CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter comprises the background of the study that describes

the reasons why the researcher intends to conduct the study. Because of

those reasons, problem of the study, objective of the study, and

significance of the study are formulated.

A. Background

As social beings, humans cannot be separated by the name of the

communication process. In social life, people need to interact with others

because of them can't live alone. Through the process of communication,

people can exchange ideas, mind, their intentions for something in social

life, helping each other and sharing with each other.

In communicating, people need a means of delivering messages. In

conveying messages or human activities in their lives, what is meant by

means of communication is language. In social life, language plays an

important role and will always be used in every aspect of human life.

Therefore, nothing can be separated from the language even from any

region. In social life, both men and women use language to communicate.

Regarding language, we can study it in linguistic lessons. As we

know that linguistics is the scientific study of language. With linguistics,

we can understand the nature of language in general by asking questions

1
2

such as: What distinguishes human language from other animal

communication systems? What features are common to all human

languages? How are linguistic communication methods (speech, writing,

sign language) related to each other? How is language related to other

types of human behavior? etc.

In linguistics, studies between humans and languages can be studied in

sociolinguistics. Sociolinguists study the relationship between language

and society. Sociolinguistics explaining why we speak differently in

different social contexts, and concerned with identifying the social

functions of language and the ways it is used to convey social meaning.

Examining the way people use language in different social contexts,

provides a wealth of information about the way language works, as well as

about the social relationships in a community, and the way people convey

and construct aspects of their social identity through their language. (Janet

Holmes 1992:1)

Sali Tagliamore (3) stated that sociolinguistics argues that language

exists in context, dependent on the speaker who is using it, and dependent

on where it is being used and why. Speakers mark their personal history

and identity in their speech as well as their socio-cultural, economic and

geographical coordinates in time and space.

One important variable in communication is gender differences. This

means that men and women have differences in communication. The way
3

the language is used by man and woman is influenced by the differences

between the language used by man and woman, for example, when women

and men are involved in conversations, there must be at least one

interesting topic that allows them to keep the conversation going despite

gender differences. Young and old people have different topics in

conversation. Similarly, male and female prefer different topics in their

conversations.

The differences between male and female languages in conversation

can be found in various media, including a motivational autobiography.

People can get information or messages conveyed from stories described

in autobiography. Autobiography describes a person's life based on his real

story. This gives the characters and stories as if they were real.

The motivation autobiography studied in this research is based on the

true story of Prof. Hamdan Juhannis released in 2015. The motivation

autobiography intitled “Melawan Takdir”. This autobiography tells about

the struggle of an orphan, and very poor from Mallari village Bone district

named Hamdan Juhannis able to study S2 and S3 abroad and become the

youngest professor at the age of 38.

The interesting thing about this autobiography is the way prof.

Hamdan Juhannis struggled to continue his education despite many

obstacles. the struggle included amazing and funny, one of which was

selling "Pawa roti", helping to harvest rice, and so on. the time frame of
4

the story happened since childhood Prof. Hamdan Juhannis to become the

youngest professor. So the way Prof. Hamdan Juhannis is a refresher

among today's readers who miss their childhood because they can be

nostalgic.

Autobiography Prof. Hamdan Juhannis will be studied sociolinguistics

so that the meaning contained therein can be known. So, the researcher

will research under the title “Sociolinguistics Analysis of Gender

Autobiography Prof. Hamdan Juhannis in Melawan Takdir”.

B. Problem Statement

Based on the problem background above, the researcher put forward

problem statement is what the differences between language women and

men in “Melawan Takdir”?

C. Objective of Research

In relation to the research problem, the objective of the study is to

describe the differences between language women and men in “Melawan

Takdir”.

D. The Significance of The Research

This research will be expected to have the following theoretical and

practical uses:

1. Theoretic

Theoretically, this research is expected to enrich the knowledge of

scientific research in the field of linguistics and references for the analysis

of similar sociolinguistics in the future,

5

2. Practice

Practically, this research is expected to be able to add insight and

knowledge to students of English Education about the struggle of Prof.

Hamdan Juhannis studies S2 and S3 abroad and provides input and

motivation to readers who have life stories such as Prof. Hamdan Juhannis

don’t give up fighting through this research.
