is mainly
useful when the comparison is made using the Latest option.
New Elements If there are new elements present in the target version, they will be
highlighted using the New Items Added colour setting, on clicking
this option.
Deleted Elements If there are elements that exist in base version, but deleted in target
version, they will be highlighted using the Items Deleted colour
setting, on clicking this option.
Modified Elements Elements whose attribute values differ between the target and base
sessions, are highlighted using Items Modified colour setting, on
clicking this option.
Zoom to Fit Fits the diagram to viewer window, maintains aspect ratio.
Auto Zoom When this option is selected, selecting an element in the Schematic
Explorer or comparison result grid, will zoom the diagram to display
that element automatically.
User Settings / Default Settings Unless a user specific or project specific mapping has been saved
using Attribute Configuration dialogue, Default Settings which is
supplied with the application will be the only option available.
Attributes
After changing the mappings, the user needs to click the Refresh button to redo the comparison
using modified mappings
Highlight Colours Clicking this icon will display the Highlight Colour Configuration
dialogue shown below. Clicking in the Colour column in any of the
rows will display the Colour Selector dialogue. Selected colour will
be used for highlighting respective elements on the diagram.
Highlight Tubing This option will enable the highlight of the changes to the tubing
items where applicable.
When the user selects an item from the Diagram Viewer this will be automatically selected in the grid
viewer provided that the clicked item is listed in the grid view
The Item List contains lists of the items on the current page of the diagram drawing. These are arranged on
different tabs according to their type. The Item List can be shown by using the Item List from the View tab.
The Item List is synchronized with the drawing, so that any items added to the current drawing page or
removed from the page will be immediately reflected in the Item List.
The picture below corresponds to the Item List for the sample drawing A0-01-2012-0002.
When drawings with many items are being worked on, the automatic synchronization between the
drawing and the Item List might lead to a noticeable delay in some situations, depending on the
computer performance rating. In case this happens, the automatic updating can be turned off by setting
the System configuration > Item List > Automatic updating default setting in Diagrams Options to
False. Then the Item List can be refreshed manually by using the Refresh Item List command on the
right click context menu
The Item List features a right click context menu that contains the same item specific commands as in the
Schematic Explorer as well as some presentation options such as Export List to Spreadsheet in Excel,
Show group panel, Show Filter Row, etc.
The Status Control allows the user to control and report on the status of individual elements as they progress
through their lifecycles. It can be applied to any model objects, e.g. schematic components, equipment,
drawings, etc. It can be expressed in a variety of ways, i.e. Approved for Construction, 80% Complete, Work
Started, etc.
The desired project configuration is created by administrators as Status Definitions in Lexicon module (from
AVEVA Administration product). It is applied to model objects by end users in any of the constructor modules
using the Status Controller.
The Status Control data model defines a workflow as a status definition owning a set of Status Values.
Individual model objects reference the status value via a status link object as shown below. The status link
objects are distributed globally with the model objects they refer to. They are not visible to the end user, but
the status data is available as pseudo attributes.

From the Manage tab select Status Controller, the Status Controller form is displayed. From the Status
layout Pull down list select New Layout
The user will be prompted to set the scope for the items to be
displayed in the selected status profile. If required, a selection could
be made via the Reference Browser using the Add button.
The Default Status Profile form will be displayed showing all the elements according to the controllable
element types set in Dictionary Database. The scope could be set at any time using the Set Layout Scope
icon on the toolbar.

right click and select Edit Status from the context menu. The Status form is displayed, from the Status
section of the form use the pull down list to select the next status transition i.e. Work Complete and then click
the Apply button.
Once the initial status value has been set the Promote and Demote commands are available either from the
right click context menu or the Promote and Demote icons. This allows the element to promoted or demoted
in the sequence of the valid transactions (one sequence at a time).
If the Edit Status is used, more than one valid transaction may be selected
If the status is removed from the element, this will reset the element back to its original state i.e. Not
Controlled, the Remove Status command is available either from the right click context menu or the
Remove Status icon.
The Status History shows a full history of the element / elements as they have been promoted and demoted
through their life cycle. The Status history form displays Session, Date, User, Element, Event, Status
Definition, Status Value and Comment fields. The Status History command is available either from the right
click context menu or the Status History icon.
If the user right clicks on the Status History grid a context sensitive menu will appear, this allows the user to;
Refresh This will refresh the Status History list to show any updates since the form
was original opened.
Export to Excel This allows the user to export the Status History list to Excel.
Print Preview This allows the user to see a print preview prior to printing.
The Statistical Reports allows the users to see a graphical representation of an element or a number of
elements. Highlight the element(s) from the Default Status Profile grid then either from the select Statistical
Report from right click context menu or click the Statistical Reports icon.
The graphical representation of the report can be changed by right clicking on the Statistical Report, a
context sensitive menu will appear, select Chart Type > Bar Chart. The Graphical representation of the
report is changed to the newly selected chart type.
Chart Legend This allows the user to move the chart legend in the graphical report either to Left, Right,
Top and Bottom or turn it off.
The following graphical representation styles are available for statistical reports.
Once the graphical report has been generated, there are some additional features available. If the user
selects the portion of the report and then right clicks, a context menu appears, which allows the user to;
List Elements This displays a list of elements from the graphical report that are at this
status value
Add To My Data This will add the elements at this status value to the My Data form as a new
collection
Add To 3D View This will add the elements at this status value to the graphical 3D view in
AVEVA Plant Design or AVEVA Marine Outfitting modules
Edit Status This allows the user to edit the status of the elements at this status value to
either promote of demote the status
Status History This will display the Status History form
Saving a layout allows the user to save the current layout and then activate this if required from the Status
Layout pull down menu. Click the Save Status Layout icon, the Save Layout As form appears, enter
Diagram_Status and click the OK button. The saved Status Layout is now visible in the Status Layout pull
down menu.
To support the workflow between the diagram Draftsmen and the 3D model designer, AVEVA Diagrams
includes some functions to manage the release of information to 3D. These are as follows:
AVEVA Diagrams supports a release status that can be set or re-set through the application and acts as a
flag to the 3D designers to indicate that the diagram data is now complete and approved and can be used as
a base for 3D modelling.
The release status can be set on database items in a flexible way, among these is to set the release status
for all items in a diagram. However, the diagram document as such does not have a release status and will
not be managed in this way.
The release status is represented by the RESTAT attribute in the database. A value of 1 means that the item
is released and a value of 0 means that it is not released.
The diagram documents are made available to 3D design users as SVG files. Each time a diagram
document is saved, a corresponding SVG file is created in addition to the Visio file depending on the
Diagrams Options. This can then be used for viewing the diagram without the need for having MS Visio
installed. The SVG file name can be found by querying the NVIEWF pseudo attribute on the SCDIAG
element.
The save work behaviour can be changed via Create SVG on Save Work setting in Diagrams Options.
Create SVG on Save Work set to ‘Always’: Each time that Save Work is
executed SVG files are generated
for every page of the diagram. It
doesn’t matter whether the diagram
has elements released to 3D or
not.
Create SVG on Save Work set to ‘For data released to 3D only’: Each time Save Work is executed
SVG files are generated for each
page of the diagram that contains
data released to 3D. For every
page that does not contain
released to 3D data a “dummy”
SVG file is being created. “Dummy”
file is just an empty file with some
basic parameters so the diagram
data is possible to load to the
AVEVA Schematic 3D Integrator
without errors.
Create SVG on Save Work set to ‘Never’: SVG files are never created when
save work is executed. However if
the diagram contains released to
3D data a warning message is
displayed in the message log.
Once items within a drawing have been released to 3D each time the Save Work command is initiated
an SVG file will be automatically created, this can lead to slower saving times
Setting the release status can be done in a number of flexible ways, i.e. by right clicking on items in the
Schematic Explorer or using the shape right click context menu. Also, the user can set the release status by
selecting one or more objects in the drawing and using the Release command.
From the Home tab click Release command; the Set Release Status (Diagram Context) form appears. Tick
the boxes for which elements are to be released, enter a comment and then click the Set Status button.
In this particular example, Pumps P1502 A and B from Diagram A0-01-2012-0001, are selected from the list
By right clicking on the drawing background then selecting Set Release Status from the right click
context menu will view all items on all pages in the current drawing.
To release a diagram page by page, the Release Diagram to 3D command via the Project tab can be
used. On extract databases the Flush Extract checkbox will become available
If the Set Release Status form is activated again, the elements will display a released date, user, etc.
The user can place a comment only for the items which are changed in the same release process by
using the Apply comment only for changed elements checkbox.
Open the diagram which the elements are to be released, then select Release > Visualize Release and
Link to 3D Status from the Home tab. The items that are released in the current drawing page will be
highlighted or selected.
Once the visualisations complete the user can reset the highlight by clicking the
Reset Highlight icon from the title bar.
Finally, if the user tries to change an element that has been released, a 3D model release warning form
appears. If the user clicks OK, the modification will be applied to the item and the release status will be reset.
If the user wants to release the item to 3D again, they will have to use the Set Release Status function
again. If the Cancel button is clicked, no changes will be done.
A selection of diagrams can be checked and printed in one operation by using the Batch Job command from
the Tools tab; To the left, the contents of the database can be navigated using the Database tree tab and
searched using the Search tab. The only difference between this and a general browser are that it contains
checkboxes for multiple selections in the tree view. In the Search tab view, multiple diagrams may be
selected by using standard windows controls for selecting objects i.e. Shift + Click and Ctrl + Click.
The * symbol can be used in the Search function to return all the drawings available
Items can be added to the selection in the right side of the dialogue by ticking the diagrams’ checkbox in the
Database tree and then click the Add button. The diagram can be removed from the selection section by
clicking the Remove button.
The selected diagrams can then be checked against consistency and printed by using the Consistency
Check and Print button at the bottom of the dialogue.
It is also possible to execute Publish to AVEVA NET, Export to PDF, Export to DWG and Export to DGN
for multiple diagrams functions from this form. The most recent or saved settings will be used for each
operation
By clicking the Consistency Check button, the Batch Consistency Check form will appear and will perform a
consistency check on the previously selected diagrams.
The result summary for each diagram is reported in the Errors, Warnings and Informational columns on the
Batch Consistency Check form. The progress for each diagram can be seen in the progress bar.
By using the Stop button, the consistency check function can be cancelled at any time
In case the user wants to investigate further any of the issues found in a diagram when the consistency
check was done, it is possible to select the diagram from the available list and click the Open Diagram
button. The diagram will then be opened in the background, and after the dialogue is closed, the
Consistency Check function can be used to create a detailed report of the issues with that diagram.
By clicking the Print button on the batch job form, a print dialogue form will be shown. Change the settings to
suit the diagram being printed and click the OK button. All pages of all selected diagrams will be printed on
the selected printer.
1. Open the Diagrams A0-01-2012-0002 from the Train Project: Make a change by adding new By-
Pass Branch and Globe Valve to the Pipeline 80-A-11-A1
2. Highlight the changes and compare between the last two database sessions.
For database items that are connected to an AVEVA engineering or an instrumentation item, it is possible to
view the connected elements’ datasheet. For this option to be enabled, the schematic database item must
be linked to the engineering or instrumentation item which has an existing datasheet. Below are a variety of
places where the user can view datasheets.
The Datasheet below will open for pump P1502 A from Diagram A0-01-2012-0001
The Datasheet below will open for pump P1502A from Diagram A001-01-2012-0001
The AVEVA Diagrams schematic database stores a large amount of 2D schematic information about each
diagram. The user can examine this data both graphically, in the form of drawings, or in text form, by
producing reports. This chapter describes the principles and practice of producing reports for the AVEVA
Diagrams application.
The user can produce a report by using the Visio report application or running a report template (Reports) or
one based on their own selection criteria (Quick Reports) from within the AVEVA Diagrams module.
The user can launch the Report Designer by selecting the Reports > Reports > Designer command from
the Tools tab. This will display the Report Designer with a new report. The user can use the data facilities to
produce new outputs or can use the existing templates. It is also possible to view previously saved reports.
For more information about the Report Designer please see the Reporting user
guide in User Documentation.
The user can generate a report of attributes from the data entered into Shape Data. The user can generate
an inventory report from the data stored with Pipelines and Equipment shapes in a general arrangement
layout.
All of the information needed to generate a report is saved in a report definition. A report definition
determines which shapes and attributes are included in the report and how the report is formatted. The user
can generate the Visio Reports by selecting Reports > Visio Reports command from the Tools tab and
browsing the existing report definition.
When the Reports form appears, navigate to the Browse button or select the required report already in the
window. After getting the required report, click Run
The Browse function will look for the report definitions saved in the *vrd format
For more information about creating a visio report in Diagrams see AVEVA Administration (TM-3534)
Training Guide
When user clicks the Run button, the Run Report window appear and user gets to choose the report types.
They can be in Excel, HTML, Visio Shape or XML. Click the Visio Shape and the report will appear in the
drawings.
The report shape can be edited in Microsoft Excel using the right click context menu a shown.
When saving a report as a Visio shape in the drawing, select Copy of report definition to save the report
with the drawing, or select Link to report definition to keep the report where it is and link the drawing to
it. If it is planned to share the drawing with other users, select Copy of report definition so that others
can see the report
The .vrd file is saved and can be opened for modification via a text editor
For more information on creating Visio report templates please see the AVEVA Administration (TM-
3534) Training Guide
The user will see a Windows File Browser, navigate to the location of
the report templates, select the report template and click the Open
button.
This standard report template used in this example is configured to only display information from the
(SCHEMATICS-PIPING-AREA01) Schematic Group.
The Create Quick Report form is displayed when the user selects Reports > Quick Reports command from
the Tools tab. This form allows the user to create reports with only basic formatting and this template cannot
be saved.
The user can enter a filename for the output of the report. To see the report on the screen, leave the File
textbox blank, or check the Screen checkbox, in which case any filename given will be ignored. If Screen
checkbox is checked, a command window will be displayed to show the results of the report, unless there is
already a form currently displayed to which the results may be written to.
Types AVEVA Diagrams element types can be specified. i.e., SCEQUI, SCCAB, SCTUB etc.
With This option is a way of narrowing down the report. Enter a PML expression i.e. Purpose EQ
‘TANK’
Columns These are the AVEVA Diagrams attributes to be output in the report. The attributes the user
specifies will be used as headings to the column. The user can enter expressions, enclosed
in round brackets. i.e., for the name, description and the first three characters of the owner's
purpose enter name desc (substr (purp of owner, 1, 3))
Hierarchy Enter the element or elements at the top of the hierarchy that user wants to report on.
Because the user can give a list of elements, they must enter the slash character before
each name, except for WORLD. i.e. /Training
Once the Create a Quick Report form has been populated with the required information, click the Run button
when ready to generate the report.
Change Specification functionality can be used to change the specifications of Line Components or update
and modify the values of design element specifications like SCSTYP, SPREF, Bore, and Insulation Spec
Tracing Spec and export these changes to Excel sheet.
Change Specification function will help to achieve these modifications.
Selecting inline element and then selecting the Dimensioning > Change Specification , the Change
Specification function will dismiss any spec selection already made and re-do the SpecSearch. This can
be useful if there were any changes for specification which would result in different SPCO being chosen
from the catalogue. If some data on the item which was relevant to the selection of the specification
reference has changed.
The selection mechanism can be generated by using the Change Specification Function.
Whenever the user needs to change the design element or inline component specification, the user can do
this by selecting from the Home Windows in Diagrams;
From the Home tab, select a pipeline from the schematic explorer then select:
1- Component List
The Component List tab on the Change Specification window displays the following:
BORE1 Displays the bore at the p-point where the flow enters the component
BORE2 Displays the bore at the p-point where the flow leaves the component
BORE3 Displays the bore at any of the p-point regardless of the flow direction for
Example if the user have T connected to a pipe, Bore3 will be the third point
New Spec Component Displays the new specification of the new component
2- Error Messages
3- Highlighting tab :
Also there is : Total Items and Tick Box to select and Apply changes to like components.
Apply changes to like components checkbox- checking applies one component change to all like
instances in the Component List.
Apply and Undo: Apply to confirm the changes and Undo to cancel the changes.
1- Right click one or more component then select the Modify Specification button:
To change the spec the user can check the box to change out of spec components.

6.5.1 Introduction
The Revision Control Mechanism works on the standard Status definitions. It is a version control feature which
allows user to create a working revision, which can be later promoted to Issued (read-only) state. The Status
Control Definition changes will trigger creation of diagram revisions, this process could be repeated resulting
in multiple Issued Revisions of a drawing.
To enable Revision Control functionality in Diagrams user has to set proper Revision Configuration element
(REVCON) in the Diagrams Options.
The REVCON element and Status Control Definition valid for SCDIAG elements should be created in
the Lexicon beforehand. For more information about the Revision Configuration Element please refer to
the Revision Configuration topic in the LEXICON User guide
Click the Project tab and select the Options from the displayed list.
Click the Diagrams Options from the available list to display the ‘Diagrams Options’ dialog
Select the Revision Handling Options Category as highlighted. This option allows user to choose Revision
Configuration Element to be used in Diagrams.
Choose Revision Configuration Element to be used in Diagrams by selecting the browse button as shown:
The Revision Mark Shape is a specific “Label” shape. It displays number of a revision at which the connected
shape was modified for the last time. Revision Mark Shape can be sensitive to changes of Database Attributes
of the connected shape, graphical changes of this shape, or both.
Revision Mark Shapes can be setup in “Diagrams Options” via “Revision handling options” to detect
changes of Database attributes of connected shape, graphical changes of this shape, or both.
To do this, the following Revision Mark fields in Revision handling options must be completed.
Revision Marks on drawing changes: set to “True”.
Revision Marks Attributes: Select preferred Element Types database attributes in this example “Description”
and “Name” from Select Attribute dialog
Stencil field: Select the Stencil that contains the appropriate Revision Mark Shapes. In this example select
‘/Sample_Annotation_Symbols’ from the Select database element dialog.
All Revision Mark Shapes are created on separate layer named “Revision Marks”, allowing easy
visibility toggle
Revision mark shape field: Enter the Name of the shape representing the Revision Mark, in this case
‘Sample_Revision_Mark’.
Then Click the OK button in the Diagrams Option dialog to save the settings. Select Yes to save changes of
Diagrams Defaults.
When the status of a diagram is being changed to values specified in Revision Configuration Element the
Working or Issued revision of this diagram is created. The working revision allows user to modify and save the
Diagram, where the Issued revision is a read-only copy located in separate directory
(ProjectDir/PRJdflts/Data/Diagrams/Revisions). Each diagram can have a number of issued revisions at
any given time, but only one working revision.
The drawing “SCDIAG element” [e.g. A0-01-2012-001] can be promoted, i.e. move to the next stage of
progress (Work Complete) from the Promote option accessed via the context menu of SCDIAG element.
The menu can also be accessed from the Diagrams group of the Manage tab.
Or
Select the context menu of SCDIAG element [e.g. A0-01-2012-001] in Schematic Explorer and click the Edit
Status icon will display the status form.
Select the appropriate Status Value [e.g. from Work Started to Work Complete] and click the Apply button
The diagram can be further promoted, by selecting the appropriate Status Value (For Check) to ‘Checked’
status and click the Apply button.
When the status state configured to Approved [75] (No Change) the Drawings is reached, the user can then
select appropriate Revision radio button e.g. “Major” accordingly to the Revision Number Definition being
used to display the corresponding Revision Number (e.g. A). The selection of Major/Minor will be based on
company/project procedures.
When the OK button is selected a pop-up form will alert the user that a save work will be performed
After the issued diagrams items in this case SCDIAG element [A0-01-2012-001] is created. Working
revision of the same drawing is automatically created.
The Revision block on the diagram is then updated to reflect this most recent of revisions.
The automatic creation of working revision after issued diagram item is created usually occurs if the option is
set to “True” in the Revision handling options as shown.
It is possible to open previous revisions of a particular diagram using “Open Revision” menu present in both
context menu of SCDIAG element and Diagrams group of the Manage tab.
The Revision Mark Shapes could be manually dropped on the drawing and connected to drawing elements,
but also there is a possibility to use them in automated manner.
There is a dedicated menu button “Insert Revision Marks” available on the Insert Tab. It allows user to insert
Revision Marks on modified shapes on current page, on all pages in current document or only on the
selected shapes. Revision Marks will be drawn only on shapes changed in current working revision.
The selected “Element Type” and “Attributes” must be specified in the Diagrams Revision Mark Shapes
Configuration. Refer to section 10.2 .1 for more details.
Select the “Insert Revision Marks on Page” menu from the Illustration group of the Insert tab.
The Revision Mark Shape can be inserted on All Pages, “On Selection” item, by selecting the desired option
from the “Insert Revision Marks on Page” menu. This menu contains also two option to remove existing
Revision Marks in document. One will delete every revision mark, and the other will delete only revision
marks connected to elements modified in older than current revision
All Revision Mark Shapes are created on separate layer named “Revision Marks”, allowing easy
visibility toggle
It is possible to export and print revisions using Batch Job functionality accessible via the Tool tab from the
main toolbar.
The “Revisions” tab available in the Batch Job dialog, display database tree for Revision (REVISS)
elements. Every revision item is displayed as a child of the related Diagram.
Select the preferred Diagram Revisions (e.g. A0-01-2012-0002 Revision A01) checkbox and click the Add
button to move the selected item to the Selection panel of Batch Job dialog.
The buttons “Export to PDF” and “Print” are enabled only when selected revisions are available in the
“Selection” panel of Batch Job dialog.
Select “Export to PDF” and “Print” to either print the document or export to pdf. The exported copy will be
saved automatically in this location:
C:\AVEVA\Projects\Training\tradia
There is also the possibility to select revisions of diagrams using two other tabs. When the Database Tree or
Search tab is active there is a drop down menu available on the “Add” button, allowing adding revisions of

Cables can be connected to Valves, Instruments, Equipment, Sub Equipment, Offline instruments, inline
components and HVAC fitting. Some components have connection points dedicated to the electrical
connections while some equipment have separate connection point types for power receivers and suppliers.
X referring to the connection point number, to make the name unique in scope of shape.
For example when connecting cable with valve, the cable ENDREF is set to the valve in receiver connection
case and the cable STAREF is set to the valve in supplier connection case.
Whenever the user(s) want to create diagrams for connection cable, they have to get access to the
Diagrams: Start > All Programs > AVEVA > Engineer > AVEVA Diagrams 14.1.1
A default Diagrams screen layout will be displayed: user(s) has to have their project or previous project:
In this case the project called Training
To create new Diagrams see AVEVA Diagrams 14.1.1 Administration guide (TM-3534)
To connect a valve to a cable this can be done in this way; dragging the appropriate shape for the valve
from the stencil.
Select the cable then click the end of the cable, hold then move the point to the valve’s connection point.
There will be two possibilities for this action either the valve and the cable will not be connected and the
drawing will be like this:
For using the connection cable functionality user should change the diagrams mode to cable mode.
For Creating an equipment or sub equipment which it’s not available in the Stencil see AVEVA
Diagrams 14.1 Administration Guide 3534.
Then user will have this message from the Message Log within the Reference group from the View tab.
That’s mean that the valve connection point is pipe connections not cable connections and the user need to
change or add cable connection point Inward and Outward.
Or the connection will be done for a valid connection point when the valve has appropriate Inward or and
Outward connection points.
In this case the “cable in” point connected to the valve inward successfully and applications settled the
STAREF of the cable and its reference to the valve.
That’s mean STAREF is pointing to the wrong connection point or wrong component, application assumes
that user is trying to connect ENDREF to the wrong place and message below will be displayed from the
Message Log:
The same thing will be happened if connecting cable to “cable out” point of element other than equipment
item (such as offline instrument).
If the application assumed that ENDREF is expected to connect and that’s not happened the application
assume that the user tries to connect STAREF instead which not acceptable. Then the message will be
displayed to inform the user that action not matching the connection point type.
Cable connection to non – equipment items as well are possible to be set when Diagrams set to the
Cable mode
The Edit Connection Points function can be used to allow the user to modify functionality of connection
points of a shape or element being imported or edited from the stencil.
To get access to this function user need to click Admin tab, then click the Import Shape or Edit Master
buttons within the Shapes group.
By clicking the Edit Connection Points link or extension then dialogue box will be displayed:
This dialogue window contains an image of the Imported/edited shape and the connection points of that
shape.
These connection points were coloured in blue and when the user selected one of these points it will be
collard by red.
In case there was more one shape being imported the user still able to navigate to the next or previse shape
by using the previous or the next button below the image.
User can modify or change and add new connection point by pointing on the shape image and right hand
click the mouse then new window will be displayed to modify the shape:
Select the connection point with mouse button and from the dialogue box select the suitable function for that
point which is either one of these choices:
Undefined – connection point not considered as cable in, cable out connection and not pipe connection as
well. However they can be used when connecting actuators to different items or connection of equipment it’s
with cable elements, electrical connection and nozzles.
Pipe connection – connection points to connect inline components of a pipe line, HVAC line or instrument
line with tubes and ducts or directory to other inline components. This connection points are called in shape
sheet as Connections. Pipe, where X is connection number.
Cable in – connection point to connect the cable elements to non-equipment items (such as valves fittings,
HVAC fittings, inline instruments and offline instruments. that are supposed to be power receivers. This
mean that the ENDREF attribute of the cable will be set to the item.
In shape sheet this connection points called Connections. CABLEIN_X. where X is value set in connection
number field.
Cable out – connection point to connect the cable elements to non-equipment items that are supposed to
be power suppliers. This means that STAREF attribute of the cable will be set to the items. In shape sheet
these connection points named as Connection. CABLEOUT_X, where X is value set in connection number
field.
Connection number – connection number means the piping connections.
ARRIVE and LEAVE attributes of inline components are set to number for
connections with elements below the same segment.
Then select the connection point number, the connection point type and OK:
By clicking OK button the change and will be remembered and the dialogue window will
be closed.
To generate the electrical drawing for that Diagram, user should change the P&ID mode to the Cable
mode:
B. By copying the shape to Microsoft Visio TM, open the shape sheet and set appropriate names to
desired connection points.
Select Home Page then user should select Diagram icon from the tool bar:
New window will be displayed to ask the user to select Project Templates and drawing name then select Save:

D. Adjust the centre (origin), offset position and the scale of the imported Intelligent
Background: Click the Action button in the Diagrams tool bar then click the View Properties
/highlight View from the Intelligent Background button:
This functionality allows the user to assign database items to shapes or symbols that do not exist on any
diagram. These items are referred as Unassigned items.
The name of the equipment, in this particular case, can be changed for example to P200A and its attributes
can be defined by the user and without inserting it yet in a diagram.
Then a symbol can be inserted and assigned to the unassigned equipment in the schematic database using
the following procedure:
Drag and drop the Visio symbol from the stencil to the
drawing area
This will be result after the procedure and after dropping the symbol from the stencil.
The Visio shape is assigned to the existing database element only when the master shape is of
the same type as the database element, for example SCEQUIPMENT db element corresponding
to an Equipment shape and when the selected database element does not exist on any drawing
yet.
There are three types of elements that can be dropped onto a drawing;
None inline elements that can exist alone on a drawing (like Equipment, Sub-equipment, Actuators,
Offline elements, Area etc.).
Nozzles and Electrical Connections. It is only possible to drop electrical connections and nozzles
symbols if they are dropped on the shapes of the owning elements, for example a nozzle can only be
dropped on an Equipment shape.
Inline elements. It is being possible to drop inline symbols and build segments. To achieve this user will
have to drop parts of segment one by one from the stencil and connect them on drawing by dropping
them on proper parts.
For example, the user can create a nozzle by selecting the previous pump
and typing new scnoz in the Command Line. The nozzle now exists in the
database
but cannot be inserted alone into the drawing by the - Hold down the Shift key-
procedure described above. It can be inserted and assigned using the procedure
but only if it is inserted it close to the pump (the owning element).
On the other hand, it is possible to select and drag an element representing the
database object from the Project Explorer (or Flexible Explorer) and drop it into a
drawing area. A new shape will be created and it will be linked to the proper
database element.
This is very similar to dropping elements from a stencil. However, during dragging from the Explorer the user
will not see the symbol. This is because the symbol is determined after the drop action.
Manual Selection
Selectors can be configured from Project tab > Options > Diagrams Options
The Selector Order (which one applies first) can be configured at Option > Order icon and for
the Settings rules it is possible to modify the values directly in the Settings Window or manage
them via the Manage dialog. The user can either click the Manage button or right-click the
Unassigned Items node.
Each element type can have many “rule based” settings and one “default value” that will be used in case if
element will not match any rule. For example, when equipment attribute Description is set to Centrifugal
Pump then ‘Centrifugal Pump’ shape from ‘Sample_Equipment_Symbols_2’ will be used.
For example the user can create a new equipment by using the Command Line
and typing new scequi and setting the Description attribute to Centrifugal
pump.
The new equipment will appear in the Project Explorer under the Unassigned Items. Then the user can drag
and drop it from the Project Explorer.
The result is displayed below, the symbol is inserted as per the example configuration described above.
1- Use the Command Line and type new scequi, this equipment will be an unassigned item since it
will exist in the schematic database but not as a symbol in a drawing.
2- Name the equipment e.g. P900A, and its attributes can be defined and without inserting it yet in a
diagram.
3- Insert a suitable symbol from the Stencil and assigned it to the P900A in the schematic database
by:
D. Right click the W999 from the Schematic Explorer and select Attributes from the right
click context and then change the Description field from unset to Winch
E. Drag and drop the equipment W999 from the Project Explorer on to the drawing canvas:
7.1 Overview
The Schematic Model Viewer allows the users to view the contents of the schematic model database
independently of the diagram layouts. It provides a continuous navigable view of equipment items and the
interconnecting piping networks, independently of which system they belong to or which P&ID they have
been drafted on.
The Schematic Model Viewer is implemented as a Common Application Framework (CAF) Add-In, meaning
that it can be hosted by different applications. The viewer will also require access to a SCHE DB as part of
the current MDB.
To start the viewer, the user will have to select an equipment item. This item will be placed at the centre of
the generated view and the system will automatically find all connections in the database and display each
connection as a graphical sub tree. Each sub tree is traversed through all branches until other equipment
items or branch ends are encountered. Branching points (such as Tees, Olets or 3-way valves) are
represented by a generic branching point symbol. The initially generated view will not extend beyond the
equipment items encountered at the end of the branches, but it is possible for the user to manually expand
and continue exploring along the schematic network. Equipment items are displayed using different icons,
selected by a set of customer definable rules.
The Schematic Model viewer can be started in different ways, depending on the possibilities of the hosting
application. The user can click the New Schematic Model View icon in the Schematic Model Viewer
toolbar, select an equipment item in the Schematic Explorer or select an equipment item in the Diagram
Drafting canvas, right click and from the context menu select the Create Model View command.
For this example the New Schematic Model View icon is clicked from the Equipment Tab, the Select
Equipment form appears. Using the Database tree navigate to the schematic equipment element and click
OK button.
or
The Creating Schematic Model View
progress form appears.
Once creating the Schematic Model View is complete, the schematic model
view will be opened in its own drafting canvas.
The automatically generated layout can be re-arranged by the user, simply by dragging the icons
around
For more information about the icon modification see the AVEVA Diagrams14.1 Schematic Model
Manager( Administration) guide (TM-3542)
From the Schematic Model View drafting canvas select the schematic equipment element to be centred on
so that the vertexes are highlighted. Now from the Schematic Model Viewer toolbar click the Centre icon.
or
The view will be re-arranged to position the selected item in the centre.
Expand
By selecting an item and using the Expand command (available in the toolbar and
in the right click context menu), all connections to that item will be traversed and
expanded. This will generate a new schematic view.
Collapse
Items that have previously been expanded can also be collapsed, restoring the
previous state.
In n case the view will become too cluttered when viewing inline fittings, it can either be manually re-
arranged or the layout settings can be changed
Where the connector between the equipment items is reversible there will be
additional commands in the right click context menu so that the user can reverse the
source or destination link
Attributes can be displayed by right clicking on an item and selecting Show Attributes from the context
menu. The Shape Data form is displayed showing all the attributes.
7.5 Settings
By clicking the Settings icon from the Schematic Model Viewer toolbar, the Settings form will be shown. It
contains the following settings and options, of which could be saved to %
EXE%\SchematicModelSettings.xml using Save to defaults button.
Follow CE When this checkbox is checked, selecting items in the view will also
change CE (Current Element) to the current item accordingly.
Layout after hide When checked, the connection map will be redrawn each time the
user hides some connections' lines, elements or execute a
collapse.
Show connector text Determines whether the connector's lines should display describing
text.
Show inline This is the same as the Show Inline Items icon on the toolbar.
Show Arrow Shows the flow direction using arrows. The user can determine size
of arrows using drop down list.
Highlight color Clicking the browse button, this will display a colour palette to be
chosen for highlighted items.
For more information about the icon modification see the AVEVA Diagrams14.1 Schematic Model
Manager( Administration) guide (TM-3542) and AVEVA Diagrams 14.1 Administration guide (TM-3534)
As AVEVA Diagrams is based on Microsoft Visio, PinX and PinY attributes of Visio shapes could be used to
identify the location of the items on a drawing canvas.
The grid definition is stored in an xml file in %Diagrams % folder: C:\AVEVA\AVEVA Diagrams
with the griddef.xml name. This file defines the spacing and the boundaries of an imaginary grid.
Using the attributes explained above, the user can produce annotation which could refer to a target element
and show its location.
For the example the following syntax can be used between connected OPC elements, but the grid should be
configured so the text reports the desirable positions.
Auto Formatting Rules allows the user to enable the attributes of an item to control the format and
presentation of the item on the diagram.
The application of these rules are carried out using the Formatting Rules option in the Execute Rules
section of the Tools tab.
The drop down list can be used to specify the rule set(s) that should be applied. Then clicking the Apply
rules icon will apply the formatting changes to the drawing.
Apply on Events function can be turned on and off using the first icon in Formatting Rules section. Based
on the settings in the individual rules and those set in the Diagrams Options, the auto formatting rules will be
applied whenever certain actions are carried out on the drawing itself or items on it.
The Zoom to function can be turned on and off using the next icon, if this is turned on before the rule is
applied; then the screen will adjust to show all the items that have had their formatting changed on the
current drawing page.
Undo Formatting icon will undo any formatting that has been applied using the rules and return the drawing
and all items on it back to its original formatting.
AVEVA Diagrams relies on the standard Visio function Insert CAD Drawing for the background drawings.
Click the OK button , then user will have CAD Drawing for the background drawings.
It is recommended that the AutoCAD drawing should be inserted onto a new Background canvas and
then made visible through the Options > Page Setup form using the Page Properties tab via the
Project tab
By using the Catalogue Search function, it is possible to search through the catalogue and to assign
catalogue references to the selected item(s) provided that the Diagrams Options allow this. If the user is to
add catalogue references for pipeline elements then the Use Specification option must be set to False
To activate the Catalogue Search select Catalogue Search in View tab; the Catalogue Search form is
displayed.
The Catalogue Search window is divided in two main parts. To the left is a pane that contains two tabs,
Catalogue Explorer and Selection Tables, to the right there is a search result list. If a shape that is selected
in the drafting canvas has a SPREF pointing to a GPART or a TABITEM the catalogue search window will
automatically navigate to the currently used catalogue item and switch to the relevant tab.
On slow computers this can cause a slight delay when shapes are selected. If this is the case, this
behaviour can be turned off by setting the Tools > Diagrams Options > General options > Catalogue
search settings > Configuration > Auto navigate to catalogue element setting in Diagrams Options
to False
By selecting the Catalogue Explorer tab, the user can navigate through
the GPART hierarchy of the catalogue. In case the desired GPART
can be identified already in the explorer, it is possible to right click and
choose the Select command to assign the catalogue reference
(SPREF) to the selected item(s) in the drawing. There is also a
possibility to define filters, so that the filters can be applied to the
search.
When the Find button is clicked, the search result will be displayed in
the result list pane to the right:
To define a search filter click Define filter link label, the Define filters form appears. Click the New filter
button, another form appears, asking the user to “Enter name for new filter” enter HORIZONTAL VESSEL
and click the OK button.
In the fields below select an attribute from the pull down list, now select an Operator and finally enter a
value. In this case the attribute will be PRITYPE, the Operator = and the Value HVES, and click the OK
button.
In the Filter drop down list HORIZONTAL VESSEL will now appear as a filter that can be used, click the
Find button to perform the search when an appropriate element is selected in the Catalogue hierarchy.
If default filters for shapes have been specified in Diagrams Options or in the Default Catalogue Search
Filter, the == Use default filter from item == option will have to be selected for these to take effect.
When a shape associated with a default filter is selected, and the == Use default filter from item == is
applied, as soon as the Find button is clicked, the associated filter will automatically be applied
The Customize button is used to allow the user to change which attributes will be visible in the search
results. Click the Customize button, the Catalogue Search Result Presentation Settings form appears, un-
tick the boxes for the attributes no longer required to be displayed and then click the OK button.
The user can select the Horizontal layout, Vertical layout or Results list only using the right click
context menu in the results pane. Group panel, Filter row and Summary Line can be turned on/off using
context menu as well
Selection Tables are available on the Selection Tables tab; that can be used to find catalogue items in a
way similar to specifications.
Having a selection in the Table and Type drop down lists click the Find button, the pane on the right hand
side will be filled with relevant selection(s) of catalogue items represented by a Table Item (TABITE)
database elements.
If the Auto select table and type from item checkbox is checked, the table and type drop down will
automatically be set according to applicable default settings under the Diagrams Options > General
Options > Catalogue Search Settings.
A selection table item can contain default values that will be applied to the shape when the catalogue
reference is set, provided that the Apply default values to item checkbox is checked. This can be followed
up in the Message Log where messages regarding to assigned default attributes are provided.
If the Apply filter on selection changed checkbox is checked, after an element is selected on drawing,
table items are automatically filtered by values of answers for questions corresponding with attributes of the
element.
The catalogue searching filters are stored in CatalogSearchDbFilters.xml file in the defaults folder the
location of this file:C:\AVEVA\AVEVA Diagrams\Data14.1.0\DFLTS
If a catalogue reference is known for an item of equipment this can be added in AVEVA Diagrams, although
this would usually be done by the 3D designer.
From the drafting canvas select the equipment symbol that requires a catalogue reference, then from the
Catalogue Search form either navigate to the part from the Catalogue Search explorer and right click and
from the context menu select the Select command or from the search results pane click the Select button.
In the Shape Data window the Spref attribute should now have the GPART or selection table reference
added.
Through the Attribute Presentation format notation, attribute information can be collected from the DB
element that corresponds to the shape as well as from hierarchically superior elements and referenced
elements. It can also be combined with literals in an arbitrary way.
The native notation uses square brackets [ ] for attribute references that should be evaluated before
presentation. All characters outside the brackets are considered as literals and will be presented as-is.
Referenced attributes can be referred by a dot notation (reference.attribute). References can be in several
steps, in that case the reference chain will be followed to resolve the expression and find the attribute value.
An arbitrary number of literals and attribute references can be combined to form advanced attribute
presentation and annotation strings.
Using [scplin.bore] native syntax will fetch the default bore attribute from the pipeline element that owns the
current hierarchically subordinate element, for a valve [owner.owner.owner.bore] will provide the same
result as previous. The owner of a valve is the SCSEG element, the owner. Owner is the SCBRAN element,
and the owner. Owner is the SCPLIN element. [name]-[spref.name] will display the name of the current
element, a literal (in this case a "-"), and the name of the related catalogue element.
In AVEVA Diagrams, when an update is done to a database item from Command Window or Schematic
Explorer all forms (i.e. Shape Data Window) and annotations showing drawing-based data will require an
update accordingly. Refresh will be carried out automatically for any changes on database elements that are
directly related to shapes on open diagrams. For example, if the user changes an attribute on an equipment
item in the database, and there is an open diagram containing a symbol representing this equipment item in
the current session, the shape data attributes as well as related annotations for this symbol will be
automatically updated.
However, in the cases below the user should consider executing a Refresh manually or with the help of
Diagrams Options settings.
For referenced data in other elements In the case of an update in the catalogue database an
annotation using the syntax [SPREF.CATR.PARA(1)], it will
not be automatically refreshed. The user will have to
manually use the Refresh command to see the update on
the drawing.
For drawings that are currently not open These will either have to be manually refreshed after
opening, or the Refresh drawing on opening setting in
Diagrams Options should be used.
For Pseudo Attributes These will not be automatically re-calculated and refreshed
if any data they depend on is changed, the refresh has to
be done manually by the user to see any updated values
using the pseudo attributes.
PML1 expressions should be enabled by setting Parse for PML1 expressions in annotations to True from
Annotations settings in Diagrams Options, and always be enclosed with curly brackets { }. The usage of
native square bracketed attribute references within PML1 expressions is also supported. In such case the
square bracketed attribute references are resolved first, and then the PML1 expression is parsed.
The dot notation can be replaced by the ‘of’ word in PML1, i.e. instead of {AFTER([owner.name],’/’) it
could be used {AFTER([name of owner],’/’)
The notation can also be a result of a PML1 expression. For more information about PML1 functions
please see Software Customisation Reference Manual, PML1 Expressions
To get a particular element from an attribute of array type, use a (number) notation. i.e.,
owner.diaref(1). The enumeration of elements is 1-based. The (0) string will give all elements of the
array. To reference an array element in PML1 expressions, use the attribute name followed directly by
a number, i.e. ppbo2
Fonts type can be mapped from a DGN line style to an AVEVA Diagrams style. New mapping can be added
using the New button and an existing mapping can be removed using the Delete button.
Once the required settings on all tabs have been selected, the
Save Settings button at the base of the form can be used to
save the settings. These settings are stored in
“DgnDiagramsImportSettings.xml” file in the defaults folder
which is referred as %<PROJ_CODE>DFLTS%/Diagrams.
By default, there is no setting file delivered with installation. User has to create it by clicking “Save
settings” button.
To overwrite the current settings with those that have previously been saved, use the Load Settings button.
Once the settings and line mappings are set use the Import button to ingress the DGN file to an AVEVA
Diagrams file. Click Dismiss button to close the form.
The workflow below shows how to export AVEVA Diagrams as AutoCAD (.dwg) and the DGN (.dgn) will be
identical:
If the diagram has several pages, the Dwg export will only export the current page that is being viewed
(or a section of it)
There is also a Default drop down list in this tab where a default line style that can be applied, so if no
mapping exists for an AVEVA Diagrams line style then the default AutoCAD line style will be used.
To change the default mappings use the drop down lists available on each of the line types. The AVEVA
Diagrams (Visio) line type can be selected on the left and then matched to an AutoCAD line style on the
right hand side.
If an AutoCAD line style is not available in the list then the Refresh icon can be used which will re-read
the Diagrams.lin line styles file, available in the installation location
Colour, Line Width and Line Pattern can be modified using the layer information of the shapes from the
Layers tab. The list of layers will be populated from the current diagram’s available layer list.
User can change the Fill colour, Text colour and Item colour by clicking button.
Once the required settings on all tabs have been selected, the Save button at the base of the form can be
used to save the settings. These settings are stored in DiagramsCadExport.xml file in the defaults folder
which is referred as %<PROJ_CODE>DFLTS%/Diagrams. To overwrite the current settings with those that
have previously been saved, use the Load button.
Once the settings and line mappings are set use the Export button to create the AutoCAD file. The file will
be created and saved in the specified location. Click Dismiss button to close the form.
The DGN Export form is similar to the DWG Export. In addition, the user can select a seed file, display the
attached libraries including line type and font libraries. The user will then need to map the fonts and levels if
required.
The Excel Import and Excel Export facility allows user to import and export of Excel Workbook files to and
from database. Excel Import can be reached from the Project tab, under the Import > Excel Import Wizard
and similarly Excel Export can be reached from Export > Excel Export Wizard submenus or via the
Manage tab for the Excel Import Wizard and Excel Export Wizard
Where an Excel file is used for an import, the file may contain multiple worksheets. Each worksheet may
contain different element types. The worksheets which will be imported may be selected. Columns in a
Worksheet may be mapped to corresponding attributes in the database. Owner/Member relationships
between elements in each worksheet may be defined by providing a column to represent the OWNER
attribute in the child element worksheet.
Prior to an import, a summary listing of the changes to the database that the import will result in will be
displayed. All, or a selection of these changes may be accepted, and the import run. The import may also be
cancelled without changes being made to the database.
Where an Excel file is generated by the export tool, the element types and the attributes of those elements
which will be included in the export may be defined. Each element type included in an export will be
exported to its own named worksheet in the generated Excel file.
If a round trip of exported data is required, then key attributes required to maintain element identity,
such as REF and NAME need to be included in the export. For creating new elements using import,
OWNER attribute needs to be included in the imported file
The configuration defined for an export or an import may be saved, and used again. A single configuration
may be used for the export and import of a workbook layout.
For more detailed information on Excel Import/Export please see the AVEVA Schematic Model
Manager (TM-3541) Training Guide
This functionality is introduced in Diagrams to display dynamic icons for the PBS text node in the Flexible
Explorer.
The Flexible Explorer formula based icons can be changed depending on the current node value, to do this,
the icon definition should be parametrized in Lexicon:
Select group (SchematicClassesForGroup) and define PML text expression by clicking on the browsing
button for Flexible Explorer Icon.
A FlexibleExplorer Expression Editor window will be displayed, click the Insert parameter expression
and select the group SchematicClassesForGroup (Same group) from the Pull-down menu.
Check that the Flexible Explorer Icon field contains the text expression selected from the FlexibleExplorer
Expression Editor form.
Click on the Save Work button in the Lexicon main toll bar:
From AVEVA Diagrams 14.1.SP1, select the Project tab then select the Get
Work option from the application pull-down menu
The icons shape in the Flexible Explorer will be changed from the old form to the new one:
The highlighted defined items and the relevant auxiliary will be removed for the purpose of the training.
Using the details on the following pages the user should complete the drawing.
