WHAT IS E-COMMERCE?
One of the inherent problems with the technology related terminologies is that these terms
coin up quite earlier than the development of their definition. Besides, the world of
information technology is so dynamic that one definition given at one point of time appears
to be inappropriate at another point of time.
Same is the case with E-Commerce. With the rapid growth in the trend of e-commerce, across
different industries, each defined it in their own way. However, a very basic definition might
be to perform the business using telecommunication and/or computer networks. In addition
to this, the narrow concept of ecommerce restricts it only to those commercial activities that
involve some transaction (exchange of values) and thus they define it as buying and selling
over internet. On the other hand, a broader definition of this term includes a greater range of
activities under its domain.
For the purpose of this paper, the definition of ecommerce has been defined as follows:
In the banking perspective, the more commonly used terms are that of e-banking or m-
banking. In terms of their purpose, these terms are the off-shoots of e-commerce itself, applied
for the product or service or information selling (refer to the definition of operation
definition of ecommerce in previous section to understand what does selling mean in this
paper) related to banking.
Thus, one way or other, if a bank shows the balance in the account of customer on his request
through SMS (short messaging service), even it is information selling. As this service of
providing information was the part of agreement between the customer and the bank when he
opened the account or subscribed for the service.
In this perspective, the e-commerce products in banking can be divided into three broad
dimensions, in terms of the nature of product/service/information. These three types are:
• Internet Banking
• Mobile Banking
• Foreign Remittances
However, this is not the only possible way to categorize. There may be other ways too. These
classifications are based on the existing services offered by the Pakistani Banks.
• Develop a description of the services offered by each of the bank in such a way that it
serves as the comprehensive collection of most of the e-commerce products available in
the banking sector of Pakistan, so that comparative analysis can be carried out.
• This report will be covering the banks listed in the “Statistics on the Scheduled Banks
in Pakistan” (June 2007), Appendix II. (Excluding specialized banks)
• The two media for collecting the information were the websites of respective banks
and telephone calls. Those banks which did not had enough information on their
website, were called on June 16, 2008 between 5 and 6 PM.
• At the same time, those banks were also contacted which did not mention at all in
their websites about e-banking.
