AFT Fathom 10 Visual platform for modeling

incompressible flow in pipe networks

List of features in the new version 10.0 software version

Introduction

AFT Fathom brings increased productivity to the pipe flow engineer by combining
traditional engineering hydraulic analysis with an intuitive graphical user interface. By
implementing a drag-and-drop method of pipe flow modeling, AFT Fathom simplifies the
pipe network modeling process.

AFT Fathom can show both input data and analysis results in visual form, allowing rapid
analysis of a model's validity. Identifying poor assumptions, catching typographical or
modeling errors, and rerunning models are all accelerated because of AFT Fathom's
graphical environment.

Whether your pipe system model will be used to evaluate and improve an existing system
or to design a new one, AFT Fathom increases your productivity in the modeling process.

AFT Fathom Key Features

AFT Fathom can be used to model a wide variety of incompressible flow systems,
including:

• Open and closed (recirculating) systems

• Network systems that branch or loop, with no limit on the number of loops
• Pressure fed systems and gravity fed systems
• Pumped systems, including multiple pumps in parallel or in series
• Pumps with variable speed, controlled pressure, controlled flow and viscosity
corrections
• Systems with pressure and/or flow control valves
• Systems with valves closed and pumps turned off
• Heat Transfer and system energy balance
• Systems with variable density and viscosity
• Multiple design cases in a single model file (Scenario Manager)
• Non-Newtonian fluid behavior
• Cost calculation of pump energy usage

AFT Fathom provides many standard loss models for pipe system components, but also
allows you to enter your own loss data. Variable loss models that depend on flow are
supported.

AFT Fathom's powerful solution engine is based on standard techniques used for many
years in industry. The Newton-Raphson method is used to solve the fundamental
equations of pipe flow that govern mass and momentum balance. Solutions are obtained
by iteration, and matrix methods optimized for speed are employed to obtain
convergence.

New features in AFT Fathom 10.0.1209 (03.10.2019)
Changes to computation logic that could impact results

• Fixed a problem with graphing efficiency data when using a controlled pump. It
was displaying the efficiency for the pump at 100% speed. A fixed speed pump
was not affected.
• Fixed a problem calculating free convection if the pipe was being heated by the
ambient fluid.
• Viscosity corrections and slurry derating corrections to pumps using an X-Y
interpolated curve fit type presented incorrect output values for Overall Power,
Overall Efficiency, and NPSHR. Pressure and flow results would also be
affected if using a Multiple Configuration pump with X-Y interpolated curves.

Changes to data management that could impact results

• Fixed a problem when graphing POR values on a pump vs system curve when
the pump was not at 100% speed. It was using the BEP at the 100% speed as
the reference.
• Fixed several problems related to using the Hazen-Williams factor as a GSC
variable. The initial run was correct but reloading the scenario or transferring
the GSC parameters as the initial condition would not work.

Changes that do not impact results

• Fixed a Global Edit problem when changing pipes to use buried pipe heat
transfer where it was requiring an external convection coefficient. Opening the
pipe and clicking OK will resolve this as well.
• Fixed a problem with fluid groups that also use one of a few Chempak fluids
which don't require a pressure. Unit passing errors would be shown as the
model is started. The result would be correct.
• Fixed an inconvenience where two confirmation messages would be given if a
junction was put on the Workspace and there were child scenarios with output.
• Updated the Excel Import workbook to include heat flux, heat rate, ambient
temperature, ambient fluid velocity, soil temperature and buried pipe depth.
• Added new Output parameter for Resistance Total (which is pipe wall +
components).
• Changed Output parameter Resistance Hydraulic to Resistance Wall (which is
just the wall friction) to better describe the parameter.
• Fixed Print Preview to force expanding of collapsed grids in output.
• Using RefProp after selecting Chempak with high accuracy properties option
could cause a property calculation error. This has been resolved.
