driving the narrative.

• “Advocacy Toolkit”
o How to Create a One-Pager for Policymakers: Tips and Template
▪ When contacting policymakers, it is best to rely on short and to the point
write ups of your goals and intentions. This helps keep the focus tight and
encourages policymakers to quickly review your proposal.
o Elevator Pitch Template
▪ If you ever come in contact with a policymaker or decision maker in a
leadership position, it is important to have a quick minute or two speech
prepared to best help effectively get your point across in a professional
and convincing manner.
o Personal Advocacy Checklist
▪ This checklist will help you determine your next steps towards becoming
a leader in digital learning. This will help you self-assess and set goals to
help assist broadening your impact.
o State Legislator Scavenger Hunt
▪ This helps you to gain a better understanding about your local
policymakers to better help you connect with them and improve your own
understanding of their legislation.
My Summary:
This was an incredibly interesting activity. It helped me to better deepen my
understanding of how digital citizenship and technology education works outside of my own
classroom and school. In my building, students are encouraged to use technology, and are
given plenty of opportunities to do so. However, teachers are not always qualified enough or
educated enough to guide the instruction and the most effective way possible. I think the
standards for educators provided on this platform need to be shared to all teachers who are
using technology in the field. It is a great way to articulate the expectations we have when
teaching with technology. I think it is all too often that people think the role of the teacher is
lessoned with the use of instructional technology. However, we are critical in the process.
These standards help outline the role of the teacher and student in a classroom using
technology as an instructional tool.
I was also interested in advocacy part of this assignment. I was interested in learning
how to effectively contribute in the overall process of instructional technology legislation
and how to better broaden the impact teachers can have in this process. The toolkit and
resources provided there are great starting places to not only self asses and step into various
position to increase your impact in this area. The tools and resources support and guide
anyone interested in reaching out to policymakers to make their pitch and attempt to reach
their goal as effective as possible. Overall, the ISTE website is a great platform for educators
to get clear expectations for both them and their students when using technology to instruct
in the classroom, and it also helps support and guide anyone looking to reach out to
policymakers in the field.
