PERIOD OF ACTIVISM (1970-1972)

BELIEFS DURING THE PERIOD OF ACTIVISM


* the democratic government is stable and that it is only the people running the government who is at
fault. * socialism or communism should replace democracy, thus, armed groups were formed to bring
down the democratic form of government. - resulted in the declaration of Martial Law in 1972.

~ In this period, According to Pociano Pineda (Filipino Writer), Youth activism was due to domestic and
worldwide causes.

~ The youth moved to seek reforms and became completely rebellious during this period.

~ The youth who were fired with nationalism in order to emphasize the importance of their petitions.

It is not only the society that has initiated in this period but in relation to its literature also:

~ Campus newspapers shows rebellious emotions

~ The once aristocratic writers developed awareness for


society

~ Bomba Films – that discredited our ways as Filipinos

~ They wrote on Placards in red paint (Bloody Placards)


of the word “MAKIBAKA!” (to dare!)
~ Palanca Memorial Awards (Est. 1950) for short story,
Poetry and one-act play –

~ Persons who participated in the period of activism:

1 Rolando Tinio - wrote his poetic collection: Rage and Ritual, and Sitsit sa Kuliglig
2 Rogelio Mangahas - 1st prize winner for his collection of poems, “Mga Duguang Plakard”
3 Efren Abueg - his works appeared in magazines such as liwayway,bulaklak, tagumpay and
homelife
4 Rio Alma - Second successful modernist movement in Filipino poetry together with Rogelio
and Teo Antonio
5 Clemente Bautista and many more.
