CONTEMPORARY FASHION FROM THE

LAND OF PHARAOHS

When talking about Ancient Egypt, Cleopatra has always remained a singular influence in
her world of style. Her wardrobe is a combination of both Greek and Egyptian elements
that were skillfully combined. Today’s peplum is descended from the ancient Greek peplos
style. A long tube-like garment belted at the waist and cleverly folded to give the illusion
of a flared piece of fabric at the hips. The Queen of Nile, however, mixed these more
modest gowns with the seductive Egyptian fashions, much in the same way that modern
women mix designers and styles.
The Egyptians gave us many contributions from fashion, such as their fabulous Linen. Ancient
Egyptian Linen is very useful for us today especial ly during the hot and dry seasons due to its
thin and light material as well as absorbent fibers that provides coolness and freshness.

Ancient Egyptians wore light clothes made from linen, linen is made from flax, a plant grown by the Nile.
The flax was spun into thread then was woven into cloth. Ancient Egyptian children were not able to wear
clothing until they were six years old .

Egyptians follow a popular style of pleating and draping. The Balenciaga’s 2009 Spring
and summer collection displayed outfits with pleating wrapping the entire body and
covering the arms in the same way as Egyptian clothing.

GARMENTS

All men, from the tomb worker to the pharaoh, wore a kind of kilt or apron that varied in
length over the years. A sleeved, shirt-like garment also became fashionable.
Women wore straight, ankle-length dresses that usually had straps that tied at the neck or
behind the shoulders. Some dresses had short sleeves or women wore short robes tied
over their shoulders. Later fashions show that the linen was folded in many tiny vertical
pleats and fringes were put at the edges.
Wealthy people wore sandals made of leather that had st raps across the instep and
between the first and second toes. Basic garments with minor variations accounted for
fashion, social status and wealth did not change fundamentally throughout Egypt’s
history. Very little sewing was done. The cloth was wrapped r ound the body and held in
place by a belt.

ANCIENT EGYPTIAN JEWELLERY

It has been hundreds of thousands of years since the first simple jewelers pieces were
crafted from seashells, bones, and animal skin. In the years since our ancestors first left
the African continent, Egypt has become a dominant civilization in ancient history. They
were empowered by advances in technology, and access to gemstones and precious metals.
With a deep appreciation for luxury, it wasn’t long before they became the leading force in
manufacturing jewelers and creating long lasting trends.
The rise in Egyptian jewelers was the discovery of gold. This allowed Egyptians to collect
vast quantities of the metal which was the perfect material to create elaborate Egyptians
jewelers designs. Men and women of all social classes adorned these jewelleries. Statues
of God and kings were even decked with lavish jewels.

MAKE-UP

The ancient Egyptians regarded beauty as a sign of holiness. Everything the ancient
Egyptians used had a spiritual aspect to it, including cosmetics, which is why cosmetics
were an integral part of their daily lives.
The two main forms of eye makeup were grepond eye paint and black kohl. The black kohl
eyeliner were used by the ancient Egyptians to darken and highlight their eyes and was
made from a substance called galena; a dark grey ore of lead. Notably, this is showcased
today by both male and female models on the ramp shows. The green eye paint was made
of malachite, a copper carbonate pigment. The Ancient Egyptian eye make -up was
extremely elaborate and created the almond eye look which has become synonymous with
the Ancient Egyptians. We now see the Arabian makeup taking influence of this look. The
eye make-up used concentrated in providing color to their lashes, eye lids and brows.
Their favorite eye make-up colors were black and green. They were made by grounding on
a palette and subsequently mixed with water to form a paste. Ancient Egyptians used a
type of rouge to stain their lips and cheeks. Ochre was used to achieve the red coloring in
make-up by the ancient Egyptians. Red ochre is a pigment made from naturally tinted clay
– hydrated iron oxide. To make the ochre, the clay was first mined from the ground,
washed, dried and sometimes burned to enhance the natural color.
