The New York Film Academy (NYFA) is designed
for a new generation of storytellers: visual and
performing artists who share a driving passion to
achieve the highest level of professionalism as they
create their own original works. Our community
is united by a commitment to our philosophy of
learning by doing in a hands-on, intensive, and
collaborative environment.
From your first day of class at NYFA Los Angeles,
you will experience rigorous academics balanced
with practical application. You will train on industry-
standard equipment and software under the
guidance of working industry professionals as you
learn how all aspects of your chosen craft relate to,
interact with, and depend upon each other.
We welcome students from diverse backgrounds,
from all countries and walks of life, nurturing a
supportive, positive atmosphere conducive to the
level of collaboration required to do great work.
NYFA is in the heart of Hollywood. Located in the
Burbank area of Los Angeles — known as the
“Media Capital of the World” and home to such
institutions as NBC, Warner Bros. Entertainment,
and The Walt Disney Company — students are
immersed in the entertainment industry and are
encouraged to take advantage of Los Angeles film
opportunities.
During your time at NYFA, you can have the
opportunity to form innumerable and advantageous
ties to the industry. You can also expect excellent
weather and a rich and multicultural populous.
NYFA also offers personalized study experiences,
depending on each student’s area of interest.
At NYFA Los Angeles, students have unique
opportunities, such as working on the prestigious
Universal Studios backlot and screening at the
Warner Bros. facilities, and more. For example,
Screenwriting students can check into the Writers
Guild of America library to read original scripts
that can’t be found on the internet; Acting for Film
students can study performance during the day, and
then see a live television studio recording that same
night; and Producing students can network with an
entire city devoted to film production, developing
roots in the city that shapes the industry itself.
No matter your chosen discipline, NYFA Los Angeles

on programs to offer you the very best of industry-focused training, strong academics, real-world
experience, and a nurturing creative environment. We are delighted you have chosen the New York
Film Academy’s Los Angeles campus as your artistic home and professional training ground, and
encourage you to take full advantage of the unique resources available to you during your studies
-- from utilizing our premier facilities for your projects to reaching out to our staff for additional

Once admitted to NYFA, students may pay a deposit to secure their place in the program. The deposit for
all long-term programs (one year or longer) is $500, which is applied towards the first term tuition payment.
Most of the deposit is refundable except for the $100 administrative processing fee.

& Orientation Week for program enrollment,
mandatory orientations, and social activities.
This week is an integral part of attending
NYFA and helps introduce you to the school,
Los Angeles, your new classmates, and
networking in the entertainment industry.

Things to Remember
HEALTH INSURANCE AND
MEDICAL NEEDS
Health Insurance
NYFA requires students to have adequate health
insurance coverage for the duration of their
time attending a long-term program. To insure
compliance with NYFA’s policy of mandatory health
insurance coverage, long-term students will be
automatically enrolled and billed for participation
in the NYFA Student Health Insurance Plan
(NYFASHIP).
NYFASHIP is a comprehensive insurance plan
provided through Aetna, a nationwide provider of
health insurance plans and services. NYFASHIP
provides benefits and coverage for preventive,
routine, emergency, specialty, inpatient and
outpatient medical and psychological care, as well
as medications by a CA State provider.
Students who do not wish to participate in the
NYFA Student Health Insurance Plan can request to
waive enrollment by submitting proof of comparable
health insurance coverage for health care in Florida.
Students will be required to submit waiver requests
for each NYFASHIP enrollment period. Waiver
requests must be submitted before a designated
deadline. Exact deadline dates will be published on
the NYFASHIP website.
Insurance plans that DO NOT typically meet
requirements for waiver include out-of-state
Medicaid plans, travel insurance plans, catastrophic
plans and out-of-state HMO plans.
Those students able to provide proof of comparable
coverage for each NYFA enrollment period through
participation in the waiver request process will
be dis-enrolled from the NYFA Student Health
Insurance Plan and costs associated with NYFASHIP
enrollment will be removed from students accounts
or fully refunded.
Students who do not want to enroll in NYFASHIP
will need to purchase alternative health insurance
that provides coverage in FL for preventive, routine,
emergency, specialty, inpatient and outpatient
medical and psychological care, and medications
prescribed by CA State providers.
Medical Needs
It is strongly recommended that students schedule
and undergo a physical exam at least 30 days
prior to their program’s start date. Please read
the NYFA Immunization Policy posted on the NYFA
website. NYFA students are required to submit
proof of immunization against mumps, measles and
rubella (MMR). When meeting with your healthcare
provider, present the Student Immunization Record
Form provided in your acceptance packet. Your
healthcare provider will need to complete or verify,
sign and stamp this form. This form, signed,
verified, and stamped by your healthcare provider,
will serve as proof of your immunization against
MMR. NYFA students are also required to read the
information sheets on Hepatitis B and Meningitis
disease, also provided in this acceptance packet.
Although being immunized against hepatitis
B and Meningitis is not required, it is strongly
recommended!
NYFA also recommends that students request from
their healthcare providers copies of all prescriptions
for medication. Scheduling and attending an
appointment with your vision care provider is
also highly recommended, as you will want your
prescription for contact lenses and/or glasses to be
up-to-date and readily accessible. When traveling
with prescription medications, store medications
in your carry on baggage and keep them in their
original prescription bottles so they can properly
identified by airline security officials.
Accessibility Services
Students with documented disabilities are provided
with reasonable accommodations through a process
of meetings and documentation review. The Student
Accessibility Services (SAS) staff determine
appropriate accommodations in conjunction with the
student, and ensure that those accommodations are
in place for the student to access NYFA’s curricula
and services.

TRANSFER CREDITS
Students desiring credit for previous academic work
must submit a written request to the Associate
Dean for Academic Affairs, along with transcripts
and/or official score reports. No requests for
transfer credits can be evaluated until students
have submitted evidence of completed coursework.
All transfer credit requests must be made 30
days prior to matriculation. If you have questions
about transfer credits, contact your admissions
representative.
WHAT TO PACK
Los Angeles enjoys a temperate climate year-round,
slightly cooler in the winter and warmer in the
summer. Different neighborhoods within the Los
Angeles area can experience some temperature
differences, and Los Angeles is generally cooler
in the evening than during the day. Plan to wear
light layers throughout the year. While it does not
rain often, rain may come between the months of
January-March. It is practical to pack an umbrella or
light raincoat.
Carry-On Essentials:
• Form I-20, valid passport, and valid student
visa, if applicable.
• Driver’s license or government-issued ID.
• A minimum of $300 in U.S. dollars, as it may
take time for your funds to transfer to a U.S.
bank.
• Adequate supply of prescription medication
to ensure you have all the medication you
need until your next scheduled appointment
with your home-based physician. It may
not be possible to refill your medications in
Los Angeles, or it may take weeks to get
an appointment with a specialist or needed
healthcare provider.
• Prescription medications in their original
bottles.
• Medication sold “over the counter” in your
country may not be available “over the
counter” in the U.S., where you may need a
doctor’s prescription.
• Medical documentation, should you need
accommodations for learning differences and/
or disability.

• Contact lenses/eyeglasses and spares.
• Printed prescriptions for medication.
• Printed prescriptions for eyeglasses and
contact lenses, if needed.
FINANCES AND BANKING
Bring with you two forms of identification (a valid
driver’s license, passport, or other government-
issued photo identification card); two forms of ID are
required to open a bank account, cash a check, set
up cellular service, etc.
It is important that you have access to enough funds
to sustain you in case of delays in establishing
a local bank account and transferring funds. An
out-of-town check usually takes 10 days to clear.
It is common for banks to only cash money orders
and checks for customers who already have
existing bank accounts. To ensure you can purchase
essentials until you have full access to your funds,
we suggest you arrive with a minimum of $300 in
U.S. dollars.
The cost of living in Los Angeles can be high. Prior
to arriving, ensure that you have adequate funds
to cover your basic needs. Expenses to consider
beyond housing, tuition, and equipment fees may
include:
• Car, gas, insurance: Car and insurance
payments vary, while gas prices in Los
Angeles are higher than the national average
and could range from $3-$5/gallon.
• Uber/Lyft: Prices can range from $7-$50/ride,
depending on distance and time of day.
• Metro: $122/month for unlimited subway and
bus services, or $1.75 per one-way trip. For

• Food/drink: $20+/day, minimum.
• Cell Phone Service: $50-100/month.
HOUSING
Whether you are relocating from abroad or from
within the U.S., NYFA’s housing department is
a resource for students who are searching for a
place to live during their program. The housing
department is more than happy to assist you in
navigating through the challenging Los Angeles
housing market.

with any questions.
If you are unable to secure accommodation
before your arrival, book a hotel or short-term
accommodations for 1-2 weeks before you begin
your program so you can actively look at places once
you are physically in Los Angeles. Once you arrive,
you can meet with a NYFA housing coordinator who
can guide you in your search.
When Booking Your Own Accommodations:
• Begin your housing as soon as possible.
Searching for accommodations less than 30
days prior to your desired arrival date may
prohibit you from securing acceptable housing.
• If feasible, visit the desired accommodation at
least two weeks prior to your desired move-in
date.
• Be cautious of housing scams. Before making
any payment, ensure the accommodation you
are looking into is in a legitimate location AND
is available for rental.
• Please be aware that international students
may be asked for a larger deposit when
signing a lease.
• Consider the commute time from the
accommodation to the school.
• Consider what you can afford, and budget
accordingly.

If you are arriving to one of the recommended
airports, such as Los Angeles International (LAX) or
Burbank Airport (BUR), and need transportation from
or to the airport, these are the most-used services:

Through these websites, you can schedule a specific
date and time for pick-up from various airports.
Typically these services are cheaper and more
reliable than a taxi. You can also utilize app-based
rides through Uber or Lyft.
Transportation to NYFA:
NYFA is located in Burbank, and has three buildings
used for academic classes. The main NYFA building
is located at 3300 W. Riverside Dr. Most Acting for
Film classes are located at 3800 Barham Blvd. Most
post-production classes are held at Burbank Studios,
located at 3000 W. Alameda Ave.
To commute to NYFA, most students drive a car
or utilize an app-based ride through Uber or Lyft.
Parking at Riverside is free, and is available on
a first-come first-served basis. More information
about parking at NYFA will be available during
Registration and Orientation Week.
We realize that preparing to study at a school
located across the country or across the globe
involves considerable time, effort, and attention
to detail. Please know that we are available to

not all. Through an arrangement with Universal
Studios, our students will shoot in-class production
exercises on the prestigious Universal Studios
backlot. Sprawling over 390 acres of offices, alleys,
interior sound stages, and outdoor movie sets, the
Universal Studios backlot is a landscape made up
of neighborhoods inspired by locations around the
world.

Athletics
Since the Athletic Department’s establishment in
2014, NYFA’s athletic programs consistently advance
in enhancing the student athletes’ experiences,
evolving from a single men’s soccer team to multiple
athletic teams, earning six 1st place trophies, ten
2nd place plaques, and two third place plaques in
10 seasons.
NYFA Los Angeles Athletic Department provides
opportunities for students to compete in athletic
programs, such as men’s and women’s basketball,
soccer, volleyball, kendo, hiking, and fencing clubs.
The Athletics Department creates an environment
for students to cultivate positive relationships with
other students, enhancing networking opportunities
through camaraderie and valuable life skills
provided by our Athletic Leadership Development
Program.
While students engage in the most hands-on
intensive educational programs at NYFA, those who
become student athletes will continue their well-
rounded education within athletics, learning from
several highly qualified and trained coaching staff.
UCLA Hall of Famer and former NBA player Lucius
Allen coaches our men’s basketball team alongside
Steve Goldstein, who holds more than 35 years of
educational leadership and coaching experience.
Elise Cregg, former NCAA Athlete and USA
Volleyball player, coaches the men’s and women’s
volleyball team. Roy Lev-Ari and Pablo Diaz coach
our men’s and women’s soccer programs, bringing
over 10 years of coaching and playing experience.

Community Outreach
NYFA has several community outreach program
partnerships where we provide opportunities for
students and alumni to volunteer, mentor, and
share their creative and civic talents with our local
community. The goal is to increase inclusion of
underrepresented voices in the Visual, Performing,
and Cinematic Arts, while giving back to our greater
NYFA.EDU 15
community, all under the umbrella of “service
learning.” Students and alumni in good standing are
afforded an opportunity to mentor youth, and work
on creative projects with organizations including
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences,
Young Storytellers Foundation, The Actors’ Fund,
Actors for Autism, Hands4Hope, Urban Possibilities,
the Bill Duke Foundation, and the British Academy
of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles.
