IO Simple Outline

Global Issue: Corruption as an obstacle to achieving greater equality:

1) I Chose: Maya’s Eulogy describes the absence of peace and justice globally.
2) I Chose: Police dog attacking the black man photo by Bill Hudson → it shows
the consequences of the injustice and unequal discrimination that affects
humanity from the corruption of the KKK.

Thesis Statement:
Corruption -
→ corruption comes in many forms that persecute or counters the opposite idea
→ ideology is superior to others
→ One of these diverse ideologies that may oppose corruption is equality
- For: embarrassment that human civilization has not dealt with these problems
yet and that corruption still looms over us, which prevents this from
happening.
- Against: Corruption can come in many forms too and not all that we think is
corrupt is corrupt. → negative connotation to a belief or ideology that has
been opposed by the mass (majority influence)
- E.g. Soviet Union (Communism → brainwash)

Text 1: Maya’s Angelou’s Eulogy of Coretta Kings (the absence of peace and justice
globally)

Example 1: “Coretta Scott King, you’re absolutely right. I do believe that peace and justice
should belong to every person, everywhere, all the time.” → fundamental right that
everyone should possess.

- “….peace and justice should belong to every person, everywhere, all the time”
- equality has been twisted and corrupted by government to control people
- E.g. police discrimination against black people as they are seen as threats
to society
- America → Despite their ethos of equality and liberty?
- ‘Everyone’, ‘Everywhere’ and ‘All the time’
- If 3 are missing from society it is unequal → expose the corruption that
what they are doing to be so-called ‘equality’.
- Persuasive technique → using the rule of three it makes it more
memorable.

Example 2: “She believed non-violent protest religiously could lift up a nation rife with
racial prejudices and racial bias.” → end non-violent protest bias as the corrupted
government always releases propaganda to frame the non-violent protest (E.g.Fake news)

- ‘Religiously’
- a devoted connotation → God (religion) - permanent and is almost their
way of life.
- Seriousness to what King is says
- it exposes the corrupted biases that government inflict → if King said was
true than no-way that the non-violent protest that she speaks of ≠ what the
corrupted government depicts.
- ‘it will lift a nation of racial prejudices and racial bias’
- the government will not be able to create fake news and frame the
protesters to be bad → cannot show fake news with clear evidence of
non-violent protest.
- bias upon black people that they are violent and untamed people with no
sense of civil respect
- Evidence of Non-violence = get to know that black people are
innocent of violent crimes.

Example 3: “I mean to say I want to see some honesty, some fair play.” → expose the
dishonesty and unfair play that the corrupted government → Exploit black people's
freedom and justice

- ‘Honesty’
- high-positioned authorities who exploit innocent civilians and tainted
the system for their own selfish reasons. (E.g. Slave trade era) →
African-Americans are exploited for doing labor for the American
people = many slave traders lie to African tribesmen to work for them
(i.e. promise for food, propaganda them of better future).
- It started a long time ago and it has still not been dealt with.
- Ironic → White people tell them to leave but slave trade has force them
to come to this country.
- throw them away after they have been exploited and used → using
trash as a personification of black people.
- subjected to unfair play and no honesty has the white people treated
them in the past and till now, despite black people before has given
their trust to them.

Text 2: Bill Hudson photo of a police dog biting on a black man

Bill Hudson Bio:
- He is a white American photojournalist, for the Associated Press (not-for-profit
base news agency)
- His photos during the Civil rights movements, which helped to push public
support towards the goals of the Civil rights movements.
- He was born in Detroit and was part of the US army during the Korean war.

Example 1: The Facial expressions
- bystanders are either monotone or not very disappointed → shows the
carelessness/ shows the corrupted authority power as they can oppress a
mass of people despite outnumbering the police.
- Positive facial expression from man with hat rotating his body to look
- Many stagnated faces surrounding the conflict, as they helplessly watch from
afar → illustrates the power of authority as the police and the government
- Total Control over black people, no retaliation from community
- corruption that the American government has over the police and that
they cover up and leave black civilians to this type of discrimination.

Example 2: Middleton’s Grasp and yanking of Dog
- Ironic: The New York Times depict Middleton action as accident/ innocent →
compare with the evidence of grasping Gadsen (Is it an accident?)
- shows the corruption between the police and publishing companies
(the New York Times)
- publishing companies as their businesses depend on reputation and
government approval or funding.
- Fear factor of government or police or even the white pro-police
civilians repot them = ruin their business
- Therefore, the New York Times being cornered and taking the selfish
route to protect their company and business - instead of what is right
and just to do.

Conclusion:
- our morality and empathy towards each other have become twisted for our
own selfish prioritize. → prevent us from understanding the true values of
being human and our individual rights are for freedom.
- Corruption has been twisted and manipulate our thoughts to downgrade
others for our own desires → prevents diversity and equality as people see
themselves more important than other human beings.
- Reflect our mistakes as a Human race on corruption
- Different perspective: We cannot stop corruption as we humans are not
perfect human beings and darkness and light co-exist to ensure equilibrium in
the universe. (E.g. Pandora Box Greek myth)
- We should prioritize the good and better instead of succumbing to corruption.
