October 22, 2019: National Current Affairs

1. Pakistan, India agree on service fee for Kartarpur Corridor

• Despite tensions running high over Kashmir, Pakistan and India are set to sign the
agreement that would govern the operations of the visa-free Kartarpur Corridor for Indian
Sikh pilgrims.
• Foreign Office Spokesman Dr Muhammad Faisal, confirmed that an agreement had been
reached on the draft and the two sides would be signing it soon. He said `the dates for
signing of the accord were being worked out`.
• Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had earlier in the day said in a media statement
that the Indian government had conveyed its readiness `to sign the Agreement on Kartarpur
Sahib Corridor on 23 October 2019`.
• The details of the agreement had been under negotiation since March.

2. Lahore gets new DC after a month

• The government finally filled the important post of the deputy commissioner (DC) of
Lahore city district after a month, appointing Danish Afzal as the new official.
• It subsequently relieved Muhammad Asghar Joiya, the additional deputy commissioner
(ADC) revenue, of the additional charge he was holding since the transfer of former DC
Saleha Saeed on Sept 21.
• A Grade 19 of ficer (on acting charge basis)of Pakistan Administrative Service`s 35th
Common, Mr Afzal worked on various important positions in the province, including
additional secretary (coordination) to the chief secretary.

3. Envoys invited to visit civilian areas hit by Indian shelling

• Pakistan-based foreign diplomats would be taken to areas along the Line of Control, which
were hit by Indian shelling, to show that civilian population has been targeted and not the
alleged `terror launch pads` as was claimed by Indian Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat,
according to a diplomatic source.
• Gen Rawat claimed on October 20, 2019 that his troops had `destroyed three terror
camps` and inflicted heavy damage on the fourth one. It was alleged that the camps were in
`Jura, Athmuqam and Kundalsahi sectors`.
• Indian troops carried out heavy artillery strikes on civilian population in the wee hours of
Sunday in Nauseri, Jura, and Shahkot sectors, leaving six civilians and an army soldier
martyred in the unprovoked shelling, in addition to heavy damage to houses and other
civilian properties.
• The Indian government, a diplomatic source said, had been asked to provide coordinates
of the so called terror camps to prove its allegation that the targets were terror sanctuaries

4. President exempted from appearance in PTV attack case

• An anti-terrorism court of Islamabad on Monday exempted President Dr Arif Alvi and

others from personal attendance in Parliament House and PTV attacks case proceedings.
• The others accused exempted from personal attendance in this case are Foreign Minister
Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Defence Minister Pervaiz Khattak, Education Minister Shafqat
Mehmood, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Shaukat Yousafzai, PTI`s Punjab
President ljaz Chaudhry, Jahangir Khan Tareen and MNA Asad Umar.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan is also an accused in this case but he has been given
permanent exemption from appearance.
• Police invoked the anti-terrorism act against PTl chief Imran Khan and its leaders Dr Alvi,
Asad Umar, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Shafqat Mehmood and Raja Khurram Nawaz for
inciting violence during the 2014 sit-in.
• As per the prosecution, three people were killed and 26 injured, while 60 were arrested.

5. Directorate being set up to regulate seminaries

• The Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training has completed its homework
to open a directorate under which seminaries would be registered and facilitated.
• The project was almost complete, and in the next few days, the ministry would notify the
establishment of the Directorate General of Religious Education.
• It will be set up in the Basic Education Community School (BECS) building in G-8 and will
have regional offices in 16 cities.
• The education ministry`s joint education adviser, Rafiq Tahir, is likely to be made the head
of the directorate.

6. US urges India, Pakistan to maintain peace along LoC

• The United States on Monday called upon both India and Pakistan to maintain peace and
stability along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmir region.
• In a statement sent to South Asian media outlets, a State Department official also
emphasised the need for India and Pakistan to hold direct talks on Kashmir and other
issues.
• `We are aware of media reports of recent shelling at Line of Control. We call on all parties
to maintain peace and stability along LoC and to prevent cross-border terrorism,` the
official said.
• This `indiscriminate and ruthless` shelling began past midnight on Sunday and targeted
AJK villages along the LoC.

7. Thai king strips his consort of royal titles for disloyalty

• Thailand`s king has stripped his royal consort of her titles and military ranks for
disloyalty, accusing her of seeking to undermine the position of his official wife, the
country`s queen, for her own benefit.
• The royal command by 67-year-old King Maha Vajiralongkorn, made public on October 21,
2019, came just three months after he granted 34-year-old Sineenatra Wongvajirabhakdi the
consort title, reviving an old palace tradition of taking a junior wife.
• Sineenatra had her title of Chao Khun Phra Sineenatra Bilasakalayani withdrawn, along
with other royal and military titles and decorations.
• In May, the king named longtime companion Suthida Vajiralongkorn Na Ayudhya, his
queen, when they were married a few days before his formal coronation.

8. Lebanon approves sweeping reforms to appease agitators

• Lebanon`s cabinet approved a package of economic reforms and a 2020 budget with no
new taxes on October 21, 2019, hoping to appease the thousands of protesters that have
taken to the streets for the last five days to demand the government step down.
• Prime Minister Saad Hariri described the measures as a `financial coup`, saying no
government in Lebanon`s history has taken such steps before.
• As Hariri`s speech was aired live on all local TV stations, thousands of protesters who had
gathered in central Beirut chanted: `The people want to bring down the regime

9. Canada votes in election that could see Trudeau lose power

• Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faced the threat of being knocked from power
after one term as the nation held parliamentary elections on October 21, 2019.
• The 47-year-old Trudeau channelled the star power of his father, the liberal icon and late
Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, when he won in 2015 but a combination of scandal and high
expectations have damaged his prospects.
• Polls indicate Trudeau`s Liberal Party could lose to the rival Conservatives, or perhaps
win but still fail to get a majority of seats in Parliament and have to rely on an opposition
party to remain in power.

10. India to build solar, wind farms along Pakistan border

• India plans to build a string of renewable energy projects along its sun-baked, wind-
whipped western border, officials said on Monday, as New Delhi continues an ambitious
programme to reduce the country`s dependence on fossil fuels.
• Mired in an economic slowdown, the government has tripled spending over the last three
years as part of its push to cut down the use of oil and coal.
• `We are studying land feasibility and have identified projects worth 30 gigawatt capacity
for Gujarat and 25 gigawatt capacity for Rajasthan,` said Anand Kumar, new and renewable
energy secretary.
