Administration and
Bioentrepreneurship
By combining courses in advanced biology/biotechnology with business tools and
methods, you will learn what is required to translate scientific research and patents into
innovative products and viable business opportunities. The teaching draws on industry
experts, high quality academic faculty, real life cases, insight into bio ventures, and
includes a three month internship in one of Denmark’s leading life-science companies.
BBIP
MSc in Business Administration and Bioentrepreneurship is a fulltime two year
programme. The programme is part of the BioBusiness & Innovation Platform
(BBIP), offering Denmark's first university degree and academic courses bridging
business and biotech. BBIP is a cooperation between Copenhagen Business School
(CBS), The Technical University of Denmark (DTU Systems Biology) and University
of Copenhagen (KU) and leading life science firms in Denmark.
You may already have completed biology/biotechnology courses meeting firstyear
requirements at a Danish or an international university. In this case, you may enroll
directly into the second year of the programme. That is also the case if you have
previously fulfilled these requirements as part of completing a master’s or PhD
degree in biology/biotechnology.
In your fourth and final semester you complete an internship in a leading company
in the Copenhagen region within biotech, pharma or industrial bio. Your internship
will be in a business department (marketing, business development, competitor
intelligence etc.) in one of these firms. In parallel with the internship you write your
master thesis. Your thesis presents a systematic, in depth analysis of selected
issues you have encountered while you developed your business plan and during
your internship.
BBIP is a platform for collaboration on biobusiness teaching, involving CBS in
partnership with DTU Department of Systems Biology, and University of
Copenhagen. Partnerships also include leading lifescience firms in Denmark (read
more about BBIP here – umbrella page). The master in bioentrepreneurship
enrolls students with a lifescience background. Business students can enroll into
courses as single electives, or combined into a minor i Bioentrpreneurship.
The mix of lifescience and business students in BBIP classes gives you an
opportunity to build cross disciplinary skills and networks.
Developed in close cooperation with industry, the BBIP programme gives you a
unique opportunity to apply your skills to actual business challenges in reallife
entrepreneurship projects, and in the business activities of leading lifescience
firms.
The lifescience industry is a key driver in the Danish economy. To maintain
momentum, the sector needs innovation and entrepreneurship to build new firms
and to create new business in existing firms. In lifescience, the steps of
transforming research into business are complicated. To handle this transformation,
you must both understand the science behind new developments, and also master
methods and tools in finance, marketing, intellectual property right, business model
design and much more. The integration of lifescience and business skills is highly
useful for lifescience firms, and for this reason, Denmark’s leading companies have
played a main role in starting and shaping BBIP.
