A human rights and political activist;

Asma Jahangir

Introduction
Asma Jahangir was a Pakistani human rights lawyer .she was born on 27 January 1952 at Lahore .Her
father name was Malik ghulam jilani. He was a government employee Malik Ghulam Jilani was a
politician ,he was in the opposition and he talked about the human dignity and human freedom he was an
employee on a very good post when the first Martial law was imposed by the general Ayub Khan in
October 1958 at that time Malik ghulam jilani resigned his post saying that:

"I can't work in a place, where I can't read, where I can't think, where I can't speak my mind this is not
atmosphere in which I did like to work” so that's why he give resign to his post

Asma Jahangir got her early education from convent of Jesus and Mary School Lahore in 1960 and then
she received degree from Knarred College in 1978. In an interview she told about her LLB degree she
said that I was in a way, I married in the age of 22 years ,I didn't actually go to the law School because
when I went to law school they asked me that admission of the married women is not allowed so
therefore one of my friends studying law in the school attended their own classes after finishing the class
she came to my home and teach me ,she said that I am very thankful to my friend for being a lawyer

when Asma Jahangir completed her LLB education from Punjab University she was called to the Lahore
high Court in 1980 and then to the supreme court in 1982, Asma Jahangir is the Pakistani human rights
lawyer who serve two terms as a chairperson of the human Rights commission of Pakistan and was the
first woman president of the supreme Court bar association of Pakistan from 27 October 2010 to 31st
October 2012 she has fought to defend the human rights of women religious minorities and child labor in
Pakistan for over 40 years both in and out of the courtroom (dawn news..Lahore on sunday.11 Feb.

Asma Jahangir played a very important role in the field of human rights, religious minority and women
rights, child labor as well as worked against dictator`s she became a pro-democratic activist and was
jailed in 1983 for the participating in the moment for the Restoration of democracy which agitated
military dictator zia-ul-haq regime.

The Asma Jahangir was also active in 2007 lawyers movement for which she was put under the house
arrest Asma Jahangir was a brave, intelligent and brilliant women, she played very important role in every
activity like human rights ,Restoration of democracy and she achieved so many awards from the

On the international level Asma Jahangir has served as UN special repporteur on extra judicial, Asma
Jahangir has received halal-imtiaz and sitara-imtiaz and 2010 ,UNESCO bilbao prize among others , she
was also one of the thousand women nominated for the Nobel prize in 2005. Asma Jahangir win UN
human Rights prize for her fearless contribution to human rights

Asma Jahangir authorized the number of books and research paper including one of the critical issues of
hadood ordinance, she also criticize the countries institutions particularly the Pakistan army therefore the
Asma Jahangir opposed the hadood law because she said that hadood laws were not suitable for state
and she was against the “kisas law” diya law and half gahwai law. The council of Islamic ideology tried
to pass the law of adi gahwai but Asma jahangir stood up against the adhi gawahi because Asma Jahangir
always defended the secular mindset so that's why she did not believe on hadood law. in this case all the
religious groups were against her because they wanted the religious Islamic law introduced in the state
while on other hand Asma Jahangir strongly raise the voice for the equal rights for the women she said
that men and women both are equal, the women cannot be deprived from their fundamental rights (

A champion of democracy Asma Jahangir is the voices of marginalized form. From movement of law. She
inspired many to speak up and loudly

Outspoken human Rights activist Asma Jahangir criticized the


military role and involvement in politics and the judiciary roll over the year wondering why only
politicians were held accountable in Pakistan ,court should review judgment in the Panama case ,if the
army gets involved in the politics fingers will be raised, we will continue to stand against the weapons

Criticized judges for the never ruling against military or land mafia Asma Jahangir talking about the
recently announced judgment that disqualified Nawaz Sharif she called for the right of appeal to be given
in the case of fundamental rights i.e. those heard under article 184(3) of the constitution

Talking about inclusion of intelligence officials in the joint instigation team (JIT) asked with probing
money laundering allegations against Sharif family she asked rhetorically ,how the judges would feel of
member of t inter-services intelligence and military intelligence were included in the supreme judicial
council after the GIT report .it was claimed that the pml-n was Sicilian Mafia but unfortunately the courts
have never given the decision against the real Mafia. They even don't rule against the land mafia she said
advising Nawaz shreef to seek relief from the people ,she recommended that the ousted prime Minister
should come out into the streets and hold the public meetings in gawalmandi ,the mall road and GT road

While Asma Jahangir knows that the people did not wanted the nawaz shreef to be a prime minister of
Pakistan, Asma Jahangir also played important role in judiciary, Asma Jahangir was the advisor of
badshah Khan in the last year protest in Islamabad where Pashtoon tribes protested in Islamabad. In-this
protest Asma Jahangir delivered speeches .Asma Jahangir also supported the pashtoon tribes when the
people started to think pashtoons as terrorist ,she also raised the voice for pashtoons rights (Dawn news

Most of the people gave tributes to Asma Jahangir and most of the people did not like the Asma Jahangir
and Pakistan because people thought her to be a Indian agent, American agent, Western agent and
something else

the orthodox religious group and conservative people hated the Asma Jahangir because they thought she
was against the ideology of Pakistan, she was secular minded and Asma Jahangir supported women for
love marriage and court marriages if she is young while the religious group was against it because they
said that no Muslim women can love marriage without the permission of his (walii) guardian. and she
also highlighted this case in Lahore high Court and she succeeded (Taimur rehman feb 14 2018)

Asma Jahangir was also against dictatorship first she started her struggle against zia ul haq and then the
moment of restoration of democracy ,she was the first woman who started movement against dictators
indeed she fought against every military regime and struggled for democracy and civil supremacy, that's
certainly did not pleased the so called patriotic elements.har campaign against post disappearances and
her criticism on security agencies role have also been used to question her patriotism (Dawn October 22

Asma Jahangir also started complain for the normalization of relation between India and Pakistan and had
also become a major issue for the two nationalist brigade, they also use this to question her patriotism and
old newspaper pictures of her with Indian extremist Hindu leader Bal Thackeray resurfaced on social
media though she had met him in her capacity as the United Nation special rapporteur on freedom of
religion, investigating violence against Muslim in India ,Asma also raised her voice against the Indian
atrociticties in occupied Kashmir

She had a long been targeted by the extremist Islamic group for her unrelenting complain for women
rights and the misuse of the blasphemy laws. This is also being used against her social media campaign
she was never intimidated by the extremist onslaught despite the serious threat to her life (dawn

As for about my topic is concerned regarding to explore the life of Asma Jahangir, it has been an
interesting task to gather information, the process of collecting data about the life of Asma Jahangir i.e.
from the birth to her death has considerably increase my knowledge regarding information illustrated in
the introduction about the family background and political history of Asma Jahangir the available material

while collecting information about the life of Asma Jahangir in my research work, I tried my best to
explore the every aspect of her life ,efforts have been made to cover whole life but during the collection
of information the only thing that astonished me was about her sentiments about the religion ,no data was
available on her religious views she was under the influence of education attended by Christian schools
and according to doctor taimur rehman she was in defense of secularism and so many religious groups
Argued that she was against the ideology of Pakistan

Objectives of the study


To explore the political and social life of Asma jahangir to strengthen my knowledge and to learn the
research methodology

Conclusion
after gathering and analysing the whole data it comes to conclude that whole life of Asma Jahangir is full
of efforts for poor class and stability of democracy in the country only thing which imparts negatively is
quite manifested from her criticism on religion

in last paragraph I want to justify my topic in few words that”” Asma jahangir was a fearless voice of
justice for women children and the most marginalised disposed and discriminated globally she never lost
a sense of as a woman he contributed alot to moderate enlightment in Pakistan so therefore, I want to
highlight from the services as a role of women contribution for women rights
