managerial positions. Although all managers perform the same functions of planning, organizing,
leading and controlling, there are hierarchies among them.

Organizational Differentiation Styles:

Companies often use one or more styles of differentiation to establish order and structure to
their organization. Vertical differentiation involves the installation of a "chain of command"
among employees and managers. Horizontal differentiation separates workers by their assigned
tasks, such as accounting, sales or computer networking.

Vertical Differentiation

Work Specialisation:

Division of labour is an inescapable component of the advanced industrial system.

Work specialisation is a term used to describe the extent to which work is divided into smaller
units which is completed by a single individual. it includes division of labor in which a single
person completes repetitively a single step of the complete task. At United auto Industries (pvt)
LTD, The manager handles any problems with workers, customers, or the items. They also handle
keeping the showroom in working condition by making sure the employees do their jobs.
Work specialisation is high in UNITED because they hire specialised worker for each department
to maintain the quality of product. In plant where assembling of parts occurs every person is
specialised in his work. UNITED believes work specialisation is the best way to improve efficiency.

CHAIN OF COMMAND

Chain of command-refers to the unbroken line of authority that starts from the top level of the
organization to the lower level. It shows the relationship between individuals working in an
organization and to whom they report to and who they are responsible for. It works on the
principle of unity of command which states that worker should have only one superior to report
to in order to avoid confusion. It is an increasingly obsolete phenomenon in the dynamic firms
that do not follow the strict hierarchical organization structure.
11

United auto Industries (pvt) Ltd has a tall chain of command as it consists of 5 regional managers
and there exists one assistant manager to each regional manager. Four Sale managers come
under regional managers.

SPAN OF CONTROL

Span of control-refers to the number of subordinates working directly under a manager. span of
control can be:
 wide-with a larger number of subordinates working under one manager, or ,
 Narrow- with lesser number of subordinates working under a manger.
United auto industries (pvt) ltd has a Narrow span of control because 4-6 people work under the
one Lower level manager. And there is no concept of dual bosses because each person reports
only to his respective manager and managers’ report to upper level.

CENTRALISATION AND DECENTRALISATION

Centralization and decentralization refers to the degree to which decisions making authority is
distributed within an organization.
Centralization-is when the entire decision making authority is in the hands of the central
management of the firm and no lower level involvement is required in making decisions for the
firm. Decentralization-is when the decision making authority is delegated to the managerial
levels just below the top level i.e. not all the decision making authority lies in the hands of the
top level management . In united Auto industries (Pvt) ltd mostly from top to bottom
management is involved in the decision making process. In decisions like new leadership, new
model dealer credit all the decision are taken out with the involvement of middle managers. In
such decisions middle line managers have authority to take decision on the behalf of the top
managers. Whereas the pricing decision is completely taken by the top manager; Mr Zaiullah Ch.
(director marketing & sales). So the pricing decisions are centralised whereas other decision are
decentralised.
12

FORMALISATION
Formalization-refers to the extent to which jobs are standardized within an organization .it refers
to the degree to which the employee has to follow the given pattern to do his/her job.
A highly formalized job-is when the worker knows exactly what is asked from him, he cannot add
any innovations to performing the task and there are a great many organizational rules to follow
and a given set of procedures to follow. In united Formalization is very high because it is tightly
controlled by Top management who defines rules, policies and procedures for every work
activities. In rules and policies UNITED sets the limits and boundaries for lower level
management and sets the procedures for each and every work.

complaining parties and resolve the issue as soon as possible and then further guide the
employees on how to prevent from such issues and resolve them on their own whenever they
encounter with such issues again in future. The overall performance is evaluated by the end of
month and the employees are then notified if there are any missing places or any missing areas
where the lack of focus is observed. United motors also conducts training sessions for all those

sales. The top managers of the most efficient workforce are provided with bonuses to maintain
the role of a good manager.
15

EMPLOYEE CHECK AND BALANCE

The organization does keep a check and balance on the employees by monitoring their
performance which is done by their respective managers who supervise them and if any
employee is suspected of not progressing well they are sent a show cause notice in which they
are demanded the cause of inefficient performance, the company tries to cooperate with them
and tries to resolve their issues so that the performance of the company is not effected.

yearly sales of more than 400,000 units all across Pakistan. United is also considered the No.1
National selling brand of Pakistan. At the initial stage United started off by entering the 2
wheeler industry market and then based on their sales and performance successfully entered
the 3 wheeler market. United is also considered as the market leader of three wheeler industry
(RICKSHAW). United recently entered into the Horizon of four wheeler industry by launching
their first National car of Pakistan named as United Bravo. More than 1000 units of Bravo are
already on road according to the regional sales manager of United Motorcycles. United is one
of the top brands that are available across all regions of the country, recently starting Export to
Afghanistan. United Motors encourage their employees to improve their performance and also
bring advancements in the hierarchy as per needs so that the company can continue its
operations smoothly without any disputes. United is looking forward to making their
distribution network stronger and bringing new advanced units in the near future.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The dealers of united motors are uneducated as they belong to rural

16

Areas which is a bad repute for United as they lack professionalism,

United instead of expanding should also focus on training of dealers

And not only employees. All the dealers must be trained in order to

Represent a good name for the company and to create good customer

Relationship. United being the leader of three wheeler industry should

Focus on innovating the Rickshaw design as they are following the same

Old design over the past years.
