Psychology in my Life

Introduction

Psychology is one discipline that is quite vital for all aspects of life.

Absolutely no career discipline can stand out without application of some

psychological background knowledge. The discipline becomes more bolded

when referring to problem identification and possible solutions in business

fields. Similarly, in medicine, psychology knowledge is required in

understanding of the clients and the work environment itself. Various

psychological concepts such as biological, cognitive, behavioural,

psychodynamic, and humanistic are more important in different career

practices. Recent researches have shown that these psychological concepts

form the back born of any career, mostly those career practices dealing

with the human beings.

Most particularly, I have found the concepts more appealing in the

field of pharmacy that is my major. Ever since I was a toddler, I had the

urge to pursue business accounting or medicine in pharmacy. Thereafter, I

decided to settle in medical pharmacy due to the influence I got from my

mother who is a professional pharmacist. I grew up admiring whatever she

was doing as a pharmacist and through that I found myself developing

interest of being like her. After attending a college school in France, I

decided to come to the United States to study pharmacy as my wish

demanded. This happens despite my mother being the only pharmacist in

the family with the rest being engineers including Dad. Concepts of

psychology are therefore, observed protruding in the family’s manner of

career selections. The involvement of psychological concepts in various

careers selection and practices is something that can be said to be

inevitable and determines the biological, cognitive, behavioural,

psychodynamic, and humanistic developments (Licht, Hull and Ballantyne,

2016). This paper therefore, aims at establishing relationship of these

psychological concepts with the various career practices, specifically in my

career and future life as a pharmacist.

Psychological Concepts and My Life

Biological

Considering the various career practices in our family, the biological

concept of psychology in terms of traits distribution is evidenced. As the

saying goes; like father like son, and like mother like daughter, Dad being

an engineer, all my brothers also became engineers and I becoming

pharmacist after my mother’s influence. This can be said to have been

brought about by the attachment of children to their parents, where boys

get attached to their father and girls to their mother. According to Licht,

Hull and Ballantyne (2016), some genes are hereditary from the parents

and this is observed in the career distributions in our family.

Cognitive

Cognitive concept of psychology describes the development of child

thinking and reasoning aspects. Considering the case of our family, both

the parents have high cognitive powers as shown by the kind of tasks each

one of them is doing. Consequently, all the children take the same path as

that of the parents and none of the children is seen to be redundant

academically. Various psychologists’ posses the view that besides the

contribution of the environment towards a child’s cognitive development, a

larger perspective is contributed to by the inborn factors obtained from the

parents. This perspective of psychology is useful in the brain development

and hence may facilitates one’s advancement of studies.

Behavioural

Psychology provides a systematic approach towards understanding a

particular behaviour. Different psychologists show that occurrence of a

particular behaviour in future is a function of other several elements such

as environment, reinforcement and returns among others. Shiyanbola and

Mort (2015), says that environment plays a very important role in shaping

one’s behaviour towards a specific direction. For example, we growing up

to become engineers and pharmacist was something shaped by the family

environment. Currently, almost all of us in the family want to reach the

levels of our parents and that is something determined by the fact that we

are seeing the parents at those levels.

Humanistic

Through this approach, various psychologists have been able to

explain people’s behaviours and emotions. This aspect takes into

consideration factors such as free will and self-efficacy. Through this

approach, psychologists are able to provide guidance on the ways that can

be used by individuals in order to improve their behaviours (Shiyanbola and

Mort, 2015). Personally, I consider this psychological approach so

important as it can help e be what I want to be in future. Over the past

years, I have learned to be self-reliable and time conscious, an element

built in me by the humanistic psychological approach.

Conclusion

Psychological concepts are more necessary to all of the careers,

mostly to those particular careers dealing with human being such as

medicine, pharmacy and nursing among others. A part from them assisting

in problem identification and solving, they are also important in shaping

one’s image. The concepts are crucial elements in the development of

emotional balance and understanding of other people. This is quite

important to me as a pharmacist since I will be handling people of different

personalities and with different problems.
