The mission of the YWCA is to eliminate racism and empower women. The YWCA
location in Spokane offers services like transitional camps, shelters, and clothing for women that
are victims of domestic violence and kids that have experienced trauma. A way to help this
organization is through grants. A project that would be beneficial to local community members is
to add another building that offers shelter, dining, and an area for recreational aspects. The total
fund I would be seeking is $40,000. This money would help rent out an area that can provide
services to women.

policy reform and social change. The YWCA is about impacting the women’s
The YWCA associations actively serve communities across the United States and the
mission of the YWCA is to eliminate racism and empower women. Our local YWCA in
Spokane, Washington offer services and programs aligned with racial justice, civil rights,
empowerment and economic advancement, and health and safety to meet the specific needs of
this community to promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. YWCA has been helping
women and children overcome social, economic, and personal barriers in order to accomplish
their goals and achiever healthier lives. (YWCA USA) In 2018, YWCA Spokane served 16,800
survivors and their children. 500 women and children receive safe shelter each year from
domestic violence through the housing service at the YWCA Spokane. Having more funds would
help the YWCA Spokane expand the shelter which could offer more services other than housing
like dining or cooking, emotional support, and an area for recreational therapy. The shelter is a
large home-like residence where women and children live cooperatively and share household
talks. This shelter manages a helpline and is staffed 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Shelters
offer 24-hour access to advocacy and support, basic food and necessities, emergency clothing,
and toiletries, laundry on site, computer station with internet and WiFi. Not only will women and
children benefit from this shelter, but it will make it more beneficial and easier for staff and
volunteers to have extra space where they can provide more for the women and children. It is

The goal of this project is to build or rent building for at least one more shelter with 4
apartment spaces, community dining, and a community recreation area. To achieve this goal, we
will need to the funds and space to build or rent. Getting the word out about the YWCA and
having the community understand their mission will increase the likelihood of members of the
community wanting to donate. The funds will have to be more than just grants but donations of
others as well. Other donations that would be beneficial that is not monetary would be toiletries,
kitchen utensils, games/toys, clothing, computers, etc. The money that is received would go
towards building a new YWCA shelter that that includes 4 apartments within that share a
community dining/kitchen, and a room for group recreational activities. It would be ideal to find
a building that could be bought or rented so then the only project we would need to do is
renovations to it. If there is not a copious amount of donations, funds will also go towards items
to be put in the shelter. Items not received by donations that we would need to fund include,
furniture (beds, couches, dressers), bathroom appliances (toilet, shower/bath, sink) and
TOTAL $40,000.00
Renovating 4 new apartments will cost each section around $5,000 which adding
appliances I have a budget of $10,000 which includes furniture and other appliances that would
be needed if there are not enough donations. The dining and kitchen area will cost around $9,000
which there is only one dining area and one kitchen among the 4 apartments. As for the
recreational area, the budget receives $1,000 to create a safe space for individuals to recreate in
activities or therapy.
