MAGICAL HARRY POTTER

ACTIVITIES TO EXPAND THE STORY

ADDING THE
ATMOSPHERE

Try to decorate your area when

there are no students about.
The element of surprise is
great. You can create different
corners of your room to
represent the different classes
in Hogwarts, such as Potions
class. If you are doing this with
another teacher, you can
decorate each classroom as a
specific area which really adds
to the atmosphere and the fun!
SIGNS IN THE LIBRARY

No talking, laughing, whispering, sneezing, scurrying or any

other behaviour that might seem at all suspicious in any
way.

The Sorting Hat
I bought a witches hat, but the original one that I used I made out of
construction paper. It didn’t seem to matter; the students liked them both!

I gave each student a set of questions that they could pick three
characteristics. From those characteristics I could tell them which house they
would be in.

The student sat on the stool, with the hat on their head. My hat lit up, and so
then I told them that hat had spoken and the House was __________! I had
made up House Emblems which I placed at each table and the students
gathered at that table when they had figured out which group they were in.
Each time the students returned to the library, they sat with their House.

Olivander’s Wand Making Class

I brought in enough long twigs about the

width of a thumb and about 10 inches long.
The children each chose one. We dipped the
end in liquid glue and then in glitter. The
students then named their wand and created
a special spell to go with it.
I used this as a small activity prompt, so
that they could present their wand and it's
spell capability to the class

CRYSTAL MAKING
Cupid Crystals are a love potion
from the WonderWitch line by
Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes
The effect is that is it causes the
drinker to become infatuated with the
giver of the potion. You can call use
either of the crystal recipes to make
“love” crystals.
SPELLS AND POTIONS
POTIONS
Using the bookshelves, I created an
apothecary shop. Many bottles have
interesting shapes and filled with
coloured water, vinegar, ammonia
(with a BEWARE sign on it) apple
juice, etc. I also had baking soda and
borax in jars. The students could
create their own potions or try a
science lesson, such as in making the
Crystals.
Potions and Apothecary I tried to use names from the stories and find
some household item to be that Magical bit.

Unicorn hair was actually the fine silk off

corn on the cob, butterfly wing is the outer
papery covering of a clove of garlic.
Invisible Ink was a type of ink that changes anything written in it to become invisible. Text written in

invisible ink can be rendered visible again in two ways, either by using a Revealer or the spell

Aparecium. Invisible ink was used in Tom Riddle’s diary.

STEPS

1. dip the cotton swab into the lemon juice and this pen to write an invisible message or picture on the

paper.

2. Wait for your “ink” to dry and completely disappear.

3. An adult can help you iron over the dry paper. Watch your message reveal itself!

INVISIBLE INK, INVISIBLE INK,.....................INVISIBLE INK

Stink Potion

You can make a stink potion from matches and ammonia. Just

slice the sulfur-based heads off 20 matches, and put them in

an empty glass bottle. Add two tablespoons of household

ammonia (be careful, this is dangerous to eyes and smells

terrible). Gently shake, wait a few days, and you've got some

stink potion. This is best to do on your own ahead of time, and

just let the students smell it.

HERBOLOGY CLASS

Herbology class was part of spells and potions. The students drew herbs and plants in their
books to use in their potions. Many of them made up great names, like “goat breath herb” used
to treat bad breath.

An easy way to make a spell book is to take a piece of 8 x 11 paper. Fold it in half like a hotdog,
and then fold it in half like a hamburger.

Open up the paper, and tear down from the FOLD on the hamburger side, to the crease. Then
fold the paper into itself to make a booklet.
DRAGON AND MONSTER IDENTIFICATION
dog-headed, barking eagle in
Persian folklore.

A large predatory composite

monster with the wings, forelimbs,
A fire-breathing reptile of
and head of an eagle and the
unusual size and ferocity
hind-parts and tail of a lion. The
eagle head also has strange,
pointed, upstanding ears
A powerful, venomous
reptilian creature
creature which has the front half of an eagle and the
hind half of a horse.

a beast with a single large, pointed,

spiraling horn projecting from its
forehead

Senmurv, hippogriff,unicorn,dragon griffin, basilisk

We made the “silver” snitches using a small styro-foam ball, wrapped it in
SNITCH MAKING AND QUIDDITCH silver foil (tinfoil) and attached the store bought feathers, 2 in each side.
We watched an SFU quidditch team game on You Tube.
THE MIRROR OF ERISED

This makes a good starting off point

about needs and wants. When you get
to the part in the book where Harry
comes across the Mirror, you can see
how many students actually figure out
what it means and it is also a fun thing
to write out a note in backwards writing!

O.W.L. EXAMINATIONS
O.W.L. or Ordinary Wizarding Level is an examination that
each student must take at the end of year 5. I have a short test
for the students at the end of the unit just for fun. When we do it
in class, I find it works best to ask one question at a time to
each House. So for example, the first question would be for
Hufflepuff, and anyone in Hufflepuff can answer. I give each
correct answer a point, and try to have a small prize for the
winners.
If there are really keen Harry Potter Fans, who are very
competitive, we do it at lunch time. But only if there are just a
few students who want to take part. You can find online exams
that students can do, or make one up yourself based on the
readings from the book.

There is more information at this site.

The Stone was believed to turn base metals into gold, and also to produce the Elixir of Life, which could
make you immortal.
1. A Sprayable Stink Bomb

Sure, burning hair makes a great stink bomb, but who wants to deal with
collecting other people's hair? Yuck.

What you do with it next is up to you—but a disposable squirt gun can make an
effective delivery mechanism. And it's so much less wasteful than tossing eggs.
Just wear impermeable gloves, for the sake of stinky fingers, and, you know,
prints on the weapon.

. The Table O' Blood

You'll need to invite your victims over for some bratwursts on the grill, but the
effort will be worth it. Just take a mostly empty ketchup bottle, and pour in one
and a half teaspoons of baking soda. (Do not shake—you'll start the chemical
reaction prematurely.) Close the lid tightly.

Now, grill the brats. Set out the condiments. The unsuspecting ketchup user has
to shake the bottle—that "ketchup" has gotten all settled in the
Bubble juice is supposedly a magical juice. It bears a resemblance to
Veritaserum, as Harry Potter once thought the truth serum that
Professor Snape stored in his storeroom to be bubble juice.

FLOO POWDER

Floo powder is a glittery powder used by witches and wizards to travel

through the Floo Network. The Network connects most wizarding
households and buildings. This powder was invented in the 13th
century by Ignatia Wildsmith.

Marauders' Map Instructions from Britta Blvd Page 1 of 5

1. Print out your map on a sheet of 8.5x11" parchment paper.

2. Find the faint lines near the edge of the patio and the Honeydukes coffeetable to make gentle
mountain folds (fold backwards) in approximately thirds lengthwise. Do NOT crease these folds!

http://www.britta.com/hogwarts/Year6/prep/map/MapInstructions.html 7/26/2006
Marauders' Map Instructions from Britta Blvd Page 2 of 5

3. Find the faint lengthwise lines that mark the outline of the front cover image and cut only to where
you just folded. You will notice that on this cut line, the design doesn't match anywhere until after it's
folded into the final pattern.

4. Find the faint lines that mark the inner edges of where the front covers meet in the middle. You will
see that the design changes at the same line. Make mountain folds on those lines.

5. Bring the last two mountain folds together to meet in the middle. Carefully adjust the middle until the
design meets, then press down to finger-crease the outer edge folds. Don't worry about a crisp crease
yet, since you still might have a final adjustment at the end.

http://www.britta.com/hogwarts/Year6/prep/map/MapInstructions.html 7/26/2006
Marauders' Map Instructions from Britta Blvd Page 3 of 5

6. Turn over and you'll see your top flap edges hang over the folds from the back view.

7. Trim the front cover flaps either now, or you can wait until after the final folding.

8. Turn back over so you see the drawing again. Unfold the front cover you just folded so it is out of the
way. Use the cross-marks where the inner ends of the cuts are to fold the top and bottom strips across in
valley folds as shown. Your original gentle mountain folds should meet up with the side folds of the
front cover. Adjust a little if necessary, since sometimes the cuts can end in slightly different places.

9. Find the faint lines and design edges for the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry lettering on
the edges of the horizontal flaps. Mountain fold all four ends as shown.
