My essay focuses on effective study habits for memory retention and how/ why they

work. I want to learn how to retain information in the most efficient way and learn how to easily

apply it as well. When tasked with studying for a big test or exam, time is precious and learning

how to study efficiently will help tremendously throughout college and the rest of my life. What

are some habits that are good for retaining information and why do they work?

Carey, Benedict. “How We Learn: the Surprising Truth about When, Where and Why It

Happens” Random House, 2015. 27 Oct. 2019.

This article is about the brain’s functionality and how memories are gained and when to

use them. It has many techniques that can be used such as getting sleep. Sleep can be used to

help store memories. There is also much more information on how the brain works in different

environments and the different times that the brain is engaged ( such as guessing ).

The purpose of this source is to inform readers how the brain functions in terms of when

memory is included. It explains the ways the memory is lost and gained and it also comes with a

lot of techniques that can be used for memory enhancement. The target audience for this source

would be for book readers who want to know how memory in the brain works.

This source is reliable because it was written by a person with a lifetime of science

reporting experience for well known companies and has been writing about health related topics

for years. The source was also published officially and recently. This source will help support

my essay by using information as to how the memory capabilities in the brain work.

Jonathan; Bishop, Lucy; Hughes, Matthe; Robinson, Rosie. “Review Strategies Boosting

Long-Term Learning” MindTools. August 2018. 27 Oct. 2019.

This source explains the different steps to retaining long term information and the key

strategies for helping to move the information learned from short to long term memory. Some

strategies include learning when to take breaks and testing oneself on content learned.

The purpose of this source is to help readers learn strategies for enhancing their memory

skills. The article includes seven different ways that could help readers with improving memory.

This article targets people who would like to learn methods for improving memory.

The article is credible because it was created by multiple people with college degrees and

was published by a blogging website that has been updated constantly. It is also and article that is

fairly recently published and the explanations for these steps are very thorough. I will use this

article to help define why some strategies work for long term memory retention and the benefits

to each of the strategies.

This source is a brochure and it contains information about myths and facts about certain

studying habits. Some aspects that may seem different are studying locations. As opposed to

studying in a quiet environment, try alternating locations. It explains that different ways of

studying will help better than others.

The purpose of this brochure is to help the targeted audience - students- to change up how

they should study. It helps these students with decreasing their stress levels as well as changing

how they learn and study. There are many key points and information in the brochure.

I believe this source is credible because it includes many references and supporting

research papers from other scholars. It included references from scholarly articles and even cited

quotes by other doctors. I believe this source will help me with my essay because it will allow

me to add learning styles and their definitions and uses.

Psychological Association, American Psychological Association, June 2016,

www.apa.org/science/about/psa/2016/06/learning-memory. 27 Oct. 2019.

This article is about the ways that practicing memory retrieval can upgrade long term

memory and a greater knowledge in learning. It has sections in the article called ‘Retrieval

Creates Learning’, ‘Retrieval Practice is Underappreciated as a Learning Strategy’, ‘Practicing

Retrieval Promotes Meaningful Learning’, and ‘Creating Retrieval-based Learning Activities’. It

then goes into depth explain each of these sections and why they're important.

The purpose of this article is to explain how memory works and the certain practices and

techniques used to enhance memory retrieval. It includes factual and tested data that was tested

on students to see how well they could retrieve their memories. I believe the target audience for

this article is for people who want factual evidence for strategies used to increase their chances to

improve long term memory. This could be used for anything from a test or quiz to a business

proposition.

I believe this article is credible because it includes factual evidence and references to

other scholarly articles. It was written by a person who has a lot of expertise and a PhD in

psychology. It was also funded by the National Science Foundation and the Institute of

Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education. I believe I can use this article to help

include powerful ways to improve memory and learning.

Roediger, Henry L., and Jeffrey D. Karpicke. “Repeated Retrieval during Learning Is the Key to

Enhancing Long-Term Retention.” PsycEXTRA Dataset, 2006. August 2007. 27 Oct.

2019.

This article reports experiments tested on subjects where they would learn a list of words

and then hopefully retain the information and test to see if they remembered it the week after.

After these tests, it concludes that the constant retrieval of the information at hand is the key to

long term retention.

The purpose of this article is to show and describe experiments devised that explained the

key to long term memory retention. This article most likely targets people who want to learn

more about memory retention.

This article is credible because it was created by Washington University and it is a

scholarly article, so it is peer reviewed by many others. This article helps me by including more

information to certain strategies I could incorporate into my essay dealing with being able to

remember things after a longer period of time.

Vaiana, Dominic. “How to Improve Your Memory: AComprehensive, Science-Based Guide”

CollegeInfoGeek. October 2019. 27 Oct. 2019.

This source includes techniques and strategies for improving memory retention, but it also

explains the sciences to each of the techniques and it also describes how memory itself works

and functions. The brain is very complex but in terms of memory, there are three different

processes and they each play a part in how memory is used. There is the sensory register, short

term memory, and long term memory.

The purpose of this article is to inform readers about how the mind and memory works in

their parts and the science based reasoning to why they work. It explains the science behind the

functions of the brain and some tips on how to improve your memory. This article is mainly for

people who want to know the reasonings as to why the brain works and how memory functions.

This article is credible because it was created by a person who frequently publishes his

own very thorough blogs into his website, has a large repertoire, and in his blogs he cites other

very well known sources that explains some things he says in his blogs. I believe this will help

me write my essay by including factual evidence to the abilities to brain and memory

functionality.

This article is a study created to test students’ retention by using different strategies and

each of them were studied. It shows us that one of the most effective ways to study is by doing

tested repetition. Using this repetition style will be a more efficient way of learning for long term

memory retention.

The purpose in writing this article was to inform readers about studies and experiments

tested showing the different efficiencies of each of them. This article most likely targets people

doing research. The source was written in a testing area that has experiments and real evidence

about studies.

This article is credible because it was written by people who have many degrees, and the

authors are multiple people. This is also a scholarly article, so it is peer reviewed. This article

helps to add some strategies that may be helpful to memory retention. I plan to use this

information in my essay to explain the successful tests done that pertains to the memory aspect

of my topic and how certain strategies of studying could be useful.
