INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Problem

Speaking is an activity used by someone to communicate with others. When someone

speaks, he or she interacts and uses the language to express his or her ideas, feeling, and
though. According to researcher experience when being a student in SMA Negeri 2 Muara
Bungo. Speaking activities at the tenth grade class of SMA Negeri 2 Muara Bungo do not
work well in the classroom because of several factors. There are some students who find it
difficult to speak English because the vocabulary of students is still lack. And teacher does
not provide more teaching and practice on students speaking skills. Some students also think
English is less important, and very boring. In this case my aim is to make this research is to
provide a unique method in teaching English, so that students are able to develop their ability
to speak English in different ways.

Researcher used a media that can encourage the students. English Song, in the
writer’s opinion and her background, is of one of the potential activities for students to listen
to pronunciation of English words well, and give them enjoyment because they are bored
with habitual teaching by their teacher. Grifee (2001: 10) said that , “song is part of music
that your sing through words. It closely related to speaking, because speaking is an action of
having a communication. with the others in using oral language.

Based on the problem and the fact above, the researcher decided to conduct the
Classroom Action Research to the tenth grade class students of SMAN 2 in academic year
2017/2018. This research is expected to solve the problems of the students in speaking and to
improving the students’ speaking ability through English Songs.

1.2 Research question

1. How does the effect of english song lyrics to improve students speaking
skills at tenth grade’s students in SMA Negeri 2 Muara Bungo ?
2. How the influence of english song lyrics on students speaking skills ?
1.3 Limitation of the Problem
From the identification of the problem, the writer focuses in the improving students
speaking ability through some English songs. The students in this research are the tenth
grade students of “SMA Negeri 2 Muara Bungo”.

1.4 The purpose of the Research

- To improve student’s speaking skills through English Song

- To find out whether the using English songs lyrics can improve the students mastering
of speaking ability.

1.5 Significance of The Research

This research is important because the findings of this research will provide
significant information to researchers, teacher, and students. She hopes that the findings of
this reseach can be useful for students to improve their speaking ability in the process of
learning.
