Quadratic Equation
Quadratic Equation in Standard Form: ax2 + bx + c = 0
a, b and c are known values. a can't be 0.
"x" is the variable or unknown (we don't know it yet).

2x2 + 5x + 3 = 0 In this one a=2, b=5 and c=3

Square Root Principles

square root of a number b is the solution of the equation
x2=b . It is a number that when multiplied by itself gives
you b . Every positive number b has two square roots ,
denoted √b and √−b . The principal square root of b is the
positive square root, denoted b√ .

Example 1:
The square roots of 25 are √25=5 and −√25=−5 since 52=25 and (−5) 2=25 .

The principal square root of 25 is √25=5 .

Example 2:
Simplify. √36
√36 indicates the principal (or positive) square root so 36√=6 .

Factoring
Factoring: Finding what to multiply together to get an
expression.
It is like "splitting" an expression into a multiplication of
simpler expressions.
Example: factor 2y+6
Both 2y and 6 have a common factor of 2:
2y is 2 × y
6 is 2 × 3
So we can factor the whole expression into:
2y+6 = 2(y+3)

So 2y+6 has been "factored into" 2 and y+3

Completing The Square

"Completing the Square" is where we ...

... take a Quadratic Equation and turn it

like this: into this:

ax2 + bx + c = 0 a(x+d)2 + e = 0
For those of you in a hurry, I can tell you that:d = b2a
and:e = c − b 4a
2

example:
Start with:
("b" is 6 in this case)

Complete the Square:

Also subtract the new term

Simplify it and we are done.

Quadratic Formula
Quadratic Formula: x = −b ± √(b2 − 4ac)
2a
Just put the values of a, b and c into the Quadratic
Formula, and do the calculations.
Example: Solve 5x2 + 6x + 1 = 0
Coefficients are:a = 5, b = 6, c = 1
Quadratic Formula:x = −b ± √(b2 − 4ac)2a
Put in a, b and c:x = −6 ± √(62 − 4×5×1)2×5
Solve:x = −6 ± √(36 − 20)10
x = −6 ± √(16)10
x = −6 ± 410
x = −0.2 or −1

Discriminant

The discriminant is the part of the quadratic formula

under the square root. x = −b ± √(b2 − 4ac)
2a
When the Discriminant (b2−4ac) is:
positive, there are 2 real solutions
zero, there is one real solution
negative, there are 2 complex solutions
Example:
6x +10x−1=0
2
10x +8x −3=0
2

b −4ac
2
b −4ac
2

=10 −4(6)(−1)
2
=8 −4(10)(-3)
2

=100+24 =64+120
=124 =184
