LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 5

I. Objective
Solving routine and non-routine problems involving the area of a circle.
(M5ME-IVb-75)

II. Prerequisite Skills

 Formula for the area of a circle in square meters and centimeters
 Measuring the diameter and radius of the circle
 Problem Solving

III. Subject Matter

Skill: Solving problem involving area of a circle
References: K to 12 Grade 5 Curriculum Guide, LM Math 5 pages 294-301, TG
Math 5 pages114-115
Materials: cutouts of circles, tape measures, chart, real circular objects like paper
plate, ice, wall clock, stand fan, cream cup or any circular objects
Value: Helpfulness and Cooperation

IV. Instructional Procedures

A. Preliminary Activities
1. Drill

Complete the table below.

Circle Radius Diameter
A 25m
B 14cm
C 33m
D 19cm
E 36m

2. Review
A. Identify the parts of a circle C .
A B
.
D
1. Line segment AB is called __________?
2. Line segment CD is called __________?
3. The measure of the region enclosed by the circle is called _________?
B. Review the steps in solving word problems.
3. Motivation
Name any round objects inside the classroom or any round object that you
brought on your assignment. Show the diameter and the radius. Write the names of the
actual objects you found in the room.
B. Developmental Activities
1. Presentation

Group Activity

Group 1 & 2
Instruct the pupil to bring out the materials that they brought like paper plate, ice
cream cup cover or any circular object. Let pupils measure the diameter of each
circular object.
What are the different objects you have seen inside the classroom?
What are the different circular objects you have brought?
Are all circular objects you brought has the same measurement?
What value is developed when you perform the activity?

2. Performing Activities
Divide the class into four groups. Group 1 & 2 will join together and will be given
cutouts of a circle with the dimension at the back of the cutouts. Indicate those
measures on the drawing. Let the pupils measure the diameter. Divide the diameter
by 2 to get the radius. Tell the pupils that the value of π is approximately 3.14 and

that the formula in finding the area of a circle is A= π

Group 1 & 2

. . .

r = 5 dm r = 3 cm r – 20 cm
d = _______ d = _____ d = _____

Group 3 & 4
Solve for the area of the circle. Ask the leader to report their answers.

3. Processing Activities
After the presentation of the groups, ask:
 How did you find the activity?
 How did you go about the task?
 What value is developed in performing the activity?
 What did you do with the objects before getting their areas?
 How did you solve for the area?
4. Summarizing the Lesson
What are the steps in finding the area of a circle?
How do you solve for a circle’s area when radius is given? When the diameter is
given?

The formula in finding the area of a circle if the radius is given: A = π2r
The formula in finding the area of a circle if the diameter is given: A = πd
The formula in finding the area of a circle is,
A= π

5. Applying to the New and Other Situations

Group activity
Divide the class in two groups. Give each group an activity card with problems
written on it. Let each group post their work on the board. The leader will report to the
class the answer and solution of the problem.

Activity Card 1
Draw a circle based on the given situation and indicate the measurement given.

Problem 1: What is the area of a circular garden whose diameter is 15

meters?
Activity Card 2
Draw a circular design out of the given situation. Show your solution on the board.
Problem 2: You are making a design for a circular button. Your design
fits on a circle with a radius of 3 centimeters. How much area will be
covered by your design?
C. Assessment

Group 1 and 2
A. Write the data required to complete the chart. Use π = 3.14.

Diameter Radius Area

1. 13 cm
2. 18 m
3. 20 cm

Group 3 and 4

B. Solve the following problems.

1. The circle has a radius of 14 m. Find its area.
2. A circular clock has a diameter of 40 cm. What is the area of the clock?
3. A circular fountain has a radius of 12 meters. What is the area of the circular
fountain?
4. The diameter of the drum is 70 cm. What is the area covered when the drum
stands?
5. Ana’s circular bed cover has a diameter of 2.25 m. How many square meters is it?
