Canubida, Hannah
Proverbs provide an insightful window into a community’s lifestyle, history,
and culture. Proverbs handed down from generation to generation through oral
culture. They are still widely used and have become a part of everyday speech.
God helps those who help themselves. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.
- American
This proverb means instead of waiting for something good, work hard to
achieve your goal and the loudest problem is one that attracts attention. This is
related to the culture of the USA. Independent people who can take care of
themselves and improve their own situation are admired and respected.
Americans believe that it is good that adolescent children should be independent
and should not depend on other people. Parents let their children leave and be
independent in as early as 18 years old.
It's the nail that sticks out that is hammered. - Japanese
This proverb applies in so many ways in Japanese society. Those who are
different are being called out. In japan, individualism is discouraged. Those who
cannot apply the cultural norms at that specific time and place will be labeled as
nails sticking out. On the other hand, those who hammers the nails executes the
order dictated by the consensus. It is well known that those who are jealous and
envious of others tend to harm or hinder them so they won't feel so bad about
themselves. If you try to be different or too good at anything then you can't be
part of the group. You may be useful but you'll be seen as a weirdo.
No need to know the person, only the family - Chinese
What you see on the person doesn't define how good her/his family is.
She/he may act nothing happens infront of anyone but when she/he was home, it
maybe much worst than we expected. According to Anthony Liccione on the
Difference Between a House and Home “Everyone needs a house to live in, but
a supportive family is what builds a home.” it means a home that creates by a
family with love, and support has a solid foundation and it makes the person's
mental and emotional healthy. For our common understanding, a family is the
one who educate its children to have good moral and discipline.
When spider webs unite, they can trap a lion. It takes a whole village to
raise a child. - African
It means it cost unity of everyone to get what we wanted or defeat those who
are much bigger and stonger than us. It is like a volleyball team, it needs offenser
and defenser to keep the game in play. Unity defined as working together
although we may have different capabilities but if we combine those we could
achive bigger ones that is unimaginable to happen.
