6.3.9.3. Dental Concrete

The Contractor shall place dental concrete in exposed areas of broken, fractured , or
sheared portions of the foundation surface and at other locations as directed by the
Engineer. Dental concrete shall be used in areas too small to be satisfactorily filled with
foundation levelling concrete as determined by the Engineer.
Dental concrete shall be concrete conforming and being placed to the applicable provisions
ofClause 7 .4 .5 Dental Concrete ofChapter 7 Conventional Vibrated Concrete (CVC).
Placement of the Dental concrete may require the use of formwork. Formwork shall be
used at locations specified by the Engineer.
Designated voids shall be proper1 y excavated and c1eaned of all loose materials as
approved by the Engineer. Open joints, shear zones , and fractured areas shall be c1eaned to
a depth of at least two (2) times their width. Dental concrete shall be placed as required to
form a tight, un- fractured foundation surface against which the dam or concrete structure
may be placed.

6.3.9.4. Levelling Concrete

Levelling concrete shall be placed prior to the start of the placement of RCC. The mixture
proportions of the levelling concrete shall be within the ranges shown below:

Items Unit Mix Proportion

Nominal Maximum Size of Aggregate mm 50
Free water kg/m 3 110 - 130
Portland cement kg/m 3 70 - 90
Fly-ash kg/m3 170 - 130
Fine aggregate kg/m3 675 - 775
Coarse aggregate kg/m3 1,250 - 1,450

The foundation levelling concrete wi11 be designed by the Engineer to have similar
hardened properties to those of the RCC. The gradation of the aggregates wi11 be the same
as the RCC. The slump at the point of placement shall be 40土20mm.
Requirements for mixing, transportation, placement and vibration of the levelling concrete
are those specified for the conventional mass concrete in the pertinent Chapter 7
“ Conventional Vibrated Concrete (CVC)".

6.3.9.5. Preparing Previously Placed Levelling Concrete and Concrete Surfaces

In the initial stage of setting, but before the final setting of the concrete, the surface of the
