CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Media are the communication tools used to store and deliver

information or data. The term refers to components of the mass media

communications industry, such as print media, publishing, the news media,

photography, cinema, broadcasting (radio and television), and advertising.

The development of early writing and paper enabled longer-distance

communication system such as mail, including in the Persian Empire (Chapar

Khaneh and Angarium ) and Roman Empire, which can be interpreted as

early forms of media. Writers such as Howard Rheingold have framed early

forms of human communication as early forms of media, such as the Lascaux

cave paintings and early writing. Another framing of the history of media

starts with the Chauvet Cave paintings and continues with other ways to

carry human communication beyond the short range of voice: smoke

signals, trail markers, and sculpture.

Media and society are closely related to each other. The extensive

impact of media on society can easily be seen these days. Media reflects our

society, how it works and what it constitutes. With the advancement in

technological area, our society has also observed the expansion in the

thoughts and ideas of people. Every single invention starting from the

1
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

printing press to the latest smartphones our society has accept it. Earlier

people used to comminicate things with the help of sketch and print forms

but as time passes the medium became more advanced.

Violence is “the use of physical force so as to injure, abuse, damage

or destroy.Less conventional definitions are also used such as the World

Health Organization’s definition of violence as the intentional use of physical

force or power, threatened or actual, against one self, another person or

against a group or community which either results in or has a high likelihood

of resulting in injury, death, psychological harm, mal development or

deprivation.

Violence in many forms can be preventable. There is a strong

relationship between levels of violence and modifiable factors in a country

such as concentrated (regional),poverty, income and gender inequality, the

harmful use of alcohol and the absence of safe, stable and nurturing

relationship between children and parents.Strategies addressing the

underlying causes of violence can be relatively effective in preventing

violence, although mental and physical health and individual responses,

personalities, etc. Have always been decisive factors and formation of these

behaviors.

The National Television Violence Study (NTVS)(1998) a comprehemsive

examination of the content of American television programs defines media

violence as;

2
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

Any overt depiction of a credible threat of physical force or the actual

use of such force intended to physically harm an animate being or group of

being. Violence also includes certain depictions of physically harmful

consequences aginst an animate being or group that occurs as a result of

unseen violent means. Thus there are three primary types of violent

depictions; credible threats, behavioral acts, and harmful consequences.

Media executives publicly claim that the reason for violence in the media

is that society is filled with violence, and that the media , in their products,

have a responsibility to accurately depict society. Here, we offer what we

believe to be the underlying reasons, based on economic realities of the

media industry, for the unrealistic levels of volence depicted in television,

movies, and video games.

The ill effects of media violence on society are well documented (e.g.,

Anderson & Bushman , 2002; Gentle & Anderson, chapter 7, this volu3, 2001;

Bushman & Huesmann, 2001; Smith & Donnerstein, 1998). On the basis of

the accumulating evidence, six major proffessional organizations that focus

on public health issues-- the American psychological Association, the

American Medical Association, and the American Academy of Child and

adolescent psychiartry--- recently signed a joint statement attesting to the

dangers of media violence for children: “ At this time, well over 1,000

studies… point overwhelmingly to a causal connection between media

violence and aggressive behavior in some children (Joint

3
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

Statement,2000,p.1). The evidence (and endorsement of the evidence by

experts in the field) apparently does not convince media executives,

however. Just as tabcco company CEOs did for decades, media executives

have consistently told the public that there is no proof that dangerous

content of their products leads to an ill effects on society.

However, media violence effects are often more subtle than such statements

would imply, sometimes leading indirectly to increased aggression, or to

decreased helping ang compassion, via psychological mechanisms or

processess that can be slow to develop a difficult to recognize. For example,

many scholars have hypothesized that, over time repeated exposure to

violence in the media can desensitize viewers to real-world violence (see

Bushman & Anderson, 2001). That is although viewing violence is though to

initially provoke fear, axienty, disgust, or other negative affective states,

repeated exposure to violence appears to reduce its psychological impact,

such that violent images eventually do not elict these negative responses.

Social Media are interactive computer mediated technologies that facilitate

the creating and sharing of information, ideas, career interests and other form

of expressions via virtual communities and networks.

Networks formed through social media change the way groups of people

interact and communicate or stand with the votes. They introduce substantial

and pervasive changes to communication between organization, communities

and individuals. These changes are the focus of emerging fields of techno self

4
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

studies.Social media differ from paper based media and traditional electronic

media such as tv broadcasting, radio broadcasting in many ways including

quality,reach,frequency,interactivity,usability,immediacy,and performance.

Observers have noted a range of positive and negative impacts of social

media use.Social media can help to improve an individual’s sense of

connectedness with real or online communities and can be an effective

communication tool for corporations,entrepreneurs,nonprofit

organizations,advocacy groups,political parties and governments.

There are several negative effects to social media which receive criticisms

for example regarding privacy issues, information overload and internet

fraud.Social media can also have negative social effects on users. Some users

have experienced threats of violence online and have feared these threats

manifesting themselves offline. At the same time, concerns have been raised

about possible links between heavy social media use and depression and

even the issues of cyberbullying, online harrasment and trolling.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study aimed to discussed;

Conceptual Framework

The flow of this study is shown in the research paradigm. The research

paradigm has three parts that consists the input, process and output; the

profile of the respondents, the extent of magnitude of media violence, the

relationship between the profile of the respondents and the extent of

magnitude of the media violence, the distribution of survey questionnaire as

the process of this research and the action plan of the researchers as the

output.

The input box is the problem that we usual encounter on this study.

The process box consists of the research process which will conduct through

of the validated questionnaire and analyzing the results of the answers.

Scope, Limitations and Delimitation

The study covered the The limitation of this study is the respondents of

the study. The respondents will be the selected Grade 12 Humanities and

Social Science students of Lipa City Senior High School. The respondents are

only limited to 200 respondents.

This study was delimited to other strand; and also for other Senior High

School who are not studying at Lipa City Senior High School.

Significance of the Study

This study conduct by researchers was enabling every reader to

give an interpretation about the threat of media violence and assessing

its magnitude to the humss students of Lipa City Senior High.

To the Students. The study may give them the information

about the threat of media violence for them to be aware of its negative

effects.

9
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

To the Teachers. They will know the reason why their students

behavior are changing especially those who are addicted to social

media;they help them in the way of sharing their knowledge to improve

and guide them every day.

To the Parents. This research can inform them the threat of

media violence;how can it effect the behavior of their children.

To the Researchers. The researchers will able to acquired new

ideas regarding the threat of media violence and how it can affect the

behavior of the students especially those who are addicted to social

media.

To the Future Researchers. This study may become a

reference in handling new research and providing validity of other

related findings. It also serves as a reference that helps them to

understand and get an idea regardless to the done research.

Definition of Terms

 Accountancy, Business and Management – According to Nicholas

Sparks 2002 it is a strand that offers subjects which help and open our

minds into the business world, therefore, become the ticket to the

corporate world. In this study, this strand that indicates on how to

manage or control a business.

 Academic Performance – According to Ellie Williams 2007 when

people hear the term “academic performance” they often to think of a

person’s GPA. However, several factors indicate a student’s academic

10
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

success. While some may not graduate top of their class, they may

hold leadership position in several student groups or score high on

standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT. In this study, it is the

activity of students related to schools and education.

 Education – According to John Dewey 2001, education is the process

of continuous reconstruction of experience. Therefore, education can

be term as the basic need in one’s life. In this study, it is the process of

facilitating learning, skills, values, beliefs, and habits.

 Financial Aid – According to New York State Financial Aid

Administrators Association Financial aid is any grant or scholarship,

loans, or paid employment offered to help a student meet his/her

college expenses. Such aid is usually provided by various sources such

as federal and state agencies, colleges, high schools, foundations and

corporation. The amount of financial aid that a student receives is

determined through federal, state and institutional guidelines. In this

study, this is the use of money for education or the student’s financial

assistance.
 Government – According to Dr. Harold Damerow 2005, a professor of

government and history gets a bit more specific with his definition. He

says that government is responsible primarily for making public policy

for an entire society. He also mentions that government is the steering

mechanism for a given society. It forms the policies that keep a

particular society heading in the right direction. In this study, this is a

11
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

group of people that governs a community or unit that have the power

to manage or control a country.

 Miscellaneous Fee – are items such as registration, student activity,

health service and insurance and academic-related fees that are either

not covered or partially covered by tuition fee and grant. In this study,

it is a fee that is covered other school expenses.

 Scholarship- According to Paula 2003, an amount of money given by

a school, colleges, university, or other organization to pay for the

studies of a person with great ability but little money. In this study, it is

a support from the government to the less fortunate students who

deserves it
 Tuition Fee – are the money that you pay to be taught, especially in a

college or university. In this study, this is the financial need that

student have to pay for them to attend the school.

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the conceptual and research literature that helps

to reviewed information that is related to the present study. It focuses on the

text and research works regarding the impact of scholarship program to the

educational needs of students in terms of their financial. This study helps the

students to clearly understand how to manage and to use the money that

they receive from the scholarship program. The parents of the scholar

students will guide them on how to handle the financial assistance that they

get from the government. Everybody is expecting that the results are duly

apt to the required performances in tackling subject matters.

Conceptual Literature

13
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

This study pertained to the scholarship program and impact to the

students regarding to their educational needs. This study enables the

researchers to know the impact of scholarship program to the selected

students in terms of financial. Moreover, the needs for the required surveys

in the attainment of important data in calculating which one reason greatly

the impact to the students of scholarship program to their educational

needs.

Scholarship Program. Many students graduate from college with

enormous student loan debt or limit their education in an attempt to control

costs. Because scholarships are free money, however, student can focus on

their careers instead of thinking about how they will repay loans. This allows

them to go into fields like law or medicine that require postgraduate training

or to pursue careers in public service that do not pay high salaries. By

removing financial barriers, scholarships make education and career goals

easier to obtain. (Mahuron 2016)

School Values. On the other hand, Charters 2000 one of the major

difficulties is that school situations are not so vivid, interesting, and

satisfying as the situations outside the school; moreover, school situations

differ intrinsically from those situations outside in which character traits will

be habitually practiced.

Cognitive learning. The Governance of Basic Education Act of 2001

provides the general goal of basic education: to develop the Filipino learners

14
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

by providing them with basic competencies in literacy and numeracy, critical

thinking and learning skills, and desirable values to become caring self-

reliant, productive, socially aware, patriotic, and responsible citizens.

Academic Deficiency. According to Abo and Tawacal (2001) mentioned

Gonzales who sought to draw a profile of the dismissed students determining

the reasons for their academic deficiency. The reasons are found to be social

in nature, involving large homes and family problems compounded by

personal, emotional, and interpersonal relationship problems. The most

significant factor was financial status of dismissed students belonging to

large families.

According to Gegato (2007) studied the stressors that affect both the

academic and personal life of scholars. The result of the study shows that

academic or school related issues (requirements, examination are the three

types of major stressors among the scholars in the University. Other

stressors are relational and environmental stressors deadlines can be the

main reason of pressures and be a major stressor.

Students Expenses. According to (Galemba, 2005; Gegato,2007) students

insufficient allowance is one of the leading problems of college students.

Since all of the participants are scholars, they are given allowances and

privileges by the University. These scholars reported to have experienced

delayed allowances both from their parents and the University. This is a usual

problem to most students and it becomes a hindrance to them.

15
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

Scholarship Beneficiaries. According to Marques, 2007, these positions

are in compliance with the attributes, ideas, and skills shown in the early

Bachelor days, all of which have awarded specific students with hefty

scholarships. Studies have suggested that scholarship beneficiaries are

leaders of their respective generations and are ones who think ahead of the

others and aim to master their objectives and goals. Being able to adapt to

different situations and communicating well, as well as implementing

accordingly, the changes necessary to succeed are characteristic attributes

of leaders, hence scholarship beneficiaries.

Financial Aid for Academic Excellence. According to Oreopoulos (2009)

as found in Bartik & Lachowska (2012) looked at the effects of merit-based

scholarships on students who are solid performers, but not top-ranked,

among entering first-year undergraduates at a large Canadian university. It

was found by the study that there exist strong effects for women, but none

for men. More so, Leuven, Oosterbeek, and Klaauw (2010) conduct a similar

study. The experiment under study provided a cash reward for those

students who completed all of their first-year requirements by the start of

the next academic year. Thus, it was found by the study that rewards matter

only for high-ability groups.

Effectiveness of Scholarship Program. Bartik and Lachowska (2012)

studied whether college scholarships can be an effective tool in raising

students’ performance in secondary school and applied one aspect of the

16
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

Kalamazoo Promise that resembles a quasi-experiment. The surprise

announcement of the scholarship created a large change in expected college

tuition costs that varied across different groups of students based on past

enrolment decisions. This variation is arguably exogenous to unobserved

student characteristics. Thus, the study estimated the effects of this change

by a set of “difference-in-differences” regressions where it compared the

change in student outcomes in secondary school across time for different

student “length of enrolment” groups.

Research Literature

These are the various studies about the Impact of Scholarship Program to the

educational needs of the selected students in different aspects that really

help the researcher to be the basis of the study.

“A scholarship is a financial award given to a student on the basis of

academic achievement and promise. Many scholarships are awarded based

on merit. However, some also take into account financial need. Scholarships

do not have to be repaid.” (Flinn, 2010)

Mealli and Rampichini (2012) have, instead, analyzed data regarding four

Italian universities and they show that the “Right to Study Scholarship”

(which is the same Italian institution that we here analyze) prevents students

from dropping-out. However, they find that the effect vanishes for lower

income students. Here we provide new evidence from the “Right to Study

17
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

Scholarship” at the University of Bologna showing that such effects on

performance for lower income students are not only significant but are also

remarkably large. My results are also at odds with Schizzerotto et al. (2012)

who studies the effect of a merit based scholarship at the University of

Trento and do not find any significant effect on academic achievement. Such

contrast might have to do with the fact that they use a relatively small

sample from survey data, which are more sensible to measurement errors. In

my case, the administrative dataset I use allows to gain precision on the

estimates.

With reference to the US case, Bettinger (2004) shows that a mean-tested

programmed of financial assistance exert a remarkable reduction in the drop-

out rate in Ohio University.

Cornwell at al. (2003) analyze the same program and find that the shift from

need- to merit-based aid increases the probability to withdraw and reduces

the number of average credits obtained.

Educational attainment and a college degree in particular, is the surest path

for socio-economic advancement in American society. However, the doors to

higher education are not equally open to all. Students from poorer families

and those with less educated parents are less likely to finish high school and

enter college (Kauffman, Alt and Chapman 2004).

18
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

In 2001, the College Success Foundation, with financial support from the Bill

and Melinda Gates Foundation, launched the Washington State Achievers

Program (WSA) in sixteen predominantly low to modest income high schools

in Washington State. The program was designed to: 1) encourage school

redesign that facilitates high academic achievement and increased college

enrolment among all students at the selected high schools, 2) identify and

reduce financial barriers to college for motivated and talented low-income

students, 3) provide mentoring and academic support to WSA scholars

(program participants) once they are enrolled in college, and 4) develop a

diverse cadre of college-educated citizens and leaders in Washington State

(O’Brien 2007).

Students in the 16 WSA program schools were eligible to apply to be a WSA

scholar (and receive a college scholarship for up to five years) if their family

income was in the lowest one-third of the Washington State income

distribution (O’Brien 2007). The scholarships were designed to cover all college

expenses (tuition, room, board, books, etc.) after considering support from

other sources (O’Brien 2007).

The most comprehensive evaluation of the WSA program has been

undertaken by St. John, Hu and colleagues (2006, 2007, 2010) who estimate the

impact of a WSA scholarship on educational ambitions and college

attendance. They find the scholarship recipients, relative to non-recipients,

have more positive educational outcomes net of controls on individual-level

19
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. At the individual level, it is

quite difficult to estimate the direct effect of the program (such as the

scholarship) from selectivity into the program.

G. James and S. Mahajan, using scholarship management research to

optimize the impact of scholarship funds, in proceeding of the annual forum

of the association for institutional research 2004.

According to Alon (2011) emphasizes the necessity of considering

socioeconomic background in analysis by explaining, “on the other hand,

same factors that increase eligibility for financial aid, low income family

status are negatively related to persistence and graduation. On the other

hand, amounts of financial aid are expected to increase persistence and

graduation rates. Hence, the negative effect of need based and eligibility

may mask the positive effect of aid quantity on college success”.

Tuition Fee. The purpose of Ministry of Education (MOE) 2003, Republic of

China (Taiwan) Scholarships is to encourage all International students who

has the excellence in their academics (Excluding students from Mainland

China, Hong Kong and Macau SAR) to undertake degree studies in Taiwan by

awarding each recipient with tuition fees and payment of academic fees.

Allowance. According to Marine Scholarship of China 2001, living allowance

is to be granted by the university on a monthly basis, starting from the date

of entrance of the student. For the first month, the students who register

20
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

before or on the 15th day of the month will receive the allowance in full, and

those after the 15th day of the month, in half. The allowance will extend half

a month after the specified graduation date designated by the university.

Ireland and the United Kingdom recognize and address college living

expenses with maintenance grants, and on occasion, the United States has

too.11 Monthly subsistence payments for living costs were made to veterans

in the original G.I. Bill. Today, in contrast, living expenses are a substantial

yet frequently overlooked portion of the real price of college.

The programme offers full-time scholarships and/or fellowships that cover

monthly allowance, participation costs, travelling and insurance costs of the

students. Scholarship amounts can vary according to the level of studies,

the duration of studies, and the scholar’s nationality (scholarships for non-EU

students are higher than for EU students).

Educational Tour. According to Prajkta Waditwar 2007, Procurement

Manager at City of Somerville 2016, education tour is nothing but the

planned combination of tours, site visits with the target of global learning

which can enhance the knowledge of students and can help them to see the

clear picture of the theoretical things they have learnt so far.

According to Thomas Jefferson 2002, the children of the poor must be thus

educated at common expense. Today, grants and scholarship open doors for

21
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

students from low-income families, by providing financial aid for those who

need it most.

Miscellaneous Fee. According to Mr. Gilbert Marcelo 2006, Assistant

Registrar, student has asked about a breakdown of the miscellaneous fees in

the past, so instead of constantly having to line up and pay for the request,

students can now easily get a clearer idea about what type of fees are

collected. He added that the list is unofficial and is made for students and

parents to refer to, but for matters regarding applications for scholarship or

refund, students are still acquired to ask for the official copy signed by the

registrar and stamped with the school seal.

School Need. As a part of the Sallie Mae Scholarship Fund, the Unmet Need

Scholarship Program provides low income families with coveted college cash.

School Oriented. According to Kathryn Hoffses, PhD 2002, it is the basics of

academics, time management, and social skills while providing you with a

little extra support and guidance—kind of like a bicycle with training wheels.

High school gives you the chance to take off those training wheels and learn

how to be more independent.

Competent. According to Frank Elliot 2010, he defines competent depends

on what the competence is about. It is the clearest when there are no

common higher levels of ability. There are many more abilities where people

are more inclined to make distinctions, such as between “competent” and

22
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

“highly competent”. We are saying here that in these matters there is no

single common standard or competence, but that we can distinguish

different levels or competence.

Synthesis

As a whole, the foregoing literature and studies were supportive of the

variables used in this study, which include the following: McCulla (2011)

cited the important of mentoring relationship in the succession from one

career stage to the next of every student. Also scholarship as the

competency based self-placed program with clear quantifiable objectives.

Sarvi (2014) the career management process begins with setting goals and

objectives.

Literature and studies that give details in conceptual and research

literature have similarities and differences in our study. These sources help

us to widen our knowledge about the impact of scholarship program to the

educational need of students in terms of financial. The former studies to the

present study were discussed as follows to show that the latter is not

duplication.

The doors to higher education are not equally open to all. Students

from poorer families and those with less educated parents are less likely to

finish high school and enter college (Kauffman, Alt and Chapman 2004).They

differed, however in the standard of living of students who acquire

23
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

scholarship. The current study concerned to the students who is willing to

apply and having a good grade while the former only concerned to the

students from low socio-economic status.

The scholarship program was designed to: 1) encourage school

redesign that facilitates high academic achievement and increased college

enrolment among all students at the selected high schools, 2) identify and

reduce financial barriers to college for motivated and talented low-income

students, 3) provide mentoring and academic support to WSA scholars

(program participants) once they are enrolled in college, and 4) develop a

diverse cadre of college-educated citizens and leaders in Washington State

(O’Brien 2007).

The previous research done was about the design of the scholarship

program. In this research, the four stages or types on how they construct

their program is to help the students to continue their education without any

burden regarding to the school expenses.

However, this study is somewhat similar to the present study due to

the fact that both researches deal with the academic support and financial

support of the students. Apparently, O’ Brien study differs from the present

study because his study that we were conducted only belongs to the college

students and also as their participants while the present study involved

senior high school students as their respondents. Also, they differed in terms

of research locale.

24
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

Angrist and Lavy (2009) evaluate the effectiveness of financial rewards

on the academic achievement of Israeli students. They find that the program

has led to relevant effects for female but not for male. Differences among

genders emerge in Angrist, Lang and Oreopoulos (2009), who conduct an

experimental evaluation on students enrolled to a large Canadian University.

The results, in fact, show that while male students were not affected by the

program, female ones improved their academic performance.

Angrist, Lavy, Lang, and Oreopoulos study have differences to the

present study when it comes to the participants for the effectiveness of their

program. The result of their study, the male students were not affected by

the financial rewards for their academic achievement while the female

students improved their academic performance and for the present study

some male and female students improved their academic performance.

A study done by Galemba, 2005; Gegato,2007 showed similarities on

the present study because both conferred on allowance.

A study done by Gegato 2007 showed few similarity and differences on

the present study. The similarity is it discussed the possible effects of being a

scholar student and the difference was the present study was not involved

about the personal life of scholar students.

A study done by Sharma 2010 has differences on the present study

because the cash rewards or financial support of the students were based on

the total scores of their exams.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHOD AND PROCEDURE

This chapter presents the research design, subject of the study, the

data gathering instrument, data gathering procedure and the statistical

26
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

treatment data. These methods and procedures are used by the researcher

in conducting research.

Research Design

The study used descriptive research method which is the survey

questionnaire to determine the hypothesis and to know the number of

variables. From the survey questionnaires; action plan was expected output

is to inform the students on how to spent the financial support properly and

the purpose of scholarship program. According to Manuel and Medel

2005, descriptive method describes what is. It involves the

description recording, analysis and interpretation of the present

nature, composition or processes of phenomena. The focus is in

prevailing conditions or how a person group or things behaves or

functions in the present. It often involves some type of comparison

or contrast.

Subject of the Study

The respondents of the study were the 100 selected senior high school

students of St. Augustine School of Nursing Lipa. A purposive sample is a

non-probability sample that is selected based on characteristics of a

population and the objective of the study. Purposive sampling is also known

as judgmental, selective, or subjective sampling. This type of sampling can

be very useful in situations when you need to reach a targeted sample

27
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

quickly, and where sampling for proportionality is not the main concern.

There are seven types of purposive samples, each appropriate to a different

research objective.

Data Gathering Instrument

The instruments used for the study in data gathering were the

validated questionnaires. From the research, questionnaires refer to the list

of a research or survey questions asked to the respondents, and designed to

extract specific information.

Construction of the Questionnaire. The researchers prepared a

questionnaire for students which were the primary gathering instrument. The

questionnaire divided into three parts: the profile of the respondents, the

benefits of students in scholarship program, and the possible effects to

students of having maintaining grades. The first part of the questionnaire

included the age, gender, and grade level. The second part of the

questionnaire pertained to the five benefits of scholarship program to

students which are the tuition, allowance, educational tour, miscellaneous

fee and school needs; it has five questions in every factor, with the total of

25 questions altogether. The third part of questionnaire deals on the 10

questions about the possible effects to students of having maintaining

grades. The researchers gathered information from different literatures which

help them in constructing a question. The first draft of the questionnaire was

presented to the thesis adviser to give suggestions and corrections for the

28
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

revisions. After revision, the final draft was presented to the thesis adviser

for the approval.

Validation of Questionnaire. The researchers seek the expertise to

validate the questionnaire. Suggestions and corrections of experts were

applied to the final draft. After revisions, the final draft was checked by the

thesis adviser and instructor for approval. After the approval of them, the

questionnaire was ready for administration.

Administration of Questionnaire. The researcher will ask for the

permission of the school directress by preparing request letter. After the

approval of the school directress, the validated questionnaires were

personally distributed to the selected senior high school students.

Scoring of the Responses. To acquire the scores and percentage of the

answers from respondents, response was then tailed, scored and tabulated

by employing statistical treatment. The researchers used the likert scale for

the evaluation of the respondents where 4 is the highest and 1 is the lowest.

Each option was given a verbal description. The scales are as follows:

Option Scale Verbal

Description

4 3.26 - 4.00 Strongly Agree

3 2.51 - 3.25 Agree

Data Gathering Procedure. After the approval, the researchers asked for

the permission of the school directress by presenting the letter for the

distribution of the validated questionnaires to the grade 11 and grade 12

ABM students. After the respondents answered the survey questionnaire,

these were reclaimed by the researchers. The scores and percentage who

response were tallied, tabulated and interpreted through the use of statistical

treatment data.

Statistical treatment of Data

The information gathered was tabulated to determine the piece

interpretation of the result. Data were collated, tabulated and analyzed. The

statistical tools used in this study were ranking and weighted mean.

The weighted mean method was used to interpret data from the

respondent’s assessment of the questionnaire items relative to the impact of

scholarship program to the educational needs in terms of financial.

The rank method was used to arrange the number of decreasing or

increasing order of size. The highest occurrence of behavior with greater

number was given the highest rank.

30
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

Frequency. This is the method used to determine the responses of the

respondents in the given variable.

Percentage. The descriptive statistic was used to determine what part of

the implement respondents fall under the certain categories. The formula of

the percentage (%) is frequency (F) over the number of the respondents (N),

then multiply by 100.

Ranking. This method was used to determine the degree/rank of the

participant’s responses from highest to lowest.

Weighted Mean. This was used to specify the range of the factors in

scholarship to the Educational needs of the selected students at the St.

Augustine School of Nursing Lipa Campus in terms of Financial. The formula

of the Weighted mean is the sum (Σ) of the product of frequency and score

(X) over the total number of respondents (N).

The table1 shows that there is 52 or 52 percent of the respondents

were 16 – 17 years old. Therefore, most of the respondents are at the age

range of 16 – 17 years old. The 45 respondents or 45 percent of the total

students of the respondents belong to age 18 – 19 years old. Likewise, 3

respondents or 3 percent of the total students of the respondents belong to

age 20 years old and above. Moreover, the grade 11 and grade 12 ABM

students with the age of 16 – 17 years old in the respondents has a highest

number all over the total respondents. The researchers found that 20 years

old and above students are limited because most of the senior high school

students are in the age range of 16 -17 years old.

1.2. Gender. The table 2 presents the number and percentage of

respondents in terms of gender.

scholarship. Moreover, the composite mean is 3.24 and the verbal

interpretation is strongly agree. According to Frank Elliot 2010, he defines

competent depends on what the competence is about. It is the clearest when

there are no common higher levels of ability. There are many more abilities

where people are more inclined to make distinctions, such as between

“competent” and “highly competent”. We are saying here that in these

50
ST. AUGUSTINE SCHOOL OF NURSING LIPA

matters there is no single common standard or competence, but that we can

distinguish different levels or competence.
