LATHE TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES
CENTRE

is used to manufacture cylindrical shapes from

a range of materials including; steels and
plastics. . This type of lathe is controlled by a
person turning the various handles on the top
slide and cross slide in order to make a
product / part.
CHUCKS

used extensively for

holding work for
machining operations.
COLLETS

is a subtype of chuck that forms a

collar around an object to be held
and exerts a strong clamping force
on the object when it is tightened,
usually by means of a tapered outer
collar. It may be used to hold a
workpiece or a tool
ANGLE PLATES

a work holding device used as a

fixture in metalworking. It also
may be used to hold the
workpiece square to the table
during marking-out operations and
is available for workpieces that
need to be inclined, usually
towards a milling cutter.
FACE PLATES

is a piece of material, usually

plastic or metal, used to fit
over a device's components.
It is mainly used for
protection and for enhancing
the design and appearance of
the device.
MANDRELS

are tool components that are used

to grip or clamp the material being
machined or other moving tool
components. These arbors are
used to bend the exhaust pipes for
automobiles and in the production
of molten glass, metal rings,
threaded rods, and furniture legs.
C ATCH PLATES AND
C ARRIERS

Carriers are also known as driving

dogs and used to drive the
workpiece when it is held between
two centres. These are attached to
the end of the workpiece by a set
screw. Catch plates are either
screwed or bolted to the nose of
the threaded, stock spindle.
DIFFERENT LATHE MACHINE
OPERATIONS
TURNING

operation of removing the excess

material from the workpiece to
produce a cylindrical surface to
the desired length.
FACING

operation of reducing the length of

the workpiece by feeding the
perpendicular to the lathe axis.
KNURLING

operation of obtaining a diamond

shape on the workpiece for the
gripping purpose
THREAD CUTTING

helical grooves are formed

on the out surface of the
workpiece. The workpiece is
rotating between the two
centres i.e., live centre and
dead centre os the lathe.
CHAMFERING

operation of getting a bevelled

surface at the edge of a cylindrical
workpiece. It helps to avoid
damage to the sharp edges and
protect the operation getting hurt
during other operations and helps
screw nuts easily on bolts.
POLISHING

performed after filing to

improve the surface quality
of the workpiece. Polishing
with successively finer grades
of emery cloth after filing
results in a very smooth,
bright surface.
GROOVING

process of reducing the

diameter of a workpiece
over a very narrow surface.
SPINNING

process of forming a thin

sheet of metal by revolving
the job at high speed and
pressing it against a
headstock spindle.
SPRING WINDING

process of making a coiled spring

by passing a wire around a mandrel
which is revolved on a chuck or
between centres.
FORMING

process of turning a convex,

concave or of any irregular shape.
LATHE MACHINE OPERATIONS
PERFORMED WITH CHUCK OR
FACEPLATE
DRILLING

producing a cylindrical hole

in a workpiece.
REAMING

operation of finishing and sizing a

hole which has been already drilled
or bored.
BORING

operation of enlarging the

hole which is already drilled,
punched or forged.
COUNTERBORING

operation of enlarging the

end of the hole through a
certain distance.
TAPPING

operation of cutting internal

threads of small diameter
using a multipoint cutting
tool called the tap.
UNDERCUTTING

done at the end of an

internal thread or a
counterbore to provide
clearance for the tool or any
part.
PARTING-OFF

normally used to remove

the finished end of a
workpiece from the bar
stock that is clamped in the
chuck.
LATHE MACHINE OPERATIONS
WITH SPECIAL ATTACHMENTS
GRINDING

removing metal in the form

of minute chips by feeding
the work against a rotating
abrasive wheel known as the
grinding wheel.
MILLING

operation of removing metal

by feeding the work against a
rotating cutter having
multiple cutting edges.
