Chapter I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

A school is not just any place where students learn and discover new knowledge, it is where

right manners and good discipline is conducted. By good discipline, students are molded into equal

individuals that build respect towards others. Hence, educational institutions provide policies as

existing guidelines for students to follow. One would be the implementation of wearing a student

Identification or the ‘No ID, No Entry’ which this study is all about.

Blog of Specialist ID, Inc. US (2019) posted that schools throughout the United States are

increasingly relying upon ID card systems to keep their students, faculty members, and visitors as

safe as possible every day. It is best practice that schools execute in order to ensure one of their

main priority---student and staffs’ safety. It also helps visitors stand out and be easily identified

and monitored.

Blog of One Source Security and Automation, Inc. (2016) posted that the National Center

of Education Statistics stated that schools who require their students wear ID badges are less than

10 percent. Having a student ID with you helps in cases of emergency as the individuals’

information would be located on his/her ID.

However, as of past years here in Magallanes National High School (MNHS), wearing a

Student ID before entering campus premises is of weak implementation as it is not much likely

followed by the students. Slow production is a factor that lays evident on as to why such policy is

not quite effective. Students that have already received their IDs are wearing them but they are not

as many. That is why on some school events or be it just a normal day on campus, there are cases
2

where outsiders can enter. Though the school security guard is doing a great job but with the

massive population of MNHS students, it would be hard to determine who belongs and who does

not, especially without student IDs. But even though this state has been going on for years, this

policy continues to exist even if it’s not that strictly implemented. This policy adds up different

views from students and to further understand it is the aim of this study.

Statement of the problem

This study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the demographic profile of the students in terms of the following:

1.1 Age

1.2 Sex

1.3 Strand/Section

2. What is the importance of wearing student ID?

3. What are the perceptions of the students on the strict implementation of wearing
student IDs in the campus?

of the Grade 11 Senior high school students.

Significance of the Study

The aim of this study is to know the perceptions of the Grade 11 students on the strict

implementation of Magallanes National High School on wearing student ID. This study means to

contribute beneficiaries and benefits that may be helpful for the:

Students. To let them know the importance and purpose of wearing student IDs inside the

campus.

Teachers. For them to have the advantage of having to recognize and easily familiarize

students that roam inside the campus.

School Administrations. This study may help the school in improving, strengthening, and

taking action on the said implementation and effectivity of student ID towards the students and

school security. Also, to contribute information on the effectivity of the said school policy.

Future Researchers. This study may be used as alternate reference for future studies that

are related to this research.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

This research is about the strict implementation of wearing a student ID on campus. This

study only involves the Grade-11 Senior High School students in all strands of Magallanes

National High School, choosing 9 students to participate in the interview with open ended
4

questions prepared. This study has been conducted from January to March of the school year 2018-

2019.

This research has encountered different problems like having no printer to print papers or

finding a printing service that has a cheap offer. Also, mostly of the participants that we would

interview would turn down our offer in interviewing them which would mean the delay of

collection of data and as a result, we would have to redo our sampling as substitute to the students

who have refused our offer.

Definition of terms

Student Identification (ID) - it is an identity card produced through students as a way of

identifying them. The action or process of identifying someone or something or the fact of being

identified.

Strict Implementation - it is of putting something into strong effect, on this study, it refers to the

strict implementation of the student ID.

Policy - it is guidelines or rules that is used in schools as a part of disciplining students. A course

or principle of action adopted or proposed by government, party, business or individual.

Participants - The grade 11 students of the senior high school are interviewed to for the data of

this study.

Perceptions- the state of being or process of becoming aware of something through the senses.

School- is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces and learning

environments for the teaching of students under the direction of teachers.

5

Right manners- Manners are something used every day to make a good impression on others and

to feel good about oneself. Being polite and courteous means considering how others are feeling.

Discipline- the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior using punishment to

correct disobedience

Review of Related Literature

This chapter shows the ideas and concepts with relation to our study. We’ve used different

sources that we’ve researched in the internet that would help in regards with our study of the

perceptions of the Grade 11 students of Magallanes National High School on the strict

implementation of wearing student ID.

Related Studies

Students don’t like being told what to do, but ID’s aren’t meant to make students’ lives

harder. They’re a simple precaution that helps faculty and staff keep track of students who

constantly shuttle between two campus and career centers. Faculty can’t be expected to put a name

to every one of the 1,800 faces in the school. With the safety in schools a continuous problem, it

is important that teachers and other staff members know who is walking the halls of the school.

With ID’s on, students are telling the staff who the students are and that they belong. But, one can

only go so far. Although a number of students switch ID’s, cover up their face with stickers, or

simply don’t wear an ID, it’s easy to tell when someone doesn’t belong, said Principal Jeffrey

Kajs. Wearing an ID helps students practice good safety habits that all students should become

familiar with (Lewisville High School, Farmers' Harvest student newspaper, 2014).

The U.S Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics (2018), schools

use a variety of practices and procedures to promote the safety of students, faculty, and staff. Use

of various safety and security procedures differed by school level during the 2015–16 school year.

For example, greater percentages of public primary schools and public middle schools than of
7

public high schools-controlled access to school buildings and required faculty and staff to wear

badges or picture IDs.

Blog of One Source Security and Automation, Inc. (2016) posted that when an ID badge is

present, everyone knows at a glance who belongs and who does not. The ID badge should be easily

seen and presented to any school staff member or person of authority seeking identification. This

can be especially important for emergency personnel who may not be familiar with the students

but will know who is who at a glance in an emergency situation. Not only in emergency situations

is it important for students to wear ID badges, but on a day to day basis teachers and staff can

identify students. The use of a student ID badge authorizes a student to be on campus, increasing

site security while swiftly detecting unauthorized visitors. Each school should ensure safety and

security for all staff and students as a top priority each and every day. Wearing identification has

become a security “best practice” for schools. Access control and video surveillance, along with

security glass laminates for schools can provide a complete security package to protect students,

teachers and staff.

Research Methodology

Research Design

This research is done in a qualitative method where the views and opinions of the

participants in grade 11 students of Magallanes National High School is collected as datum to

analyze in conducting the said research. It only aims to gather information about the perceptions

of the students on the strict implementation of the student ID.

Research Locale

By the permission granted, our study has been approved to be conducted in Magallanes

National High School of Magallanes Agusan Del Norte, located at the Purok-6, Brgy. Sto. Niño

Magallanes Agusan Del Norte. The school has 5 academic track, namely HUMSS, STEM, ABM,

ICT and COOKERY. The respondent of this study is the Grade 11 students of the Senior High

School, where we have chosen 9 participants.

9

Figure 1. Magallanes National High School Figure 2. Magallanes Agusan Del Norte

Sample and Sampling Technique

The researchers of this study have wisely used a strategy of choosing participants without

being biased or having to select certain participants. The population belonging on the Grade 11

level are a total of 294 students. We have carefully used a simple random sampling of probability

sampling where we have listed all the strands and listed all the students in each section and picking

one or two participants. As a result of the sampling, we have acquired 9 participants.

Ethical Consideration

As an insurance to the participants, we have prepared consents to ensure them the safety of

their identity and that not a single harm will be caused if they accept our offer of making them as

one of our participants. We have told them how their agreement on considering to agree on our

consent would mean they fully understood our study and that their views and opinions would be

documented in hidden codes.

Research Instrumentation

In conducting our research, we have prepared open ended questions and approached our

participants to inquire them about their understandings as an important information for our study.

The answers gathered from the participants is listed where we have recorded each answer for

interpretation purposes later on.

Data collection procedures

10

In collecting data, we have written a letter as a permission for conducting our research of

which we have addressed to the principal and head teachers. After the permission granted,

questionnaires are then created basing on the general problem of the study. We have then used

simple random sampling which is a probability sampling technique of choosing students without

being biased where we have come to acquire 9 participants. An informed consent is then carefully

written as a letter made for the participants in agreeing to participate in our research. With this,

before having to start our interview, a briefing is held towards each of them to let them know about

our study. As an easy documentation, we have then recorded their responses where we have coded

each of their identity as a part of our ethical procedure.

Transcripts and Matrices

The gathered answers from participants are then translated in an understandable way from

recordings done from every participant. All of it are then placed on a matrix where each question

asked is put on a table and is prepared to interpret.

11

Chapter IV

Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data

The tables presented on this chapter are the matrices where the responses of the participants

are transcribed and comprehended in an order of which it is easier to understand. Each table has a

following summary as an additional way of making it comprehensive enough.

Chapter V

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Summary of Findings

The participants interviewed are a majority of girls with the ages of 16, 17 and 20. All the

participants have said that the importance of having a student ID is for students to be recognized.

They’ve all said how having an ID alongside with a person can help in terms of identification

especially in emergency cases. Also stating that having an ID have also saved them money on

transportation fares and money withdrawals. As for their views about the strict Implementation of

the student ID, majority have agreed due to the fact that it has been helpful for them and that it can

be a good discipline for the students, as of the rest that disagreed, they have said how it is a

hindrance, something that can easily be forgotten and that MNHS won’t be needing its student IDs

to be strictly implemented because it is not a private school.

Conclusion

On the data gathered, the student ID of Magallanes National High School should thereby

be strictly implemented because it has given good and positive effects to the majority of students

which are girls and their answers have proven how a simple student ID could be helpful. A student

ID has an important role not just for the students but as well as for the school’s security and

neatness. This research has led us to know that the students are in favor of making it strongly into

policy other than just by simply implementing it. Its production is of slow process but given the

results of this study, with respect for the school’s budget, this should at least serve as a helpful

basis for the student IDs implementation.

16

Recommendation

For Students. Fellow students of those that have already received their ID should wear them to at

least put an encouraging notice to the school on putting ID into strict implementation. The students

should also be raising awareness on the importance of the student identification and ponder on the

thought of making its strict implementation happen.

For Teachers. Encourage the students (those that have received their IDs) on wearing their

respective IDs every day. They should be a model for the young students and develop an image as

a good sight for the students to be aspired of, this way, they’ll be encouraged to follow the teachers.

For School Administration. The school should consider the results that this study has presented

of which majorities of the students are in favor of having a strict implementation of student ID

therefore, there should be a consideration of creating a policy, specifically the ‘No ID, No Entry’

policy.

For Future Researchers. To the students of the future, an enhancement of this study would be of

good suggestion. Also, having to suggest other related topics of our study could be of helpful

advice.
