Facts:

1. Conservation reserves and community reserves in India are terms denoting protected areas of India
which typically act as buffer zones to or connectors and migration corridors between established
national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and reserved and protected forests of India. Such areas are
designated as conservation areas if they are uninhabited and completely owned by the Government
of India but used for subsistence by communities and community areas if part of the lands is
privately owned.
These protected area categories were first introduced in the Wildlife (Protection) Amendment Act of
2002 − the amendment to the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. These categories were added
because of reduced protection in and around existing or proposed protected areas due to private
ownership of land, and land use.
2. Conservation reserves are located only in Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir,
Karnataka, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
3. Garpanchkot in West Bengal is the largest conservation reserve in India. The second largest is
Aghanashini in Karnataka.

6. Biosphere reserves are sites established by countries and recognized under UNESCO's Man and
the Biosphere (MAB) Programme to promote sustainable development based on local community
efforts and sound science. The programme of Biosphere Reserve was initiated by UNESCO in 1971.
The purpose of the formation of the biosphere reserve is to conserve in situ all forms of life, along
with its support system, in its totality, so that it could serve as a referral system for monitoring and
evaluating changes in natural ecosystems.
7. Nilgiri biosphere reserve is in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. It covers Wayanad, Nagarhole,
Bandipur, Mudumalai, Silent hills, Nilambur and Siruvani hills.
