1. Introduction
Describe the basis of design for the structural engineering aspects of the project.
List and record key design information/data for the engineering works.
Assist and guide the design team in preparation of conceptual and detailed
designs for engineering works on the project.
2. Structural Designs
This Section of the document describes the criteria for the structural designs on the
project. This criterion has been compiled from UNOPS Design Planning Manual for
Buildings, Kenyan Standards, British Standards, Eurocode and other International
Standards and Codes of Practice.
The above references are used in a complementary manner. Where requirements of two
or more codes or standards are found to conflict, the more stringent of them is adopted for
the purpose of this project.
In order to serve its purpose, a structure must be designed to against collapse and be
serviceable in use. Structural calculations alone do not guarantee safe, serviceable and
durable structures; but equally important are the suitability of materials, quality control
and supervision of workmanship.
Shortcoming of limit state design is that a structure may become unsatisfactory through a
number of ways which have to be considered independently against defined limits of
satisfactory behaviour. Limit state design admits that there is an inherent variability in
loads, materials and methods of design and construction hence impossible to achieve
complete safety against any possible shortcomings. The aim of limit state design
therefore, is to provide acceptable probability that the structure will perform satisfactorily
during the intended design life through provision of sufficient margins of safety.
The two (2) main categories of limit state design includes;
Ultimate Limit State (ULS for adequate safety provisions (Life Safety)
Serviceability Limit State (SLS) for durability provisions (Normal
Occupancy)
In these designs for reinforced concrete, three (3) limit states are considered as generally
in practice;
A statistical approach can be applied to the variations within materials which occur in
practice. A normal or Gaussian distribution curve is assumed to represent the results of
the tests and a characteristic value can be chosen below which, no more than 5% of the
test results are expected to lie.
Where, Yr is partial safety factor for loading. The factor takes into account the possibility
that the loads acting on the structure may be greater than the characteristic values. It also
takes into account the assumptions made in the method of analysis, and seriousness of
failure to meet the design criteria for a particular limit state. The table below shows the
ultimate load factors for the design ultimate limit state;
Where, Ym is a partial safety factor on the material strength. This factor takes into account
the variation in workmanship and quality control that may normally be expected to occur
in the manufacture of materials. The values of Ym to be used when designing for the
ultimate limit state are given below;
The building is two storey structure with 150mm reinforced concrete solid slab for the
roof and first floor slab.
The structural framing system for transfer of vertical and lateral loads to the foundation
comprises of the following:
The lateral load on the structures is not significant bearing in the seismic of the site and
the height of the structures. Never the less, resistance of the buildings against lateral loads
will be provided by the masonry/unreinforced concrete walls and beams and columns
framing action.
All structural elements shall be effectively tied together in longitudinal, transverse and
vertical directions to provide a robust structure, in order to meet BS 8110 Code
requirements for robustness.
The roofing system is a 150mm solid slab supported on 450/300mm x 200mm reinforced
concrete beams. In addition, the structure will also have an OHP system comprising of
Timber trusses with 19mm Plywood ceiling and gauge 26 IT5 roofing sheets.
2.2.5 Foundations
Geotechnical investigation was not yet done by the time the design was being done, for
the purposes of design a minimum foundation safe bearing capacity of 150kN/m2 was
assumed basing on the foundation soil properties of past from previous project that was
done at the same site and Table 1 of BS 8004:1986 Code of practice for Foundations —
Presumed allowable bearing values under static loading. However, a proper geotechnical
investigation shall be done before construction can commence.
The foundation designed is reinforced concrete strip footing supporting the load bearing
masonry walls and pad footings under RC columns.
Thermal Movement
Thermal movement will be based on the external temperature range of 10°C minimum
and 45°C maximum.
Deflection
Concrete slab deflections will be in accordance to BS 8110: Part 1: 1997 and are
generally limited to a total deflection of span/250.
Movement Joints
The structures does not require and movement joints since the maximum dimensions is
less than 50m as recommended by Manual for Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures
to BS 8110 by IstructE/ICE
The roof structure shall be designed in accordance with CP3: Chapter V, using a basic
wind speeds of 42m/s.
Seismic Design Assumption Logic: Somalia has neither a national design standard nor
guideline for Structural designs; hence adoption of Kenyan Earthquake code and other
International design codes of practice is deemed logical being that the countries are
neighbouring with physical conditions that correlate for particular regions.
The structure is a two storey masonry load bearing building, basing on Africa Seismic
Map (UNOCHA, Earthquake Risk in Africa: Modified Mercalli Scale, 2007) and the
Kenya Code of Practice for Design of Buildings and other Structures in Relation to
Earthquakes;
The corresponding earthquake intensity for Mogadishu (project Location) is between
zone I – Instrumental and Zone V - Rather-Strong based on Africa Seismic Map
(UNOCHA and Zone V based on the Kenyan Earthquake code. Guided by Table 1 of
Kenyan Code these Structures do not require rigorous seismic design.
However a design check to BS EN 1998-1:2004 (Eurocode 8) was done.
Gravity Loads
1.2gk + 1.2qk ± 1.2wk Maximum dead, live and wind loads acting
together.
Gravity Loads
1.0gk Minimum load – to cause adverse effects on
adjacent spans
1.0gk + 1.0qk For foundation sizing
2.6 Tolerances
Generally, tolerances given below have been established with respect to BS5606. The
tolerances given below are to include the fabrication, setting out and construction
tolerances.
The architectural scheme brief envisages reinforced concrete and masonry structural
members which are expected to be both cost effective and structurally efficient compared
2.7.1 Concrete
a) Structural Concrete
Structural Concrete Class shall be as follows:-
- Columns C25
- Beams C25
- Slabs C25
.
b) Blinding Concrete
Blinding concrete shall be of Class C15 generally.
2.7.2 Reinforcement
Structural steel shall be Grade 43A or 43C conforming to B.S. 4360: 1986 fy = 275N/mm2
Where structural timber is to be employed for any works, it shall generally be seasoned
cypress grade II (structural) or better in accordance with Kenyan standard KS02-771:
1991. In particular, the following stresses for Cypress timber shall be used;
Bending stress //g fb = 5N/mm2
Compression //g fc = 6N/mm2
Tension //g ft = 3N/mm2
Shear //g fv = 1.1N/mm2
Modulus of Elasticity; Emax= 7400N/mm2, Emin = 3600N/mm2
2.7.5 Finishes
The design assumes that the floor finish shall be 35mm floor screed onto which a 15mm
finish (ceramic or granite tiles only for purpose of load calculation) will be applied. For
walls, 13mm plaster on each face is assumed.
Load bearing masonry blocks shall be the solid type with a minimum density of
1,500kg/m3 and a minimum average compressive strength of 7.0N/mm2. Where walls are
more than 3 metres long, bracing flash columns shall be provided at spacing of 3 metres
maximum, and beams at intervals of 3.0m heights.
For the purpose of assessing loading for the roof slab, the design assumes that the roof
finish shall be 25mm levelling screed onto which a two layers of APP and 50mm
protective screed will be applied. For walls, 13mm plaster on each face is assumed. See
loading assumptions.
Generally, external cladding will be glazed curtain walling with brick cladding to the stair
walls as per Architectural details.
2.7.9 Partitions
The design assumes that all partition walls are constructed of lightweight materials (i.e
timber/steel stud and plaster board) having a combined weight, giving a loading of not
more than 1.0kN/m2 over the floor area. The 100mm toilet wall partition weight of
1.65kN/m2 was calculated used in Design of first floor slab.
It is the responsibility of building management that this restriction is taken into account
over the life of the building.
The minimum width of structural concrete to meet the 2 hours fire resistance shall be as
follows:
(i) Beams: 200mm
(ii) Floor Slab: 125mm
(iii) Column 50% exposed (with plaster): 200mm
