vandalism
POLICE and council staff have removed memorial benches from
Alexandra Park following a spate of vandalism in recent weeks.
Groups of teens have been hanging around the bowling green,
annoying bowlers during the day and creating a mess at night.
PCSO Keith Bartlett has been attempting to keep a lid on the problem by
speaking to the lads involved, with some success.
It seems that they have been dragging the wooden benches to under
the shelter near the bowling green so they can sit around without
getting wet.
A total of 18 memorial benches are being moved into temporary storage
over the winter so that there are fewer places for the groups to sit.
PCSO Bartlett said: “The fixed benches which are bolted down will
remain but we’ve had to move the other benches with plaques on until
the weather improves in the spring.
“The other night there were groups sat around and someone set fire
to a bench. They also left a huge mess near the bowling green which
we’ve had to clean up.
“Someone within the group is also believed to have kicked in car mirrors
on Canadian Avenue and Knowsley Road, so we will be speaking to
him.”
PCSO Bartlett admitted that moving the benches was not the answer to
beating vandalism but he said that it will make it harder for the groups
to hang around under the shelter.

not an uncommon practice for clergymen
to do this.
The 1841 Census shows 16 boys between
