ABSTRACT
Esterification is the process of making compounds through the reaction between RCOOH carboxylic acids
and R'OH alcohols (where R and R 'can be the same or different) by forming an ester and water. A
carboxylic acid ester is a compound containing the -CO2R group with R which can form alkyl or aryl. The
esterification process is a reversible reaction (reaction back and forth and takes place slowly). The
esterification process can be accelerated by heating at high temperatures and and also catalyzed with using
an acidic catalyst. Other variables that affect the production of esters are mixing, comparison of reagents
and reaction time. Esters have a distinctive aroma or odor and can be influenced by the functional structure
of the ester. The purpose of this experiment is to find out the results and process of making banana oil and
wintergreen oil. In this experiment, positive results have been obtained, namely the production of esters
which produce aromatic aromas of bananas in banana oil (iso-amyl acetate) and mint aromas such as balms
in wintergreen oil (methyl salicylate) formed in the esterification reaction with the addition of carboxylic
acids and alcohol with concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The final result in banana oil also appears to
form two layers in a test tube that separates the banana oil and water, where in the results the banana oil is
below and the water is above due to differences in the density of the two solutions (density of water is 1
gr.mL-1 and the density of iso-amyl acetate is 0.8 gr.mL-1).
