EEL 4205 - Assignment 1 due Monday, January 21, 2019

1. A long solenoid coil has its length much greater than its diameter as shown in Fig. The
magnetic field inside the coil may, therefore, be considered uniform. The coil has 150 turns,
its length is 30 cm, and its diameter is 2.5 cm. A current I = 25 A is supplied to the coil.
Neglect the magnetic field outside the coil.
a. Determine the magnetic field intensity H and the magnetic flux density B inside the
solenoid.
b. Determine the inductance of the coil.

2. A toroid has a circular cross section as shown in Fig. It is made from cast steel with a
relative permeability of 2500. Its outer diameter is 24 cm, and its inner diameter is 16 cm.
The magnetic flux density in the core is 1.25 T measured at the mean diameter of the toroid.
a. Find the current that must be supplied to the coil, which consists of 250 turns.
b. Determine the magnetic flux in the core.
c. A 10-mm air gap is cut across the toroid. Determine the current that must be supplied
to the coil to produce the same value of magnetic flux density as in part (a).

[Result: I = 40.8 A, part c]

3. A ferromagnetic circuit has a magnetic core with infinitely high relative permeability. It has
three legs, and air gaps of 2 mm and 1 mm are cut from sections A and C, respectively, as
shown in Fig. A coil is wound on the center leg B, and it has 200 turns and a resistance of
2.5 Ω. The magnetic core has a 5 x 5 cm uniform cross-sectional area. A DC voltage is
applied to the coil.

a. Determine the voltage that will produce a flux density of 0.75 T in the right leg C, which
contains the 1-mm air gap.

Page 1
b. Find the magnetic flux in the other two legs of the core.

[Result: V = 7.5V]

4. For the electromagnetic system in Fig. below, the polarity of the voltage source V1 is
reversed so that the current I1 flows in the opposite direction. The magnetic core has
infinite relative permeability. Determine the expressions for
a. The magnetic flux in each of the three legs
b. The flux linkage of each coil
c. The self-inductance of each coil
d. The mutual inductance

5. The magnetic circuit shown in Fig. has an infinitely permeable magnetic core. The following
are given:
g1 = 5 mm A1 = 5 cm2 N1 = 80 turns
g2 = 5 mm A2 = 5 cm2 N2 = 100 turns
g3 = 10 mm A3 = 10 cm2 N3 = 125 turns
A current of 12 A flows in the first coil, N1. The second and third coils, N2 and N3,
respectively, are unexcited.
Determine the flux densities in each of the air gaps g1, g2, and g3.

[Result: B3 = 40 mT]

6. The wire shown in Fig. (see problem 1-10 in Chapman) is moving in the presence of a
magnetic field (B=0.2T into the page). Determine the magnitude and direction of the
induced voltage in the wire for the following angles between the wire and the vertical axis:
0°, 45°, 90°, 135° and 180°.

Page 2
Now, assume that the wire is also rotating in the shown plane, clockwise around its center
point, with frequency f=1Hz. Write the expression for the induced voltage as a function of
time.

7. (Problem 1-17 in Chapman) Figure shows the core of a simple dc motor. The magnetization
curve for the metal in this core is given in the second figure. Assume that the cross-
sectional area of each air gap is 18 cm2 and that the width of each air gap is 0.05 cm. The
effective diameter of the rotor core is 4 cm.

The magnetization curve for the core

a. It is desired to build a machine with as great a flux density as possible while avoiding
excessive saturation of the core. What would be a reasonable maximum flux density for this
core?
b. What would be the total flux in the core at the flux density from a?
c. The maximum possible field current for this machine is 1 A. Select a reasonable number of
turns of wire to provide the desired flux density while not exceeding the maximum available
current.

[Result: There is a range of solutions for this problem. N=1000 turns for one of them.]
