CHAPTER 3: Reflection on the Internship

The On –Job Training in Communicative English has served as a

firsthand experience in exploring my teaching skills or caliber.

On an overall basis I evaluate my internship program at Eden

public School and experiences as a good one. The training period

from November 7 to December 2 crucially helped me to gain new

outlooks, new work experiences and it helped me to acquire a

precise knowledge regarding my teaching abilities my positives

and negatives. It shaped a strong desire in me to look for new

improvements especially in adopting teaching methodologies that

would help the students to grasp the matter with more clarity

without much stress. The internship has helped me to know about

the dedication required to work as a teacher especially it helped me

to gain knowledge about the importance of resourcefulness and

subject knowledge and the pressing need to keep updated with the

use of current teaching aids .The internship has helped to work

with more team spirit and coordination abiding by the rules and

regulations, guidelines and instructions of the authority and the

senior teachers.

The syllabus followed in the BA.Communicative English

,Journalism & English Literature has helped me during my

internship program especially the topics which I have learnt in our

communicative skills paper ,remedial English grammar paper and

in our reading and comprehension paper.

For engaging the students during the Communicative English

hours I have used the possibilities of several teaching

methodologies . To check and improve the communication skills of

students group discussions , role plays were organized . To check

and to improve their proficiency in public speaking extempore

sessions and just a minute speech were conducted for students

studying at primary and upper primary levels. To evaluate their

thoroughness and understanding of the topics taught the students

were given entry exercises, worksheets , puzzles and other minor

games that would deepen their curiosity in learning .Apart from

this test papers ,dictations and quizzes were conducted to cater to

the effectiveness of a smooth grasping of the topics .During the

substitution hours the students of lower classes were engaged

with games like spell bee , hang man and children’s rhymes were

taught intending to improve their vocabulary, pronunciation and

communication skills. To check their comprehension skills in the

language stories and poems were read to them.

To specific activities like THREAD STORY provided to the

students of class 4 came out with a good response and feedback

A good feedback was obtained from the authority as well as from

the students for DESCRIBE THE PICTURE activity provided for

class 7 students. On an overall basis I got a good response and

support from the authority and from the students.

Challenges:

 The abiding of the language rule was not given much

importance in the campus so it served as a major problem

in maintaining a good continuity catering to the

effectiveness of the training offered to the students.

 The insistence of the authority solely to follow and

organize activities that would help the students to improve

their communication skills without prioritizing and

focusing on the theory portions or grammar portions

proved to be a major problem as it reduced the scope of

offering a good subject base to the students.

Suggestions:

Firstly I would like to suggest that a uniform

syllabus to be taught in various classes has to be

fixed beforehand so that it would be possible to in

cooperate a common standard in regard of the

topics covered .i would like to offer this point as my

suggestion for improvement.

Conclusion.

Through the presentation of this concluding chapter I intend to

present a SWOT ANALYSIS based on my On –Job Training

experiences. When I sum up my internship experiences on an

overall basis I would like to state that the internship program at

Eden Public School has immensely served as a platform for

acquiring a first hand experience in teaching and the training

period from November 7, 2016 to December 2 , 2016 was ample

enough to analyze and find out my strengths and weaknesses

associated with my teaching ability.

Strengths

1. The internship program in Communicative English has

immensely helped me to improve my interactive skills, public

speaking skills and it was helpful in combating my stage fright

2. The internship program has developed an ardent spirit to stay

adaptive.

3. The internship program helped me to acquire more self

confidence and enthusiasm.

4. The internship program proved to be helpful as it increased my

knowledge about the qualities and drawbacks in regard of my

teaching through the feedback follow ups which I have

obtained from the students.

5. The internship program has helped me to explore my ability to

motivate and encourage the students.

6. It has helped me to look for more improvements in the teaching

methodologies adopted and it has increased my urge to

improve my resourcefulness and subject knowledge everyday.

7. It has improved my commitment and dedication levels.

8. The internship program has helped me to find the possibility of

using bookish or syllabus oriented knowledge in practical life.

Weaknesses

1 .The lack of experience to maintain the discipline of students

during the first few days seemed to be one my significant

weakness but I believe that I was able to correct that weakness

during the subsequent weeks.

2.The inability to clarify certain doubts raised by the students

proved to be another significant weakness in the first phase of

the internship but I believe that I was able to counter that

weakness by making constant efforts to improve my

resourcefulness.

3. Lack of audibility at the initial stage was another severe

weakness which hindered my efforts to explain the matters

clearly to the students.

Opportunities

1 Primarily the internship program served as a first hand

experience in teaching, Tthereby I got an opportunity to

develop an overall idea about my teaching ability.

2. The constant support and feedback which I have obtained

from the authority and students has immensely helped me to

utilize my teaching ideas and methodologies to a good extent.

3. This internship has proved helped for me particularily in

team spirit, my enthusiasm and skills to adopt with new work

environments.

6. It stimulated in me a hope to stay dedicated and committed

to my superiors and to strive to finish the duties assigned to me

in its perfect time.

Threats

1. The insistence of the institution to impart training to students

solely through activities that would help them to improve their

communication skills leaving aside the focus on the theory and

grammar portions seemed to be a major threat as it was

difficult to ensure to what extent the students has acquired a

thorough base in the topics taught to them.

2. As the language rule was not strictly enforced in the campus

,the possibility of maintaining a continuity was hindered as it

was difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of the

communication skills training offered to the students to its full

fledge.

3. The inability of the students to come out with a proper

response to the individual activities which were implemented

during the Communicative English primarily due to stage fright

seemed to be a major problem.
