10.15 - 12:15, 11th September, 2018
Instructions
This is an closed book test.
There are 45 marks in total. 45 will count as 100%.
You have 120 minutes to complete the test.

Question 1. {22 Marks}

1. Give two reasons why expert users may not prove to be a good source of information about
the requirements for an interactive system. {3 Marks}

2. Why might sighted users also benefit if designers consider the needs of blind users in the
development of a web site. {3 Marks}

3. Briefly explain why a designers model of a system will be different from the end-users.
{3 Marks}

4. Explain the basis differences between Norman and Abowd & Beale frameworks. Discuss
how Norman’s model of interaction framework used in general HCI helps you explain the
problems in the dialog between a user and a computer. {5 Marks}

5. What is direct manipulation in the realm of HCI and how does it compare to batch in-
teraction? State two advantages and one disadvantage of using direct manipulation as an
interaction framework as compared to batch interaction. {5 Marks}

6. Discuss the significance of Fitts’ law for interface design in HCI. {3 Marks}

Question 2. {10 Marks}

You have been assigned responsibility for designing an user interface for South African Revenue
Services (SARS) web facility that is used by users to file their income taxes.

A study of the system data logs shows two surprising patterns of behavior. Some users repeatedly
enter different values under income amount and then change them, apparently trying out tax
brackets. The other pattern includes long pauses between entering each piece of data, with the
same users accessing taxation criteria documentation pages in alternation with data entry pages.

1. How might you account for these two patterns? {3 Marks}

1
2. What usability procedures might you introduce to improve usability of the system for these
two classes of users? {3 Marks}

3. If you were now asked to extend the online facility to visually disabled people, what
improvements would you make to meet the requirements of this target group.{4 Marks}

Question 3. {13 Marks}

Natural language provides an effective way for communication, and has a huge potential of being
successfully used in HCI applications.

1. Come up with a detailed prototype for designing a natural language based user interface
interaction model for your chosen application. All components of the model, along with
data type and collection should be included. {8 Marks}

2. Discuss two advantages and two disadvantages you foresee with a system based on natural
language that involves speech verses text input. {3 Marks}

3. Discuss the idea of a multi model system in this respect and how would you test the us-
ability of such a system for your application. {2 Marks}
