INTRODUCTION & HISTORY
The Town of Smithtown is located 50 miles from New York City on Long
Island’s north shore in western Suffolk County. Within the town’s 55 square
miles are the hamlets of Smithtown, Kings Park, St. James, Nesconset and
parts of Hauppauge, Commack and Fort Salonga, as well as three incorporat-
ed villages: Village of the Branch, Village of Nissequogue and Village of Head
of the Harbor. Smithtown’s rich and colorful history is reflected in its current
charm and bustling downtown area.
S
mithtown’s history begins with
its founder, Richard Smythe
(Smith), an Englishman who
migrated to the New World
prior to 1643. Long Island
records place Richard Smythe in South-
ampton from 1656 to 1664. According
to legend, the Nesquake Indians agreed
to sell Smythe all the land he could ride
around in a day. Choosing the longest
day of the year, Smythe rode his bull,
Whisper, around what is now Smithtown.
The amazed Indians honored the agree-
ment, and Smythe became owner of a
vast tract of land. Today, the huge bronze
statue of a bull that stands proudly on its
pedestal, greeting visitors as they enter

bull ride.
